Inaugural USMS Fitness Series

U.S. Masters Swimming has launched the inaugural USMS Fitness Series to help swimmers reach their fitness goals year-round and support a great cause.

This initiative originated from our goals of both promoting improved physical fitness and health in adults through swimming and encouraging more of our members to participate in USMS events.

The Fitness Series is a great way to bring clubs and workout groups together for three inclusive and fun challenges: a 30-minute swim in the winter, a 2K swim in the summer, and a 1-mile swim in the fall.

Each challenge includes a six-week training plan, written by USMS-certified coaches, for three different ability levels. This allows swimmers to train on their own or with their local USMS clubs.

The Winter Fitness Challenge is an official fundraiser for the  USMS Swimming Saves Lives Foundation. Clubs and members have the ability to become fundraisers and support our foundation's efforts to make more adults safer around water. Since 2012, SSLF has granted $430,000 to programs across the country that provide adult learn-to-swim lessons.

Terry Laughlin Passes Away

Terry Laughlin, who created the technique-focused swim training system known as "Total Immersion," passed away Friday, Oct. 20, after complications with prostate cancer. Laughlin was 66 years old.

Laughlin had already become a successful high school and college coach when he founded Total Immersion in 1989, and seven years later, he released a book entitled  Total Immersion: The Revolutionary Way to Swim Better, Faster, and Easier, which has become one of the most popular training books in swimming. Here's a great article which is a tribute to Terry.
