 Merry Christmas

 Happy New Year

*****

Last month, I attended a technical conference in Los Angeles. I grabbed my light jacket I purchased at a USMS Championship Meet years ago. The jacket had the meet's logo which had an embroidered "US Masters Swimming."

In talking with other Mac System Administrators about the sessions, three different admins, asked me about Masters swimming - all had swum as age groupers. None of them really know much about Masters.  I told each about Masters swimming, the benefits of swimming and that most Masters swimmers do not compete. I was able to point each to where more information could be found and followed up with an email.

Each of us is an ambassador of Masters swimming and should be prepared to speak about our great sport. For more information, we can point people to either Pacificmasters.org or usms.org.

Thoughts and Prayers
Karen Hurley, 1970-2013
Temescal Coach

Karin Hurley was the much loved head coach for Temescal Masters for 13 years and died Friday 12/13/13 after a year-long fight with cancer. Karin was an Olympic Trials swimmer in 1988 at the Austin, Texas long-course finals after winning many other prior events as a junior.  Later, in her 20's, while a coach at Temescal Masters, she entered several Alcatraz swims with the team and won her age group in 1999's Shark Fest and in 2000 in the South End Rowing Club Escape although she had not regularly practice for either swim.

Karin leaves behind her husband Gerard Hurley and their kidRhys (12), Aine (9) and Ronan (6). The team and larger community have established a donation site at http://www.gofundme.com/5ranbo to help assist with the funeral expenses and for ongoing support of the children with daycare and other needs

List of 2014 Registered Clubs

A list of 2014 registered clubs is on the website. Thank you to all the club representatives who completed the information. It would be very helpful if the club rep and members of a club checked out the information and if there are any corrections, please forward them to our registrar.

New Registration Year

It is time to register for Pacific Masters 2014, the registration year is from 1 November 2013 to 31 December 2014. Everyone's 2013 registration expires on 31 December 2013.

This year, you can ask for your own permanent swimmer ID. The ID must be five characters long and cannot have certain alpha characters. There is a one-time $50.00 charge, but the money goes to a good cause and you can create an ID that is much easier to remember.

If you register early, there may be some USMS sponsor discounts available to you. Thank you to the over 2,000 swimmers who have already registered and the 121 clubs who have registered.

John Crane
Swimmer and Scientist

If you talk with John Crane, a swimmer

John Crane
John Crane

with Tri-Valley Masters, about his work, you might think you're talking to one of the characters from "The Big Bang Theory," a television comedy that features geeky astrophysicists and engineers.  (John is not geeky).  If you shadow him for a few hours, you're sure you've been transported to a movie set for a Star Wars film. (John is not a movie director.)

Who is John?  He's is a laser physicist and works at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory's National Ignition Facility (NIF) in Livermore, Ca.  NIF is home to the world's largest and most energetic laser system and actually was a film set for "Star Trek:  Into Darkness."
