COVID-19 Restart Guide

As pools and aquatics facilities reopen across the country, U.S. Masters Swimming wants to help you to bring back your Masters program and swimmers. Although many questions remain and circumstances vary, these ideas can be used to help you return to the water.

First and foremost, consult with and defer to local authorities and facility managers on all health and safety provisions, including guidance and rules related to social distancing and group sizes.  Educate yourself on facility, local, state, and federal guidelines.

You may consider sending a letter to your local health officials providing encouragement and guidelines for the safe opening of the pool for supervised swim practice.  Read more...

How Top Masters Swimmers are Spending Their Time Out of the Water

Spending weeks or months out of the water for anything other than an injury isn't something most diehard Masters swimmers ever anticipate facing. Staying in shape and in-balance during the COVID-19 pandemic has been a struggle for swimmers everywhere, but top competitors Patrick Brundage, Robin Klestinec, and Paul and Laura Smith are finding ways to stay fit and sane despite the recent restrictions.

Discover how Patrick, Robin, Paul and Laura are  keeping their sanity outside the pool.  If you discover that you are staying fit in similar ways to them, that makes YOU a top masters swimmer too.  Way to go!
COACHES CORNER
Books Every Swim Coach Should Read

Kudos to you if you've attacked your reading list by consuming several books over the past two months.  If so, you're doing better than the average 74% of adults who read only one book a year.

The following is a list for swim coaches to feed on.

Make It Stick; The Science of Successful Learning by Peter C. Brown, Henry L Roediger III, Mark A. McDaniel. Ultimately, as coaches we are teachers. This book will improve your understanding of how to make the material you are teaching "stick" so that your athletes can effectively put it into practice.

The Talent Code by Daniel Coyle. This book examines how to become a master coach by maximizing the development of the innate abilities of those under your instruction.

The Hard Hat - 21 Ways to Be a Great Teammate by Jon Gordon.  Great teammates don't just impact you today; they impact you for the rest of your life.

The Energy Bus, an international best seller by Jon Gordon, takes readers on an enlightening and inspiring ride that reveals 10 secrets for approaching life and work with the kind of positive, forward thinking that leads to true accomplishment at work and at home.

Wooden by John Wooden.  Wooden presents timeless wisdom of legendary coaching applicable to all sports.
