Greetings!
As of this past Monday (April 13), Ontario Premier Doug Ford has announced the province will remain in a "state of emergency' for another month - to May 11 - asking that all non essential businesses stay closed. This means that all marinas are closed - including those in PaB -- and, after another month, the situation will again be evaluated.

Please know that your PaBIA Board is being proactive as it considers its next steps with the full commitment not only to provide our members all the services they normally expect but also to follow the provincial mandates. We will continue to inform you with updates during these ongoing evaluations.

We are all wishing we could be up on our beloved islands NOW...and cannot wait until the Provincial government deems it safe for us to again move about the country (albeit in new ways) and that the US/Canada border is reopened.

If we only had ourselves to consider, that would be one thing. But for any of us to travel from our city homes into Parry Sound and Pointe au Baril means risking, not only our own health, but the health of every Parry Sound and PaB essential worker (and anyone who must assist you on your way to Pointe au Baril) who must take on the risks of contracting the disease. And that, in fact, does increase the opportunity exponentially for the virus to travel and infect more people . Though we may not know a great deal about this virus, we DO know that much!

Here is a video that I thought might speak louder than words about the positive effects of social or physical distancing..... imagine the virus as a ping pong ball....

It will do NO ONE any good if we mistakenly think we can go to our cottage and not affect or offend anyone who permanently lives there. Right now, those who live and work in Parry Sound and PaB Village are very concerned, and rightly so, with the increase in the number of cottagers who would travel to their cottage and what they might unintentionally and unknowingly bring with them.

So please, put yourself second - and know that we will return to our cottages when it is safe for EVERYONE! Believe me, they want us to use their services as much as we want their help!!!! And there IS hope that we will have some of our summer IF we stay home NOW!

The MNR Restricted Fire Zone has been instituted to deal with the need to protect our firemen in the case of need to respond to COVID -19 related illnesses.

Township Operations
Township of The Archipelago is working in conjunction with the West Parry Sound Area Municipalities to coordinate consistent emergency measures throughout the District. We are working collaboratively to actively monitor the situation as it evolves and to ensure business continuity while following direction from the Ministry of Health and the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit.

There are new standards for the foreseeable future at the Nursing Station! Please read !

Final Thoughts from our Councillors
The North is not immune to COVID-19. Facts are important and the data regarding COVID-19 cases as reported by the North Bay/Parry Sound Health Unit identify that all cases to date are full-time residents who travelled out of country and now, two cases of local infection. Much higher numbers are reported by the Muskoka Health Unit. We are fortunate that we do not have any reported cases in our Township, and we strive to ensure that this remains the case. It also means residents of the Village and road access property owners must abide by the same strict rules that we follow in the City.

So, let’s get through April and May and revisit the situation in 2-week intervals as policy and conditions change. We encourage you to contact us through email and our published telephone numbers. We believe a positive way to get through this is to continue to ‘communicate, communicate, communicate’!

The IJC (International Joint Commission) puts out a Great Lakes Connection Newsletter.

"Canada, the United States and the rest of the world are in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. The 50th anniversary of Earth Day is April 22. The IJC feels, especially in times of crisis, that it's important to carry on with our mission. This month, we're looking at how people in the binational Great Lakes region are celebrating Earth Day in a time of "social distancing."

There's also good news on IJC projects to create a fish consumption resource for indigenous anglers, membership changes on our Great Lakes boards and more.

What's Up with Water Levels??

The Great Lakes are home to 20 percent of the world’s surface fresh water. But only about one percent of that water is replenished each year. The other ninety-nine percent is there because the glaciers melted and filled the deep scars on the earth’s surface.
 
Water levels are the result of a variety of processes -- rainfall, evaporation, historic dredging, erosion, ice cover, diversions, managed regulation, power generation and other factors. All interact in a complex and chaotic dance. And climate change is altering that dance – instead of a regal Viennese waltz the Great Lakes are now moshing in the pit at a rock concert.

The coming decades hold a promise: “nothing in their water levels past is a predictor of what will happen in the future.”
