Parenting Tips from your School Social Worker Team
The physiological benefits of connecting with your child(ren)
Touch is an important part of your student feeling connected to you. Touch is the first of their senses to develop and research shows that it helps build interpersonal bonds and improves brain chemistry. Many studies have shown the positive effects that affection provides for children as they are growing up. Hugs specifically, can be a great parent or caregiver tool. When a person is hugged, it stimulates pressure receptors under the skin, and therefore sends a message to the vagus nerve in your brain. This nerve instructs the heart rate and blood pressure to slow down, putting your student in a more relaxed state. Parents or caregivers can support their students by showing appropriate affection. Brought to you by your PBIS School Social Workers.
