Parenting Tips from your School Social Worker Team
Helping Your Student Avoid Drugs
Setting clear boundaries and consequences for your student around substance use can help decrease the risk of them using drugs. Research shows that students are less likely to use and abuse drugs if there are clear rules and consequences for breaking these rules in their home. Students are four times more likely to get involved with drugs if they are not monitored by their parents or caregivers. Parents or caregivers can support their students in living a drug free lifestyle by having a zero tolerance policy in their home for drugs and alcohol, and following through with established consequences if this agreement is violated. To learn more, check out the Online Drug & Alcohol Series: What’s the High About developed by your School Social Workers. Brought to you by your PBIS School Social Workers.
How Parents Can Support Teen Mental Health
KQED recently released this valuable article on how parents & caregivers can practically support their teens' mental health as we continue to trudge through this pandemic. We encourage parents to read the entirety of this article to better understand these tips provided:

1. Be aware of your own emotional health, since it will impact your student.
2. Focus on asking questions about how they are doing, rather than interrogating them on academics.
3. Recognize your student may not come to you to seek out support in a traditional way, but they are still communicating their needs to you.
4. Listen and show empathy, rather than trying to jump in and fix the problem.
5. Serve as a sturdy adult anchor to help your student build resilience.
6. Keep the big picture in mind and help your student find purpose.
7. Recognize and celebrate what is going well!
