President's Message

Happy Spring Pace Setters Members!

I hope you are well and enjoying the interesting weather these days!

I have a math problem for you to solve. What is 25 minus 11?

The answer is 14. That’s how long I’ve had the honor of being President of Pace Setters—14 years. This year would be the start of my 15th year. It is time for new leadership to take us in a new and exciting direction.

I have enjoyed being your president, and together, we have accomplished so many things to be proud of over the past fourteen years. Are you ready to see what we all have done?

Pace Setters Accomplishments 2011-2025:

  • Established paper then electronic newsletter – published at least twice per year
  • Three anniversary celebrations – 30, 35, 40
  • Student Scholarships -- $500 - one per year to start, now $2500 - three per year
  • Pace Setters support of current faculty and staff – at least $1000 per year
  • Pace Setters virtual chat – once a month
  • Pace Setters Facebook page
  • Pace Setters website
  • Field trips – at least two per year
  • Solid partnerships with CPP upper management and many divisions on campus

Wow! Look how far we’ve come in supporting each other, our students, faculty and staff, and the university.

Let’s remain connected as we move forward this next year. I will continue on the board as past president and will be involved in supporting our new president and all of you in any way I can.

We would love to have you be a part of the new team! Think about how you can join us from wherever you live. Look at the many opportunities for you that you will see later in the newsletter.

Join the fun in the next steps for Pace Setters and Stay Connected!

Spotlight on Member Jeff Mio: A Passionate Educator, Researcher, and Leader

From an early age, Dr. Jeffery Mio knew he was destined for a career in psychology. Influenced by a childhood fascination with optical illusions and a deep curiosity about human behavior, he pursued his passion despite family expectations to become a medical doctor. He retired 3.5 years ago as a professor in the Department of Psychology & Sociology at Cal Poly Pomona, where he was a respected educator, researcher, and mentor, committed to shaping the next generation of psychologists.

Dr. Mio’s dedication to student success was evident in his hands-on approach to teaching and mentorship. He actively involved students in research, professional conferences, and Psi Chi, the national psychology honor society, where he provided career guidance and encouragement. His co-authored textbook, Multicultural Psychology: Understanding Our Diverse Communities, reflects his commitment to addressing issues of racism, cultural identity, and immigration—topics close to his heart due to his family’s experiences in the Manzanar internment camp during WWII.

His contributions did not go unnoticed. In 2009, he received the prestigious George P. Hart Award for Outstanding Faculty Leadership, honoring his unwavering service to the university and community. A scholar, mentor, and advocate, Dr. Mio inspired his students and colleagues alike with his passion for psychology, leadership, and inclusivity.

On a more personal level, Jeff is a huge Dodgers fan. He also likes to take pictures of nature, such as at Arches National Park and Zion National Park. He recently returned from Central Mexico to see the migration of Monarch butterflies in the mountains of Central Mexico. Some of Jeff's recent pictures are below.

Who is on your Board of Directors?

A lot goes on behind the scenes to make luncheons, tours, publications, and scholarships available. President Coley

President Coley to Retire

In February, Dr. Soraya Coley announced her retirement as President of Cal Poly Pomona, effective June 2025. She served for 11 years and achieved much during her time on campus. Some of those achievements include The CARE center, the Student Services Building and new student housing constructed, the semester system replaced the quarter system, a Bridge to Success program with Mt Sac to ease transfers, and Future Paths instituted to ensure student success after graduation.

Dr. Coley strongly supports Pace Setters and often attends our luncheons to greet Pace Setters members and update us on campus happenings. We thank her for that support and wish her the best.

Tour of Cal Poly Pomona’s Innovation Brew Works

January 23, 2024

On January 23, 2025, fourteen Pace Setters members enjoyed an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of Innovation Brew Works, Cal Poly Pomona’s unique learning brewery and restaurant. Led by Head Brewer, Richard Thompson, the tour offered insights into the brewery’s history, production process, and its role as a hands-on learning laboratory for students. Cal Poly Pomona has the distinction of being the only university that both brews its own beer and serves it on campus.

Innovation Brew Works, established in 2014, is an extension of the university’s Learn by Doing philosophy, providing students with real-world experience in brewing, business management, and hospitality. After the tour, members gathered in the Game Room to enjoy a delicious lunch featuring a selection of assorted pizzas, buffalo wings, cheesy breadsticks, and Caesar salad.

The event provided an engaging opportunity to connect, explore the art of brewing, and support Cal Poly Pomona’s innovative approach to education. Kudos to John and Lyn Pohlmann for organizing this event!

Stepping Back in Time--A Visit to Bisbee, Arizona

by Phil Rosenkrantz

For retirees seeking a trip filled with history, charm, and a touch of adventure, Tombstone and Bisbee, Arizona, offer the perfect getaway. My wife and I recently visited these fascinating towns, and it felt like stepping into a different era.

Tombstone, famously known as “The Town Too Tough to Die,” transports visitors straight to the Old West. This historic town, the site of the legendary 1881 gunfight at the O.K. Corral, is lined with saloons, wooden boardwalks, and reenactments that bring history to life. Walking through its streets, we could almost hear the echoes of Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday.

Just 25 miles away, Bisbee offers a completely different but equally captivating experience. Once a thriving copper mining town, Bisbee has reinvented itself as an artsy, bohemian retreat, attracting retirees and creatives alike. We took an underground mining tour and visited the museum, gaining insight into the town’s rich industrial past. Strolling through its winding streets, we admired beautifully preserved historic homes and buildings, many now housing unique galleries and cafés.

For those who appreciate history, culture, and a bit of nostalgia, Tombstone and Bisbee provide a delightful trip down memory lane.

Cal Poly Pomona Philosophy Professor Dr. Gwendolyn Dolske

Podcast Recommendation: Good is in the Details

by Phil Rosenkrantz

Do you enjoy a good podcast while you exercise, relax, or need a distraction? "Good Is In The Details" is my favorite podcast and is hosted by Cal Poly Pomona Philosophy professor Dr. Gwendolyn Dolske and attorney Rudy Salo.

They believe that being curious and satisfying your curiosity is vital to happiness. Every episode is a discussion with an expert where we "learn what we didn't know we didn't know in the spirit of Socrates." Join them in gaining a bit of wisdom on a variety of subjects, health tips, lessons on self-improvement, and some laughter in between. What makes their award-winning podcast so special is the research they do prior to each episode so they can ask deeper and richer questions of their guests than other podcasters. You can find Good is in the Details on Spotify, Apple Podcast, and YouTube.

Book Review

 Mindset by Carol Dweck

Carol Dweck’s Mindset is a transformative book that challenges how we view intelligence, talent, and personal growth. While many people believe abilities are fixed, Dweck reveals that a growth mindset—the belief that we can develop skills through effort and learning—leads to greater success and fulfillment at any stage of life.

For seniors and retirees, this book is especially valuable. It debunks the myth that aging limits learning and improvement. Whether picking up a new hobby, staying active, or embracing new technologies, a growth mindset keeps the brain engaged and resilient. Dweck’s insights show that challenges are opportunities, not setbacks and that curiosity and perseverance matter more than raw talent.

This book is inspiring for anyone who wants to continue growing, adapting, and finding new purpose in later life. It’s never too late to embrace the power of learning and self-improvement!
