Feel the Impact

Bowl for Pace attendees will support hundreds of children like…

MILES!

Miles is laid back, chatty, and ready with a smile whenever, but do not let his calm demeanor fool you. He can count to one hundred and say the entire alphabet at just four years old.

Numbers and letters aside, Miles’ true passion is music.

“Miles is really cheerful, really happy, but if music isn’t playing he just doesn’t caare,” laughs Helen, Miles’ mother.

Helen and Pacekids teamed up last year to give Miles and his twin brother, Hunter, the specific support they need to learn and grow with autism spectrum disorder. The mission: get Miles up on his own two feet so he can step to rhythm!

“While Miles was on his stomach we would give him the supplies to color, then we would move the supplies just a little bit, and he would crawl over to color more,” said Lindsay, Miles’ preschool teacher.

Miles built up his strength through these learning activities to eventually began crawling and exploring the classroom.

Now, Miles is up on his own two feet and ready to explore and grow in our new Sunridge location!

Look for Pacekids emails to see what Miles and Hunter think of our new school, and how you can continue to support hundreds of children just like them.

Staff Spotlight: Shiv, Pacekids Teacher

Shiv is a passionate advocate for children and has been teaching for over five years. She joined Pacekids Programs in 2021. Fueled by paneer, Shiv loves open mic nights, dancing, and walking her dog, Milo.

When in your life did you know you wanted to work with children?

“I’ve known for as long as I can remember. When I was little, I used to pretend to be a teacher in front of my cousins. I would read to them, teach them, and help them learn. The feeling I had then is still something I carry with me today. It was always about making a difference in their lives, even in small ways.”

Did anything or anyone specifically motivate you to work with children with diverse needs?

“My motivation came when I first volunteered with children with diverse learning needs. They were some of the kindest, most resilient children I had ever met, and it struck me how much they needed a voice, a champion. I wanted to be that person for them, someone who would advocate for their needs, celebrate their uniqueness, and help them thrive.”

What is your favorite thing about working with children?

“There’s something so magical about the little stories they tell and the way their faces light up when they smile. I love being able to sing with them, laugh with them, and experience life through their eyes. It’s a gift to be part of their world and see the joy they bring.”

We just witnessed one of your students, Aria, learn to walk during her time at Pacekids. How does it feel to see a child make a major breakthrough like that?

“It fills me with such pride and emotion. Watching Aria take her first step was a moment I’ll never forget; it brought tears to my eyes. It’s a powerful reminder of why I do this work. I couldn't have done it alone, though. My amazing team put in so much effort, and together, we supported her every step of the way. When she showed us that she was ready to take the next step, it was like watching her conquer the world.”

Have you learned anything about yourself, or life in general, because of your job?

“Working with children has taught me to truly live in the moment and to embrace the smiles, the play, and the pure joy they bring. It’s a constant reminder that every day is a gift. At the end of the day, I want to know that every child has felt seen, safe, and loved. That’s what matters the most to me.”

If everyone in Calgary were listening to you all at once, what is one thing you would like them to know about children with diverse needs?

“I want people to understand that children with diverse needs are incredibly intelligent, strong, and resilient. They are so capable of achieving amazing things when we take the time to meet them where they are and truly understand them. Patience and empathy go a long way, and when we show these children that we believe in them, they can rise and exceed our expectations. They deserve to be seen, heard, and celebrated for who they are.”
