Flood Control in Palo Verde

Given the severe storms in recent weeks, and ongoing flooding issues throughout the neighborhood, a team of Palo Verde Neighborhood Association Board members are investigating what can be done to reduce the impact.

Our team has met with the Ward 6 Council Office and Pima County Flood Control to gather information and discuss next steps in Palo Verde.

Please stay tuned for findings and recommendations.

Skyline Printing to close this fall

Our southwest quadrant neighbor, Skyline Printing (1333 North Jones Blvd), will be closing this fall as longtime owner Brian transitions to retirement.

Skyline will stop taking orders at the end of September. Effective October 1st all phone calls and emails will be forwarded to West Press (1663 West Grant Road). Plans are in place to finish all orders placed in September. It will take through the end of the year to close out the books and vacate the building.

Fun facts: Skyline's largest press is 27 feet long and weighs over 11 tons! And Brian has been printing full time since 1973!

PVNA is grateful to Skyline for their support, and wishes Brian a long and happy retirement!

THE VOTE IS IN!! The joyful red coyote that will be installed in the water retention basin to be built at Grant and Dodge has been named! The sculpture's name is :

DODGER

In a survey distributed through neighborhood e-newsletters, names were suggested through 102 responses from seven neighborhoods surrounding the Grant and Alvernon area. The wide selection of names were forwarded to the artist, Joe O'Connell. Joe shared them with his team at Creative Machines and they narrowed the long list down to their top five favorites: Mojo Rojo, Grant, Carlos, Dodger, and Roja.

A second survey was then distributed to all seven neighborhoods allowing everyone to vote on their final choice. There were 172 responses this time. “Dodger" won by a narrow margin and Joe and Creative Machines also preferred it. Dodger seems an appropriate name since the statue will be located at Dodge Blvd. Also, Dodger is a reflection of the coyote’s identity in Native American cultures as a trickster. He is the dodger, the ultimate wily and colorful trickster.

We are all looking forward to Dodger's installation on the SE corner of Grant and Dodge as the Grant Road Improvement Project reaches its end sometime in 2026!

With thanks to Meg Johnson, Garden District

Traffic Alert - nearby road construction

ELM STREET – Campbell Avenue to Tucson Boulevard

and

TUCSON BOULEVARD – Sixth Street to Grant Road

Beginning Monday, August 19, 2024, Southern Arizona Paving, under contract with the City of Tucson Department of Transportation and Mobility (DTM), is scheduled to begin two roadway improvement projects on Elm Street and Tucson Boulevard to install ADA compliant ramps.

In late September, crews will begin roadway improvements on Elm Street from Campbell Avenue to Tucson Boulevard. Crews will lower manhole covers and water valve covers, mill (remove) the top layer of asphalt and repave with new asphalt. During the milling and paving on Elm Street, one-way travel will be maintained. Additionally, residential and business access will be maintained throughout the project.

In early November, crews are scheduled to begin the roadway improvements on Tucson Boulevard from Sixth Street to Grant Road. Crews will lower manhole covers and water valve covers, mill (remove) the top layer of asphalt and repave with new asphalt. During the work on Tucson Boulevard, one travel lane in each direction will be maintained as well as access to residential and business driveways.

This project will not include improvements to the Speedway Boulevard and Tucson Boulevard intersection.

Crews will work Monday through Friday from about 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. The project is scheduled to be completed in December 2024.

Electronic message boards will be in place ahead of the project to alert motorists of this upcoming work. The schedule is subject to change due to inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances.

This project is part of the Tucson Mayor and Council approved 5-Year Collector Street Program. In June 2022, the Tucson Mayor and Council voted and approved $15 million per year for 5 years to preserve and improve selected collector streets in the City of Tucson.

Important Information for Commercial, Multifamily or Rental Property Owners

One hindrance to dealing with trespass and homeless issues by the Tucson Police Department and Homeless Task Force is the lack of authority to enter a property if the owner is not available to give permission. A form is available that must be filled out yearly that allows the Police to enter the property without contacting you for homeless issues, squatters, domestic violence calls, unwanted visitors, etc.

Does your business or property have a trespass letter on file that is up to date? They need to be filed by the current owner and refiled every year.

Here is the link to a brochure detailing the program:

https://bomagt.org/downloads/Homeless_Task_Force/tpd_new_trespass_brochure_4_2021.pdf

The fillable form can be found at:

This information is provided by the organization Building Owners and Managers Association of Greater Tucson (BOMA Greater Tucson). The organization's website (bomagt.org) shares many helpful resources for owners and managers.

Did you Know...?

Why we celebrate Labor Day

According to the US Department of Labor (https://www.dol.gov/general/laborday/history), "Labor Day is observed the first Monday in September. Labor Day is an annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers. The holiday is rooted in the late nineteenth century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being.

Many Americans celebrate Labor Day with parades and parties – festivities very similar to those outlined by the first proposal for a holiday, which suggested that the day should be observed with a street parade to exhibit "the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations" of the community, followed by a festival for the recreation and amusement of the workers and their families. This became the pattern for the celebrations of Labor Day.

American labor has raised the nation’s standard of living and contributed to the greatest production the world has ever known and the labor movement has brought us closer to the realization of our traditional ideals of economic and political democracy. It is appropriate, therefore, that the nation pays tribute on Labor Day to the creator of so much of the nation's strength, freedom, and leadership – the American worker".
