Coach's Mentoring Network
2022 is the year we build our network of mentors for Pacific Masters swim coaches. There will be three coaches in each Mentor Triad. One is a Gold Coach with 20+ years coaching experience, another is a Silver Coach with 10 - 19 years of coaching experience, and a third is a Bronze Coach with 9 years or less experience as a swim coach. The network will cross all geographic boundaries in our LMSC. The launch begins December, and the Mentor Triads will be put together early in the new year. The End of Sport Podcast
Episode 43: The Golden Age of Black Swimming
In this episode, Kevin Dawson talks about how his book, Undercurrents of Power: Aquatic Culture in the African Diaspora completely debunks the historical and contemporary white supremacist myth about Black people’s innate inability to swim. Dawson explains how from about the 1400s-1800s African peoples were some of the biggest swimming, canoeing, diving, and surfing experts worldwide because they taught their young children how to swim and find communal meaning in the water.
At the end of the episode, Dawson details his work engaging with public audiences and swim team by educating them about his work. He also explains his surprise and joy at seeing Black Paralympic swimmer Jamal Hill discuss Undercurrents of Power to viewers in an Instagram TV (IGTV) video for US Masters Swimming, as well as the limitations of Team USA’s current attempts to tackle the history of anti-Black racism in American swimming history.
You can listen to the podcast here, and if you want to read Kevin Dawson's book, click here. Jamal Hill's IGTV video can be viewed here.

5 Reasons Swimmers Make the Best Employees
We all know the qualities that employers seek out in new hires
Another reason why swimmers are some of the best athletes! As swimmers, we are able to take our lessons and work ethic in the pool and apply them to the real world. We're masters of time management, work hard, finish the job, handle criticism and are great team players.
Feel free to put your swimming accomplishments on your resume. It starts a conversation and also makes the interview more interesting. Hiring managers will be amazed at you waking up at 5AM go to swim practice and then continue on your day like a "normal person".

What a Year!
From returning to normalcy to record breaking swims, it's been another year in the books!
This is our last issue of the year and we just want to thank our readers, members of the editors team and everyone who has been supportive of us and sharing your stories. This year, while we still had some COVID-19 restrictions, we were able to get a sense of normalcy.
Outside of swimmers breaking records, we must acknowledge those who not only broke records, but those who finally swam their first meet, either in years or their first time ever, or those who came back to the pool after a rough year. The Pacific Masters Kerry O'Brien SCM Championship in 2021 is probably the first Pacific Masters Championship where there was not so much pressure to win or get best times, but just relief of things going back to normal. One of our editors, Jenn, is still mad about not winning high-point, since winning that has been normal for her.
We've had a few notable coach retirements this year, from Kerry O'Brien (officially) to Stu and Mary Kahn. Coaching isn't easy, and we appreciate the coaches being a mentor who not only helps us with our strokes, but also our life. Speaking of Kerry, he was inducted in the Masters Swimming Hall of Fame! How many people can say they are a Hall of Famer?
It was also an odd year where we had an Olympics, that was postponed due to the pandemic. We've had new stars like Lydia Jacoby and Bobby Finke just dominate and inspire us. We were able to see Caeleb Dressel breaking records, Katie Ledecky being the first woman to win the 1500 Freestyle at the Olympics and Dean Boxall being the perfect representation of our coaches trying to make us swim faster. It was an Olympics to also acknowledge that it was ok to not be ok. All we can do is give it our all and be in the moment.
Let's go back and reflect on 2021 and how far we have come along. We'll see you next year!
Happy Holidays and stay safe!
From your Pacific Masters Editors Team: Bob, Chris, Clare, Dianna, Jenn, Kate, Missy, Linda.
