Here is the barrel near the Lighthouse from where Pointe au Baril got its name!
Although a replica, it replaces the original wine barrel that was used by fisherman back in the 1800s
to find their way safely into the harbour. After it was emptied, it was placed on the rock with a lit lantern inside -
to light up at night to show those coming into shore from the open waters! Thanks to Tom Scoon for the picture!

|
|
Greetings!
The summer is beginning with our now weekly eBlasts to keep you informed as we are informed!
The Ojibway Club is holding off Entre Amis until August in the hopes that a further Stage 2 re-opening will allow for larger crowds.
PaBIA is constantly re-visiting the protocols and their impact on our events and will rely on the provincial guidelines for the Naturalist Talks, Regattas and Triathlon. Presently, the Board is looking to call an event within 2 weeks of its scheduled time...so stay tuned.

How Do You Calculate the Lot Coverage
On Your Property?
|
|
As a follow-up to the Ratepayer and Regulatory Affairs blog from last week's eBlast, here is more on the continuing description of what you can do on your property.
Calculation of lot coverage is straightforward, and the TOA uses this formula to find the sq. ft. or m2 allowable coverage (listed in 6.1.3 of the CZBL).
Please note that PaBIA is proposing to use the shoreline as an additional guideline for those narrow but deep properties on the shore that could max out the coverage due to the lot size without taking into consideration the shoreline length.
Maximum Lot Coverage (1 m2 = 10.8 sq. ft., 1 acre = 4046 m2 or 43,560 sq. ft.)
-
Lots with an area of 1,800 m² or less: maximum total floor area is 7.5% of lot area; (Note: the minimum size of a cottage with a kitchen is 540 sq. ft. which means you cannot build on a property less than 670 m2).
- Lots with an area greater than 1,801 m² up to 16,187 m²: 140 m² + 3% of lot area.
- Lots with an area greater than 16,188 m² up to 32,374 m²: 625 m² + 1% of lot area that is over 16,187 m².
- Lots with an area of greater than 32,375 m² up to 34,400: 787 m² + ½% of the lot area over 32,374 m²

Literally, on the Bay
Edited by Janet Irving, Education Committee. There is nothing – absolutely nothing - like reading a book on a summer’s day on Georgian Bay! This summer we suggest some books that are literally set on the Bay – or feel so much so that we just had to include them.
|
|
Susan Swan’s great strength as a writer shows itself in her novel The Western Light as she describes the landscape of Georgian Bay. We see the author’s connection, and love, of Georgian Bay through the eyes of her character, Mary, a “child of the water,” in a dramatic story based on the author’s family history.
|
|
Shaped by the West Wind
by Claire Elizabeth Campbell
is a very thorough, academic, book about the nature and history of Georgian Bay. Exploring themes of culture, resource development, recreational use and settlement, environmental concerns, and the varying ways in which people approach or interact with Georgian Bay.
|
|
Me You and the Red Canoe
by Jean E Pendziwol
is a very lovely and lyrical story of a perfect summer day. Two siblings push a red canoe into the water, spotting a moose in the shallows, a beaver swimming toward its home, and an eagle returning to its nest. Even the fishing is good!

How does it work?
It’s entirely up to your family. GBF’s F4C program can take as much time as you and your family have to devote to it. Your family can choose from 16 tasks in 3 different categories, or you can simply focus on one or two.
The categories include:
- Decreasing Greenhouse Gas Emissions
- Reducing Waste and Litter in the Environment, and
-
Preserving wetlands by tackling and getting educated about invasive species.
Please join families making a difference in reducing our collective impacts on the future of the environment.

Consider Taking this Survey about Your Bays, Your Views!~
|
|
On behalf of the GBA, PaBIA is happy to pass along to our members this opportunity to have your opinions and voices heard in the 2021 “Your Bays, Your Views” survey with Safe Quiet Lakes.
The survey looks at what people value from their cottage experience, how they use the water, and what their boating activity concerns are. This helps us to understand the priorities of our members as well as providing information for GBA advocacy and action. Past survey data has been shared with Transport Canada, municipalities, the OPP, and boating organizations.
Click this link to go to the survey. Your opinion matters
Please take 10-15 minutes of your valuable time to respond. This survey closes Monday, July 12th.
Your responses are confidential. We look forward to sharing the results with you in the fall.
Thank you so much!

Photography After Dark with Ariel Estulin -
Tomorrow, June 17, 2021
|
|
With the rapid advance of digital camera technology, today’s cameras are capable of producing images that were not possible even just a few years ago. This talk is designed to show you how to get started with taking photos of the night sky in Georgian Bay.
Topics covered:
- gear requirements
- planning your shoot
- camera settings
- calculating exposure, finding focus, and getting sharp images
- shooting star trails
About Ariel:
An award-winning photographer, and primarily interested in landscapes, he travels the world seeking out beauty in those wild and remote places on earth that still remain untouched by civilization and where nature commands ultimate attention.
Self-taught as a photographer, Ariel spent time with Freeman Patterson, Canada’s renowned photographer, to learn the art of making great photographs. His training as a graphic designer continually shapes what he sees through the lens in order that elements such as light, shape, and colour all work in harmony. His never-ending search for off-beat adventures has led him to explore the Himalayas of Nepal and Ladakh, along with South America’s Patagonia. He feels right at home paddling his canoe or hiking in his backyard, the country of Canada.
As a photo educator, his goal is for students to come away with not just better photographs, but a better understanding of photography, better compositions, and most importantly, a skill set they now have and can use on future adventures.

Sailing 2021
Because racing is not allowed in Stage 1 of reopening, the Sailing Committee has canceled the PaBIA Sailing Tune-Up Race that was scheduled for late June. It hopes that when Stage 2 occurs, hopefully in early July, racing can resume for 2021!!!
However, there is a recreational sail scheduled that will start in Ojibway Bay and sail to the wreck. As far as any rendezvous are concerned, the Committee will wait until the Provincial guidelines allow them!
For more information or if you would like to be added to the Sailing eBlasts, please contact Margie Wheler, PaBIA's Sailing Commodore.

Rescheduling of Entre Amis Events to August
Due to restrictions in Step 1 of the Province’s reopening protocols for large gatherings, we sadly advise our traditional Entre Amis and "Senior" Entre Amis events scheduled on July 2nd & 3rd respectively are canceled. If Step 2 allows large gatherings with physical distancing protocols these events might be rescheduled.
The Club Social Committee has tentatively moved these events to Friday, August 12th & Saturday, August 13th. If we are able to proceed at that time, there will be no charge to attend and beer and wine will be available for purchase as always.
Note: Announcements published in the 2021 PaBIA Yearbook about the Summerlicious Beer Fest Tasting Evening and the Feast on the Trails Returns included incorrect pricing. Watch for updates in future eBlasts.
The good news is that Feast on the Trails on Saturday, July 17th can proceed under the phase 1 rules limiting groups to pods of 10 for outdoor gatherings.
The Club is planning for our other traditional events to go forward, making adjustments and designing the events to comply as each set of new rules come out to ensure the fun and safe physical gatherings at the Club this summer.
