PVNA SEASON OF GIVING - update

US News and World Report states that Catalina High School (CHS) has a minority enrollment of 84%, and 72% of students are economically disadvantaged. Helping families at CHS is so important.

Palo Verde, let’s pitch in for our “Season of Giving” for the December Holidays!!! CHS is requesting $25 gift cards from Target or Walmart so families can shop for gifts for their families or purchase food for whatever holiday dinner they are celebrating.

We are setting a goal of 50 gift cards from Palo Verde for CHS. The PVNA Board will be happy to go to Target or Walmart and purchase the gift cards…and you can have a Federal and State tax charity deduction since PVNA is a 501C3 nonprofit organization. We are close to our goal of 50 gift cards and hope you will help put us over the top!! Gift cards will be delivered to CHS administration on December 12 so please respond before that deadline.

Simply scan the QR codes or click the button below to make your online donation and we will do the rest!!!!

Celebrate with Catalina High School!!

The students, teachers and the administration of CHS should be so proud!!! The Arizona Department of Education (ADE) recently released a new rating of “B” for Catalina High School. They were rated a “D” during the years of COVID and last year they moved up to a “C” ranking.

ADE creates an annual profile for each public school using an A–F scale. The profile considers factors such as student academic growth, proficiency in English language arts, math, and science, readiness for high school and higher education and graduation rates.

If you would like to show support and appreciation for the teachers and administration that achieve this outstanding progress, you can donate to CHS using the buttons below.

Congratulations CHS!!!!

Safe Streets Mini Grant application

The City of Tucson Department of Transportation and Mobility (DTM) is offering a Mini Grant to promote safe streets by addressing the concerns of citizens about speeding, cut-through traffic, and safety while walking, biking or driving. They recommend traffic circles, speed humps, chicanes, curb extensions, median barriers, diverters and street closures as options for traffic calming.

Using your comments on the PVNA Annual Survey, the Board has tallied the frequency of locations mentioned and the written recommendations in your responses to come up with a set of proposed solutions. We will request the following measures in the Mini Grant application:

Pima Street

Two speed humps - one between Howard and Jones and one between Palo Verde and Dodge (in front of CHS). Crosswalks at Camilla/Pima and Howard/Pima (with lighted signage of pedestrian walkway ahead, or flashing lights indicating a crosswalk or a pedestrian island in the median) for the safety of children and bus riders.

Howard & Bellevue (Proposed Bike Blvd Route)

Either close Bellevue at Howard or install a large traffic circle. Closure as a through street would be most cost effective. If placed on the west side of Howard, it could also reduce the traffic on Howard.

Camilla

A speed hump between Speedway and Bellevue to slow down the traffic from Circle K. A traffic circle at Camilla and Waverly (with a permeable base) would reduce traffic speed and also help with flooding concerns.

Seneca

A speed hump between Country Club and Camilla to address continued speeding issues.

Fairmount & Jones

A traffic circle at Fairmount and Jones (with a permeable base) to reduce traffic speed and also help with flooding concerns.

Linden

A traffic circle at Linden and Howard (with a permeable base) would reduce traffic speed and also help with flooding concerns.

Lee

A speed hump between Camilla and Howard to reduce traffic speed.

We will need volunteers to help gather support for this project. Local residents will be needed to collect signatures for specific work at each location. To volunteer, email us at info@paloverdeneighborhood.org.

The Safe Street Mini Grant application will be submitted on Friday, December 20 after the final review and PVNA Board approval at the December 19th Board meeting.

If you have questions or want to provide more information for the project, email Jayla, Chair of Streets, Parks and Beautification at pvnaspb@gmail.com before December 12th.

Thank you to our neighbors Brian and Jenny!

Neighbors Jenny and Brian report that they are taking a trash bag with them on their weekly walks around the neighborhood, and are returning home with full 13 gallon bags of trash each week. Thank you, Brian and Jenny! If we all picked up a small bag of trash on our daily or weekly walks, it would really shine up the Palo Verde neighborhood!

Thank you, Ruth!

Our talented neighbor, Ruth, recently shared a box of her own handmade pottery free to passersby. Thank you, Ruth!

Community Corridor Draft Code Proposal Update

The City of Tucson Planning & Development Services has proposed a Draft Code Proposal to update city codes that will streamline development and potentially limit neighborhood input about new structures. At least 13 City neighborhoods, including Palo Verde, have requested a delay in the process and a meeting with the City to discuss it. Concerns include the possibility of high density development in neighborhoods that are currently low density, increased burden on the City's aging infrastructure, allowable structure heights that will impede mountain views and interfere with rooftop solar arrays, and loss of the unique look and feel of Tucson.

A study session with the Planning Commission is planned on December 18. The agenda and materials for this study session will be published one week in advance, on December 11, on the Planning Commission page.

Please see https://corridors.tucsonaz.gov/events/planning-commission-study-session if you would like to attend this informational study session and for additional details on the Community Corridor Draft Update Plan. A Planning Commission Public hearing for this item is tentatively scheduled after the holidays on January 15, 2025.
