TEP Midtown Reliability Project Update

The Sept. 21 TEP Open House about the Midtown Reliability Project was well attended with many impacted neighborhoods represented. The TEP representative stated that the Study Area Map, with a clear eastern boundary down Camilla Road, was drawn to ensure that Country Club Road was included in the study area, not because Camilla is being considered as a proposed route. TEP committed to going through neighborhoods areas only as a last resort and that major arterial roads are clearly preferred. The Midtown Reliability Project will provide more reliable electric power backup to PVN but will otherwise not directly benefit the neighborhood.

The main topic of discussion was underground transmissions lines versus overhead lines with many individuals requesting underground lines, including several PVN representatives. TEP stated that the overhead 5 1/2 miles of lines would cost approximately $52 million. An additional $90 million would be required to have those same lines underground. TEP stated it was the intent of the failed Proposition 412 to raise funds for a portion of the underground lines.

Country Club Road is part of PVN and remains an option. TEP will hold another Open House meeting on November 16th and present their proposed routes. They request public comments by email at midtownreliability@TEP.com or in writing to: TEP, P.O. BOX 711, ATTN: Midtown Reliability, Mail Stop CB200, Tucson AZ 85701-0711.

We have scheduled a Zoom meeting on Oct. 9 at 6:00 with Clark Bryner, TEP Program Manager for the Midtown Transmission Lines. He'll spend 10-15 minutes updating people on the project and process. He will be asking for feedback about route opportunities and what's special about the area that he needs to know about for planning purposes.

In addition, TEP is appealing the Tucson City Council decision that due to Kino and Campbell’s designation as a gateway corridor, all utility lines must go underground to the Board of Assessment. That meeting has been rescheduled for Wednesday, October 25 by Zoom to allow more time for public comment. Comments will also be allowed during the meeting. See the Board of Adjustment website for scheduling information. For more information about the proposed TEP upgrades and to submit comments, see this website.

PVNA Meeting with Tucson Dept of Transportation & Mobility - Camino Miramonte Bike Boulevard

On Monday, September 25 at 6 p.m. the PVNA Board has scheduled a Zoom meeting to discuss the planned route for a bicycle boulevard through the Palo Verde Neighborhood.

The City of Tucson Department of Transportation & Mobility is about to kick off a route alternatives analysis for the Camino Miramonte - Palo Verde Bicycle Boulevard. They hired a national expert on bicycle and pedestrian planning and design (https://tooledesign.com/) to conduct the analysis, and are soliciting neighborhood feedback about which routes they should analyze.

Project manager Collin Chesston will provide an overview of the project, update us on the alternatives analysis, and get neighborhood input on the routes that you think the consultant should look at more closely. Click the RSVP link below for additional information and to receive the Zoom link for this meeting.

Bring Halloween Back to PV Neighborhood!

We have noticed that fewer and fewer children are participating in the Halloween ritual of “Trick or Treat” in our neighborhood. We would like to encourage families to stay in Palo Verde Neighborhood (PVN) and enjoy our neighborhood, plus invite families from surrounding neighborhoods to join in on the celebrations.

We are asking residents to consider decorating their homes and have treats available. Some homes may set up games or other Halloween-type events. We will provide a map of PVN homes that plan to provide this fun atmosphere for Halloween. We have named this event HalloVerde!!!

Go All Out: Not only can this be a Halloween for the kids to remember, but participants will also be eligible to win “Best Decorated” HalloVerde House with prizes awarded to the best houses.

If you would like to participate as a Trick-or-Treat House, registration is now open and ends on OCTOBER 10th. Registration will get your home included on the HalloVerde Map. Only your address will be used on the Map. No names or other information will be on the Map.

Additional details to be announced.

Did You Know?...

Goat's heads are ready to be pulled!

All around our neighborhood quietly lurks the dastardly goat's head! Also known as puncture vine or Tribulus terristis, goat's heads hug the ground and produce horrendous stickers that can pierce the soles of your shoes (or your dog's foot!) like a knife through butter. A single plant can cover a square foot of territory or more and churn out hundreds of stickers. The best way to foil their dastardly plan is by pulling each plant out by the roots and throwing it in the trash. Look for feathery leaves, small yellow flowers and of course, small poky stickers. For more information and better photos, see Goathead Warriors.

It's always a good time to pull goat's heads but right now they are setting seed in earnest. Please pull on your gardening gloves, yank goat's heads when you see them and throw them in the nearest trash can. Your neighbors and your toes will thank you!

Remember: You are responsible for tending to unruly or unwanted vegetation on your property, on the adjacent roadways, and for half of the alley behind your property, if applicable.
