PVNA SEASON OF GIVING - update

The Palo Verde neighborhood (PVN) donated 12 bags containing supplies and gift cards for complete Thanksgiving meals to Catalina High School (CHS) for distribution to families in need. CHS also received 14 meals from other sources for a total of 26 meals. Sadly, CHS had 60 families requesting assistance for Thanksgiving. For perspective, US News and World Report states that CHS has a minority enrollment of 84%, and 72% of students are economically disadvantaged. Helping families at CHS is so important.

So PVN, let’s really pitch in for our “Season of Giving” for the December Holidays!!! CHS is requesting $25 gift cards from Target or Walmart so families can shop for gifts for their families or purchase food for whatever holiday dinner they are celebrating.

We are setting a goal of 50 gift cards from PVN for CHS. The PVNA Board will be happy to go to Target or Walmart and purchase the gift cards…and you can have a Federal and State tax charity deduction since PVNA is a 501C3 nonprofit organization.

Simply click one of the buttons below to make your online donation and we will do the rest!!!!

We will be documenting our progress to 50 gift cards in the e-news and on social media.

If you would like to send us a check rather than donating online, we will purchase CHS Holiday Gift Cards. You can mail checks to:

Celebrate with Catalina High School!!

The students, teachers and the administration of CHS should be so proud!!! The Arizona Department of Education (ADE) recently released a new rating of “B” for Catalina High School. They were rated a “D” during the years of COVID and last year they moved up to a “C” ranking.

ADE creates an annual profile for each public school using an A–F scale. The profile considers factors such as student academic growth, proficiency in English language arts, math, and science, readiness for high school and higher education and graduation rates.

If you would like to show support and appreciation for the teachers and administration that achieve this outstanding progress, you can donate to CHS using the buttons below.

Congratulations CHS!!!!

Safe Streets Mini Grant application

The City of Tucson Department of Transportation and Mobility (DTM) is offering a Mini Grant to promote safe streets by addressing the concerns of citizens about speeding, cut-through traffic, and safety while walking, biking or driving. They recommend traffic circles, speed humps, chicanes, curb extensions, median barriers, diverters and street closures as options for traffic calming.

Using your comments on the PVNA Annual Survey, the Board has tallied the frequency of locations mentioned and the written recommendations in your responses to come up with a set of proposed solutions. We will request the following measures in the Mini Grant application:

Pima Street

Two speed humps - one between Howard and Jones and one between Palo Verde and Dodge (in front of CHS). Crosswalks at Camilla/Pima and Howard/Pima (with lighted signage of pedestrian walkway ahead, or flashing lights indicating a crosswalk or a pedestrian island in the median) for the safety of children and bus riders.

Howard & Bellevue (Proposed Bike Blvd Route)

Either close Bellevue at Howard or install a large traffic circle. Closure as a through street would be most cost effective. If placed on the west side of Howard, it could also reduce the traffic on Howard.

Camilla

A speed hump between Speedway and Bellevue to slow down the traffic from Circle K. A traffic circle at Camilla and Waverly (with a permeable base) would reduce traffic speed and also help with flooding concerns.

Seneca

A speed hump between Country Club and Camilla to address continued speeding issues.

Fairmount & Jones

A traffic circle at Fairmount and Jones (with a permeable base) to reduce traffic speed and also help with flooding concerns.

Linden

A traffic circle at Linden and Howard (with a permeable base) would reduce traffic speed and also help with flooding concerns.

Lee

A speed hump between Camilla and Howard to reduce traffic speed.

We will need volunteers to help gather support for this project. We will need local residents to collect signatures for specific work at each location. If you want to volunteer, email us at info@paloverdeneighborhood.org or simply reply to this email.

We will submit the Safe Street Mini Grant application on Friday, December 20 after the final review and PVNA Board approval at the December 19th Board meeting.

If you have questions or want to provide more information for the project, email Jayla, Chair of Streets, Parks and Beautification at pvnaspb@gmail.com before December 12th.

Did You Know?

Have you noticed dog poop in neighborhood parks? Or anywhere? Palo Verde, we have a problem. We love our dogs and caring for them means we need to pick up after them. NO ONE wants to step in a pile of poop!! While many neighbors are already meticulous poop pickers, we want to help ensure it's easy for everyone to pick up the poop.

Our neighborhood parks (Pocket Park, Seneca Park, Richey Basin Park) and many street corners have handy containers installed for plastic bags to make it easier for us to pick up the poop. Use them and help maintain them!

Please consider:

  • Using those handy plastic bags or your own plastic bags to pick up the poop.
  • Contributing extra plastic bags to the receptacles in your areas. Help your neighbors do the right thing!
  • See an opportunity for a new receptacle? Let us know and we can see what's possible.
  • Put the bagged poop in the nearest trash receptacle or take it home to put in your trash.

Love your neighbor and your neighborhood. Thank you for picking up after your pups!

Neighborhood Bulletins

Have news to share with the neighborhood? The Neighborhood Bulletin section is a section we are piloting in the e-news to provide a forum for free items, lost & found, free, non profit, or local events, pets available for foster/adoption, happenings at local school, happenings at local schools, etc. Submissions can be 3-5 sentences and include a photo and your contact information. To submit an item, please email it to info@paloverdeneighborhood.org. Submissions are subject to approval and may be edited for brevity and clarity.

HAPP – House Address Painting Project November Recap

Thanks to the volunteers - Jayla, Nancy, Maribeth, Arlene and Jenny - that completed the November HAPP signups for NW 7, SW 14, SE 7 and none in the NE. Pima Street was performed separately due to safety issues and had 5 homes.

Lessons learned: Paint does not dry as quickly on cold mornings (!), so completion was limited on the actual day of the event. PVNA volunteers continued the work over the following week.

Thank you, ExtraSpace Storage!

ExtraSpace Storage at 2538 North Country Club has kindly donated an additional six months of free storage to PVNA. You might be surprised at how much the Board needs to store - everything from party supplies to signs to banners and office supplies. We appreciate the ability to keep it all in one place at ExtraSpace!
