Santa Cruz Masters Founding Member Tillie Cunningham Remembered

On July 3rd Pacific Masters Swimming lost a longtime friend, Carolyn "Tillie" Cunningham. She had been living with colon cancer for about 4 years.  Other original members of Santa Cruz Masters including Pancho and Susanna Wrangell, Scott Patterson, and Cyndy Hertzer celebrated her 92nd birthday in April by taking her to breakfast. Tillie was her usual talkative self and in good spirits.

Tillie did much of the behind-the-scenes work required to help host the many championship meets UCSC from 1989 through 2007.  She organized the pink and blue entry cards (pre-computer days), answered the many phone calls that happened with every meet, changing events and entry times for whoever requested changes, and she also acted as Head Timer for many of these meets, "twisting" peoples' arms to pick up a stop watch and help their fellow swimmers get timed.  People could not resist her entreaties because she did it in such an energetic, kind and gracious manner.

George, her husband, was Meet Director, and together they were a great team to bring these championship meets to Santa Cruz and to enlist the help of many CRUZERS to host the meets and provide cordial, enthusiastic encouragement to the many hundreds of participants coming from all over Northern California and around the country.  Both George and Tillie also participated in the monthly meetings of Pacific Masters Swimming and the annual meetings of United States Masters Swimming, bringing insight and common sense to the many decisions that happened within these organizations.
