George Hellwig
George Hellwig Memorial Park
Named: April 11, 1987

Once a working farm owned by the Samsky family, the "Independent Hill Community Park" was acquired by the Prince William County Park Authority in 1982. Several community members requested that the Park Authority name the park site after George Hellwig to acknowledge his outstanding community service.

Mr. Hellwig served as President of Coles District Volunteer Fire Department
for three years and was treasurer for one year. He was a Rescue Captain for five years and finally Chairman of the Board of Directors for three years. Mr. Hellwig was known for his efforts at getting an "Emergency Medical Training" program started in Prince William County.

George Hellwig Memorial Park consists of 150 acres in the Coles Magisterial District. The Park Authority's Master Plan for the park intended to create a pleasing mix of athletic fields and family picnic areas. Through the valued input of local citizens an Equestrian Facility was incorporated into the plan.

Although the equestrian facility was never developed, George Hellwig Memorial Park is home to the Administrative offices of the PWC Department of Parks & Recreation, the Dr. Tami Universal Ball Field, a universal access playground, a mini-branch PWC Library and the Coles District Little League baseball complex.
July is National Parks & Recreation Month.  We are celebrating those people who have made significant and positive change in our community, parks and recreation. The work of these community Park Heroes often goes unnoticed. #SuperJuly
