Greetings!

Happy Thanksgiving
Happy Chanukah

On behalf of our Chairman Peter Guadagni, registrar Nancy Ridout, the Executive Committee and PacMasters Committee, I wish you a

 Happy Thanksgiving

 Happy Chanukah

In this time of remembrance, I am thankful for all the coaches who work so hard so that we can practice and work out. Without them, we would not improve our swimming technique.

Our meet director volunteers - One never realizes how much work goes into a meet until you run a meet.

Our meet officials, whether the weather is hot, cold, windy or rainy, we have a great cadre of officials who work the decks of our meets.

Peter Guadagni - he has taken over as chair and has been doing a great job of guiding PacMasters.

Nancy Ridout - thank you for the years of serving Masters Swimmers as our registrar and Top Ten Chair. I know how much time and effort you have given to Masters Swimming.

Our Pacific Masters Committee - a fine group of people who volunteer their time so that PacMasters is well organized; so that things get done in a timely manner.

My lane buddies - I know there are swimmers who can get a workout from a coach and then work 100% on making all the times. I can't. I will try to out swim the people in the less fast lane ( and know when I am not) and try to keep up with the swimmers in the faster lane; and with the swimmers in my lane, when the coach posted an aggressive set last week and only two of us in the lane, when I felt like bagging it, I couldn't stop for a 50 as Amy the leader of the set was also doing the set - so I had to do it also.

And to Jim Clemmons, who recently started reviewing the Update before it is sent out. He tries to finds the misplace modifiers, dangling participles, subject verb mismatch and all the other ways that I have found to mess up written English.

In the latest of issue of Swimmer, the USMS National magazine, Coach Valeriy Boreyko of USF was a featured coach; Cokie Lepinski of Swymnut Masters wrote an article about the Breaststroke Start which Swimmer Erica Sutherland was photographed; and Glenda Carroll's novel "Dead in the Water" was reviewed by Kate Coleman.

Next month is the Kick for Time Postal Swim organized by MEMO. Kate Eby has written an article about Marcia Benjamin and her club. (see below)

Again Happy Thanksgiving!

Pacific Masters
List of 2014 Registered Clubs

A list of 2014 registered clubs is on the website. Thank you to all the club representatives who completed the information. It would be very helpful if the club rep and members of a club checked out the information and if there are any corrections, please forward them to our registrar.

New Registration Year

It is time to register for Pacific Masters 2014, the registration year is from 1 November 2013 to 31 December 2014. Everyone's 2013 registration expires on 31 December 2013.

This year, you can ask for your own permanent swimmer ID. The ID must be five characters long and cannot have certain alpha characters. There is a one-time $50.00 charge, but the money goes to a good cause and you can create an ID that is much easier to remember.

If you register early, there may be some USMS sponsor discounts available to you. Thank you to the over 2,000 swimmers who have already registered and the 121 clubs who have registered.

Marcia's Enthusiastic Masters of Oakland
Did you get that MEMO?

Enthusiastic is one word to describe Marcia Benjamin. You could also describe her as gregarious, helpful, and happy; but none of those adjectives form a team acronym quite as well.

"My Cat's Name is Flutter"

Marcia Benjamin calls herself a swimming nerd. From her email address to her license plate, from her clothes to the name of her cat, swimming is her passion. Benjamin is a USMS All-American and former Pacific Masters Swimmer of the Year. After 25 years, she still holds the 500 Free record at Laney College in Oakland, where she now coaches.  [ More ]

Davis Aquatic Masters
Brute Squad
Four Days Left

The 2013 Davis Aquatic Masters Brute Squad Postal Challenge is taking place during the month of November. It is the 200 Fly, followed by the 400 IM followed by the 1650 Free. The cumulative time determines the winner.

Reno Winners Meet
Cancelled
The Sierra Nevada Masters regretfully cancelled their December Winners Meet.
MEMO Kick For Time
MEMO is having a 400 Kick for Time Postal event. It will start on December 1 and conclude 11:59PM New Year's Eve. MEMO wants to encourage everyone to have as much fun as MEMO does with their kick sets.
Jon Steiner
Memorial Mile
Tamalpias Masters is sponsoring the Jon Steiner Memorial Mile. This event is unusual as there is no set entry fee - You pay what you want with 50% of the proceeds donated to the Bonnie J. Addaria Lung Cancer Foundation.

The event is named after the events founder Jon Steiner, who died of lung cancer six years ago. Swimmers can swim the event in a yards, 50 meter pool or 25 meter pool.

Swimmers can swim the event anytime between 1 January and 28 February with entries postmarked by 12 March 2014.
Santa Rosa Flower Power Meet
The first pool meet of 2014 is the Santa Rosa Flower Power Meet. The second year meet is being held at Santa Rosa Junior College and features the Flower Power 50 Free Challenge - an event that tries to find the fastest 50 Free Swimmer (with a slight handicap for the swimmer's age group). The meet date is Saturday 11 January 2014 with pre-entry closing at 11:59 pm on Thursday 9 January.
The Olympic Club 1500
The Olympic Club 1500 is the first of two distance only meets on the schedule. On Saturday 25 January 2014 the 1500 will be held in the very fast Olympic Club pool where many world records have been set. This is the first meters meet of the season and is only a little over three weeks after everyone ages up on 1 Jan.
