President's Message

Hello Pace Setters!

It’s time to think about the Fall semester already and future events for Pace Setters members.

Our fall luncheon is Thursday, October 26, at the Restaurant at Kellogg Ranch. Save the date and enjoy an afternoon with friends and colleagues!

We hope to offer another Bunco game day and a local tour in the fall. We are also considering a repeat of the Rose Float Deco Day in Pasadena. So many of you enjoyed it last December. Plans are being made! Watch for announcements with details.

We were able to once again award three $2000 scholarships at our spring luncheon thanks to your generous donations and continued support of our students. It was a pleasure meeting them at the luncheon. They are inspiring!

Thanks to John and Lyn Pohlmann’s planning, we had a tour of the California Botanic Gardens in the spring. What a fascinating behind-the-scenes tour! A special thanks to our Pace Setters member, Dr. Peggy Perry, for being our guide for the tour! A fun lunch followed.

Remember to take the opportunity to visit with other Pace Setters members at one of our virtual chats. You will enjoy catching up with colleagues near and far from Cal Poly Pomona. Stay connected at our virtual zoom chats on the third Thursday of each month at 11:00.

Spring Luncheon at the Restaurant at Kellogg Ranch

April 20, 2023

Our April meeting included a lot of first-time participants! It was great to see so many new faces.

Doug Nelson from Advancement was recognized for his many years of service to Pace Setters as he retires to Henderson, Nevada. Doug then provided a campus update highlighting Giving Day (April 19, 20); Dean’s searches (six new by fall); commencement (May 22-24, 6500 graduates, 12 ceremonies), and enrollment (all CSU and community college enrollments are down). He thanked Pace Setters for supporting the campus, participating in activities, and volunteering.

Scholarship recipients: Emma Duran, Neil Breakow, and Kristin Chieh were recognized. Emma and Neil were in attendance. They each will receive $2000 in the fall. Please see the article below, which details their backgrounds and accomplishments.

Our guest speaker was Bryant Fairley, Director of The Center for Community Engagement. He discussed how the center connects students with opportunities to Learn By Doing Good. They combine academics with practical experience and now community involvement. His talk was enlightening and encouraging.

It was a fun time for members to connect. Our next luncheon is scheduled for Thursday, October 26, 2023

Pace Setters 2023 Scholarship Award Winners

Thanks to your generosity, we were able to grant three $2000 Pace Setters scholarships again this year. Many thanks to our generous donors. Our three recipients this year were:

Emma Duran is a member of the Kellogg Honors College and is enrolled in the Animal Science program in the College of Agriculture at CPP. She has been volunteering at the San Bernardino Humane Society since she was 17 and is currently a member of the Pre-Vet Club. She hopes to attend University of Edinburgh in Scotland because of the many species of animals she would be able to work with and learn about while there. She hopes to work in a zoo setting with exotic animals when she completes her education.

Neil Breakow is enrolled in a Biology program with a minor in Microbiology in the College of Science at CPP. He is a recipient of the Boy Scouts of America Eagle Scout award and currently volunteers for Rose Float and Pep Band and was a V.P. of the Boy Scout troop he was in. Leadership is a theme in his life. He plans to follow up the degree in Biology by attending a doctorate program at Cal Tech and is undecided whether he will go into the field of research or start his own company in the field.

Kristin Chieh is enrolled in the Kinesiology program in the College of Science at CPP with an Exercise Science option. She is a recipient of the Girl Scouts of America Gold award and volunteered with Girl Scouts as a troop leader. She volunteers at the Motor Development Clinic at CPP working with children and is a member of Kinesiology Health Promotion and Pre Physical Therapy and Pre Occupational Therapy clubs. She plans to follow her degree from CPP by achieving a doctorate in Physical Therapy.

Emma and Neil were at the luncheon and able to receive recognition in person.

California Botanic Garden Tour

Claremont

May 22, 2023

On May 22, a large Pace Setters group met at the California Botanic Garden for a beautiful behind-the-scenes tour and lunch at Elvira's Mexican Restaurant nearby. California Botanic Garden is formerly known as Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden. Our tour was led by Dr. Peggy Perry, Cal Poly Pomona Professor Emeritus, and Dr. Lucinda McDade, Executive Director of the California Botanic Garden. Peggy is from the College of Agriculture, the former Director of the Faculty Center, and the current Board Chair of the California Botanic Garden. Peggy utilized the garden for her Cal Poly Pomona California native plant courses for over 30 years.

California Botanic Garden is the most extensive botanic garden dedicated to California native plants and is spread across 86 acres in Claremont. They collect and preserve seeds for plants native to California.

Many thanks to Lyn and John Pohlman for organizing the tour and lunch.

Viking Octantis Expedition Ship

Viking Expedition Ships

by Phil Rosenkrantz

My wife, Judy, and I have cruised on many traditional river cruise ships and ocean cruise ships. This past April, we took a cruise on the Viking Octantis Expedition ship from Fort Lauderdale, FL, to Toronto, Canada, via the St. Lawrence River. We did not initially sign up for this cruise because it was an expedition ship, but we were pleasantly surprised with the added benefits and opportunities onboard. Viking has two expedition ships: The Octantis and the Polaris. These ships are equipped for ice breaking and expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic for pleasure cruising and research. They accommodate 398 passengers. For us and our cruise buddies, hanging out with the research scientists onboard and learning what they were doing was an unexpected massive plus for this trip. The scientists collect samples and do research related to ocean water, birds, sea mammals, and weather. They also make presentations to the passengers connected to their research and oceanography and allow passengers to participate in collecting data. The ship has two "Special Operations" boats, 17 zodiac boats, 18 kayaks, and two six-passenger submarines. Consider a Viking or other cruise line’s expedition itinerary if you want something more adventurous in your cruising.
