PaBIA's Vision: To Preserve This Unique Natural Habitat for Generations to Come
|
|
Thanks to Meg Hilmer for this beautiful sunset as a way of closing down the season!
|
|
Well, last week was very rainy, but this week looks better, with some sun and decent temperatures! Hope you can take advantage!!
We know many of you were able to join us for the AGM, but for those who were unable to and would like to see what was covered, the slide presentation can be found below in this eBlast for you to access at your convenience.
We were very fortunate to have as presenters some of our PaBIA Board members, our Councillors, and the GBA who are all working on our behalf as advocates on the many issues confronting much, if not all, of Georgian Bay, and therefore affecting Pointe au Baril! Without their forward-looking outlook to protect and preserve our natural habitat, Pointe au Baril wouldn't be as pristine and safe! Many thanks!
And for those of you who have taken pictures in PaB during the summer months, please consider sharing them with us so we can document 2021 in style for the 2022 Yearbook! Please send photos to Hilde.
Looking ahead over the winter, PaBIA will work to keep you informed and will bring you occasional eBlasts as the information dictates. Let's hope that everyone can be back at the Bay next summer and a return to some kind of normalcy!

PaBIA Honorary Lifetime Membership Award to Tom Scoon
by Erica Allen, President of PaBIA on behalf of and with the unanimous vote of the membership
Every so often, someone in our community really stands above the rest in terms of their individual contribution towards the betterment of Georgian Bay.
To date in the 113-year history of the Pointe Au Baril Islanders' Association, there have only been 15 Honorary Lifetime memberships awarded.
It is important that the membership supports this honorarium as noted in our by-laws.
I am thrilled to have the opportunity to be proposing a lifetime Honorary PaBIA membership to a very dedicated individual whom we all know and love and have witnessed, firsthand, his commitment to Georgian Bay for many, many years - TOM SCOON.
|
|
Tom has generously donated an indescribable amount of time, expertise, and energy over 35+ years on behalf of the Georgian Bay area.
His many years of service include:
GBLT Board
- Chair of Stewardship Committee
- Chair of Land Protection Committee
- Vice President
- President
- (He continues today to be an advisor and member of the Land Protection committee)
PaBIA Board
- Chair of the Ratepayers and Regulatory Affairs
- Chair of the Official Plan and Comprehensive Zoning By-Law Committee
- Vice President
- President for 3 years (ongoing mentor to me…)

Leisure Bay Derelict Dock 'ATTACK'
|
|
Thanks and congratulations go to Kara Kiryllowicz & Lucien Peron and Valerie Pethick & Earl Manners for all of their efforts in identifying and taking abandoned docks to the wharf. They were determined to tow a 35 foot abandoned dock to the wharf despite difficulties pulling it from the weeds and trees and shoals and having to then deal with high winds and waves. Their tinny, Yahoo, was a brute!
Val, Earl and Lucien braved the waters to help dislodge the dock and steer it away from other docks. They triumphed, but not without hard work!
A smaller dock that included floating foam and wooden debris was also retrieved and towed to the wharf.
Our shorelines are cleaner today.

Sustainable Development Goal #15 Life on Land
Protecting the environment and species at risk is an important part of what we do at the Georgian Bay Biosphere (GBB). With more local development, expanding infrastructure, climate change, and the spread of invasive species, our biodiversity is at risk. Since 2004, we have worked with dozens of partners to collaboratively apply knowledge for better sustainable conservation decision-making. There are many ways we advance the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) #15, Life on Land.
The initiative Maamwi Anjiakiziwi, administered by GBB with leadership among municipal, provincial, federal, and Indigenous jurisdictions, is critical to more effective conservation. It combines expertise among these groups to address not only over 50 species at risk but entire ecosystems. The project has several components related to wildlife research and land use planning. Indigenous learning experiences are integrated into these programs, as well as language and knowledge sharing. As part of Maamwi Anjiakiziwi, GBB has rescued over 5,000 at-risk turtle eggs, and released the hatchlings back into their wetlands. Donations will help this program continue into the future.

Remembrance Day 2021
As Remembrance Day approaches, The Township of The Archipelago would like to honour our community’s active service men and women, veterans and fallen heroes. The Township is pleased to announce the Remembrance Day Banner Program. As part of the program, twenty-two banners will be purchased to line South Shore Road in the Pointe au Baril area.
In an effort to make this program extra meaningful to our community, we are asking Archipelago residents to submit photos of service members, veterans, and fallen heroes with a connection to the Township. For a donation of $100, the photo will be printed on a banner and hung every October and November. In order to be considered, photo entries need to be high resolution and vertical images.
Donations for Township poppy banners will also be accepted, should residents be interested in contributing to the program.
Donations and photo submissions will be accepted until 4:00 p.m. on Friday, September 27th. Photos and questions can be sent to Greg Mariotti, Manager of Operational Services.
