The City of Tucson Department of Transportation and Mobility (DTM) is offering a Mini Grant to promote safe streets by addressing the concerns of citizens about speeding, cut-through traffic, and safety while walking, biking or driving. They recommend traffic circles, speed humps, chicanes, curb extensions, median barriers, diverters and street closures as options for traffic calming.
Using your comments on the PVNA Annual Survey, the Board has tallied the frequency of locations mentioned and the written recommendations in your responses to come up with a set of proposed solutions. We will request the following measures in the Mini Grant application:
Pima Street
Two speed humps - one between Howard and Jones and one between Palo Verde and Dodge (in front of CHS). Crosswalks at Camilla/Pima and Howard/Pima (with lighted signage of pedestrian walkway ahead, or flashing lights indicating a crosswalk or a pedestrian island in the median) for the safety of children and bus riders.
Howard & Bellevue (Proposed Bike Blvd Route)
Either close Bellevue at Howard or install a large traffic circle. Closure as a through street would be most cost effective. If placed on the west side of Howard, it could also reduce the traffic on Howard.
Camilla
A speed hump between Speedway and Bellevue to slow down the traffic from Circle K. A traffic circle at Camilla and Waverly (with a permeable base) would reduce traffic speed and also help with flooding concerns.
Seneca
A speed hump between Country Club and Camilla to address continued speeding issues.
Fairmount & Jones
A traffic circle at Fairmount and Jones (with a permeable base) to reduce traffic speed and also help with flooding concerns.
Linden
A traffic circle at Linden and Howard (with a permeable base) would reduce traffic speed and also help with flooding concerns.
Lee
A speed hump between Camilla and Howard to reduce traffic speed.
We will need volunteers to help gather support for this project. We will need local residents to collect signatures for specific work at each location. If you want to volunteer, email us at info@paloverdeneighborhood.org or simply reply to this email.
We will submit the Safe Street Mini Grant application on Friday, December 20 after the final review and PVNA Board approval at the December 19th Board meeting.
If you have questions or want to provide more information for the project, email Jayla, Chair of Streets, Parks and Beautification at pvnaspb@gmail.com before December 12th.
