Re-Institutes The Deerhorn Conference

The Township of The Archipelago invited representatives from the Georgian Bay community to participate in the Deerhorn Conference in Parry Sound in early October. This Conference was first developed to gather the Township councilors and representatives from the related associations together to discuss issues and concerns common in our coastal communities

The discussions included:

A Strategic Principles review and
An interactive discussion of zoning By-laws as they pertain to our island and coastal community.

PaBIA was well represented in the full day session with three participants: Ian MacLeod, Dave Sharpe and Erica Allen.

The strategic principles which influence the decisions made by the TOA to ensure the continued health and well being of the Georgian Bay shoreline and its watershed areas include:

Preserve and protect our area by maintaining the current philosophies in terms of land use, development with a focus on the environment and responsible planning.
Work together with the Georgian Bay Biosphere Reserve and Georgian Bay Forever to prevent and remove invasive species (ie Phragmites and Asian Carp.)
Be good neighbours and develop solutions with neighbouring municipalities that are in line with the interests and philosophy of the Archipelago.
Represent and Advocate as our representatives and pursue the issues and causes that reflect the expressed best interests of their constituents.
Provide responsible waste removal, reduction of overall waste and increase diversion.
Provide cost effective and quality community services.
Maintain the municipality’s political independence and the right to plan on its shared mission and vision.

The break out session discussion of these guiding principles concluded that the TOA should:

Educate our ratepayers on why and how we achieve these principles and
Consider issuing a document to new and existing cottagers in our tax bill mailing.

An interactive review of some of the current by-laws for building in the TOA were reviewed and, for the most part, were determined to be in line with the philosophy of the core values of the community.

Surprisingly, however, there is currently a minimum 540 sq. ft. requirement for a main cottage dwelling. It was suggested consideration be given to allowing smaller main cottages.
Additionally, the overall allowable building area is presently determined based on square footage of the property. It was suggested that the shoreline footage be considered in the calculation of the allowable building footprint to reduce the potential for shoreline crowding.

The TOA is committed to hosting the Deerhorn conference annually to ensure we continue follow our strategic principles and make any necessary adjustments to assure the continued wellbeing of the Georgian Bay shoreline and watershed areas.

GBBR's State of the Bay 2019

The Georgian Bay Biosphere Reserve invites you to attend the State of the Bay Conference being held on November 19, 2019 at the Charles W. Stockey Centre in Parry Sound.

This conference presents the latest research and monitoring findings on water quality , lower food web , and fish communities . The objectives of the conference are to inform the public and partners on the current status of research and monitoring in Georgian Bay; and elicit input on research and monitoring priorities moving forward. The conference is open to the public and will include presentations from a number of speakers, partner profiles, and breakout sessions for facilitated discussions centred around several key themes.

Join us to learn about:

How climate change is impacting water levels, water quality, and ecosystems
Actions needed to address climate change impacts and mitigate causes of global warming
How nutrient levels are changing in offshore and nearshore environments
How coastal structure and processes influence nutrient gradients
How the lower food web is responding to changes in lake productivity
Status and trends of nearshore and offshore fish communities

Plus, learn about the exciting work that local organizations and First Nations communities are undertaking to improve our knowledge on these topics!

Ongoing Programmes

GBLT: New Funding for Species at Risk work in Georgian Bay

GBLT is thrilled to announce that the federal government has committed $1.9 million to species at risk protection efforts in the Georgian Bay area.

On September 4 ^th , Minister of the Environment and Climate Change Catherine McKenna visited Toronto to launch the Community-Nominated Priority Places (CNPP) program, a subset of the Species Stream of Canada’s Nature Fund. The program funds collaborative, community-driven projects that will improve outcomes for multiple at-risk species in priority places.

Earlier this year, the Georgian Bay Biosphere Reserve , Georgian Bay Land Trust , Magnetawan First Nation , and Shawanaga First Nation submitted an application to have the Georgian Bay Biosphere Region recognized as a Community Nominated Priority Place. Our application put forward a collaborative, 4-year project that will combine our expertise in research, planning, and mitigation work to address threats to target species throughout the region.

We’re delighted that our application was well-received and Georgian Bay has been chosen as one of 15 CNPPs across the country. Environment and Climate Change Canada will provide $1.9 million over 4 years to our project, which will be shared among our community partners. Each dollar provided by the Canadian government must be matched by recipient organizations through fundraising and in-kind contributions, so we will need your help through matching dollars.

This new project is designed to “ accelerate our collective capacity to address threats to species at risk with better planning and policy tools, science-based management, and strategies to reduce the threats to these species ,” says Greg Mason, General Manager of the Georgian Bay Biosphere Reserve . “Over four years, our project will result in more effective landscape governance for priority species in the Georgian Bay Biosphere region. It will proct ecosystem services, and will help to mitigate the impacts of climate change, while creating jobs in the conservation sector.”

The Georgian Bay Land Trust ’s role in the project will focus on mapping critical habitats and corridors for species movement, increasing our array of Motus bird tracking stations, and working with municipalities to reduce habitat fragmentation.
