News For You and Your Neighbors

Sunday, January 28, 2024

Thanks to everyone who came to the

PVNA New Year Party in the Park!

It was a great event, with special guests such as District 5 Supervisor Adelita Grijalva (pictured below with neighbors), participants from other Tucson organizations, delicious treats from Dunkin' Donuts and the PVNA Board, and family-friendly activities like the City of Tucson's Ready, Set, Rec! van. Neighbors gave great feedback about changes they would like to see in our neighborhood. Our lovely DJ, Rachel D'Acquisto, provided tunes for mingling and talking with our neighbors. Over 70 neighbors came out to join the fun!

Thank You to our event sponsors:

  • Frank's Restaurant
  • Dunkin’ Donuts on Speedway
  • Skyline Printing

Thank You to our participating organizations:

  • City of Tucson District 5 office
  • City of Tucson Ward 6 office
  • City of Tucson Planning & Services Department
  • Watershed Management Group
  • Tucson Handweavers & Spinners Guild

Thanks to the staff at the Catalina Pool who helped with logistics.

And a big Thank You to all the neighbors and Board members who volunteered time and effort to make this event happen!

Volunteer with PVNA:

Board Updates

As in all volunteer-run organizations, individuals need to balance life events, family, professional life, and personal time.  We are sad to announce two Board resignations: Steve Poe, Communication Chair and Rachel D’Acquisto, Treasurer, as they are stepping away to focus on family and business. Their knowledge, experience, and presence will be greatly missed.  Recruitment for these positions will start immediately so we can fill these two vacancies as soon as possible.

We are also looking for the following new Board positions:

  • Safety Chair
  • Streets, Parks, and Beautification Chair
  • Events & Programs Chair and Co-Chair
  • Co-Representatives for each Quadrant
  • At Large Chair

If you are interested in applying, submit an application at www.paloverdeneighborhood.org/join-the-pvna-board. We will take applications for the first round through February 3 and then begin the interview process. The process will continue until all positions are filled.

Curious about Board service? Join us at the February 15 Board Meeting to learn more, send an email to info@paloverdeneighborhood.org, or call our VP Nancy Stromp at 520-912-0509 for additional information.

Calling all PVNA artists & gardeners!

Art in the Gardens, now in its second year, is a fundraising event benefiting PVNA. The event is a walking tour of participating gardens - at each garden you’ll find artists with their work on display and available for sale.

We are in the midst of recruiting artists and PVNA gardeners and hope you will join the fun! Last year's garden hosts had a great time working with their resident artists and greeting the enthusiastic public. We were thrilled with the response and look forward to even more excitement this year!

Show Off Your Unique & Interesting Gardens! Each garden host will welcome several artists to set up their displays in the garden and open their space to event attendees. Your garden doesn't need to be perfect - it just needs to have a bit of space to display art and your friendly hospitality!

Reply to this email or contact info@paloverdeneighborhood.org if you have questions about signing up!

Ongoing in Palo Verde

TEP Reliability Project

From Steve Kozachik: "The brown lines represent roads TEP is still considering for running their poles/lines. While they’ve eliminated the purely residential streets in most areas, some collector streets are possibilities. TEP will have another public open house to share their thoughts with the public. That’s coming on Thursday, February 8th from 6pm until 8pm. It’ll be held at the Double Tree over by Reid Park – 445 S. Alvernon."

There will be no direct impact on the Palo Verde Neighborhood however neighborhood representatives are working to limit the overall visual impact for Midtown. For more, see https://www.tep.com/midtown-reliability-project/.

Brush & Bulky

Our neighborhood's next Brush & Bulky collection is the week of February 12. This is your opportunity to clean out your yard, garage or storage shed and get rid of that unwanted debris.

Place your items where your neighborhood's trash is collected. Items must be at least 3 feet from all obstacles, including trash and recycling containers and utility meters. Set materials out by 6 a.m. on the Monday of your collection week. Collection will be completed by the end of the week. Do not put materials out more than two weeks ahead of your scheduled collection. Keep materials out of the street.

The Brush & Bulky maximum is 10 cubic yards per household (1 cubic yard = size of a washing machine).

Brush & Bulky will collect:

  • Appliances (Remove freezer/refrigerator doors)
  • Auto tires (Limit 5 - Placed in separate pile)
  • Brush (Up to 5' Long/ 24"diameter)
  • Cacti (Boxed up for safety - 25 lbs. limit)
  • Furniture and carpet
  • Lumber (Up to 5' Long - Placed in a separate pile)

Public Transit Meetings:

Sun Tran COA Feedback Meetings

The City of Tucson and Sun Tran, in partnership with the Pima Association of Governments (PAG), evaluated all aspects of Sun Tran, Sun Link, Sun Express, and Sun Shuttle services throughout Tucson, and the greater Tucson area to determine potential improvements through the Comprehensive Operational Analysis.

Following nearly 11 months of public outreach to gather input on proposed changes to improve transit efficiency, equity and effectiveness, Sun Tran staff will host six (6) public meetings to discuss the Comprehensive Operational Analysis (COA) proposed transit changes. The meetings will begin Monday, January 22 through Monday, January 29.

Sun Tran Route 5 (Pima/West Speedway) has been recommended to be continued by the Comprehensive Operational Analysis done last fall. As a result of your input, the decision to terminate this bus route was reversed and the City even decided to improve the hours of operation! The final decision will be made by the Mayor and City Council after the series of public meetings is completed in January. Please try to attend one of the meetings to advocate for Route 5!
