The Right Arm Woosh!
A quick reflection on the 2017 newsletter campaign for you first time readers will reveal our concentration on the concept of the PUSH. The true force applied to the shaft of the golf club which travels to the club head and eventually to the ball and ground is PUSHING not pulling. As my mentor Tom Tomasello, one of the early disciples of The Golfing Machine, stated numerous times,
"Once the right arm participation
is clearly understood in the golf swing,
much of the mystery will be revealed."
Follow the next two drills to gain a clearer understanding of right arm participation. Please choose to like us on Facebook to view these (and other) tips in a 90 second video.
Drill #1 Using a shaft with a grip and no club head attached, set up with your right hand on the grip and your left arm off the club and suspended parallel to the ground.
In this picture, the right arm and shaft are swung aggressively passed the left arm creating a loud woosh which indicates speed. The key in this drill is the passive support of the left shoulder.
My intention this year is to bring emphasis to the fact that we do not initiate the downswing with any pulling sensation, especially of the left shoulder. The left shoulder can be a disastrous leader but a wonderful supporter in the golf swing.
Drill #2 Hitting balls right arm only! The Classic Swing DVD has the most awesome demonstration of this drill. (It's available from our Pro Shop this year for only $29.95.) The force applied to the ball in this drill from the right arm is a sensation of pushing down and out on the golf club. You must have every intention of throwing the club head at the ball and feel as though you are going to drive the ball into the earth and out away from you. Again, check out my lead instructor Eddie on Facebook and you will capture the essence of this drill.
Next month, the left arm Push at impact.
