WMG Build A Basin Event

Watershed Management Group (WMG) hosted a Build a Basin workshop at 1501 North Winstel on Saturday, August 26 to train neighborhood leaders so they can help others build their own basins. Eight PVNA residents learned how to create a rain basin, plant and tend native vegetation and create shade and capture rainwater. A fine time was had by all!

A second PVNA-local workshop is tentatively planned for September 16. WMG provides tools, resources and supplies like mulch and native plants for each participant. Stay tuned for details!

Labor Day: Did You Know?

American labor has raised the nation’s standard of living and contributed to the greatest production the world has ever seen. We celebrate and pay tribute on Labor Day to the creator of so much of the nation's strength, freedom, and leadership – the American worker.

The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, created by the Central Labor Union. By 1894, 23 more states had adopted the holiday. On June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed a law making the first Monday in September of each year a national holiday.

In 1882, Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a co-founder of the American Federation of Labor, suggested setting aside a day for a "general holiday for the laboring classes" to honor those "who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold."

Before it was a federal holiday, Labor Day was recognized by labor activists and individual states. New York was the first state to introduce a bill, but Oregon was the first to pass a law recognizing Labor Day, on February 21, 1887. In 1887, four more states approved the holiday – Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York.

at The Loft Cinema

with Mingling on the Patio after the Film

Theater Camp is a 2023 American comedy directed by Molly Gordon and Nick Lieberman in both of their respective feature directorial debuts, from a screenplay by Gordon, Lieberman, Ben Platt and Noah Galvin. A feature-length adaptation of the 2020 short film of the same name. Reviews for this film have been very positive with IMDb Rating of 7.5 and Rotten Tomatoes rating of 85%.

“As summer rolls around again, kids are gathering from all over to attend AdirondACTS, a scrappy theater camp in upstate New York that's a haven for budding performers. After its indomitable founder Joan (Amy Sedaris) falls into a coma, her clueless "crypto-bro" son Troy (Jimmy Tatro) is tasked with keeping the thespian paradise running. With financial ruin looming, Troy must join forces with Amos (Ben Platt), Rebecca-Diane (Molly Gordon), and their band of eccentric teachers to come up with a solution before the curtain rises on opening night.” – Sundance.

Benches stolen from Himmel Library

On or about August 25, thieves stole two mosaic commemorative benches installed by Sam Hughes Neighborhood Association (SHNA) in front of Himmel Park Library. See photos of the two stolen benches.

SHNA has secured the remaining three benches and has plans to improve security. SHNA is not interested in the perpetrators, but wants to see these irreplaceable benches back at Himmel Park Library. The benches represent a tremendous amount of work and love from the project originators, the artists, and the many donors who supported the Himmel Park Beautification Project.

If you have any leads, please contact Tucson Police or share tips with the Ward 6 Office: 520-791-4601.
