An invitation to host a pool or open water event in 2023
Pacific Masters Swimming would like to extend the opportunity for your organization to consider hosting and request dates for pool meet and open water events in the 2023 calendar year. The sooner events can be set and published on the schedule the more time swimmers have to plan for attending your event.
Host bids for the Pacific Masters LCM and SCM championship meets are still being finalized and have the highest priority. When requesting dates, please avoid the following time periods:
- April 14 - 16, 2023: SCY Champs, Morgan Hill CA
- April 27 - 30 2023: USMS Spring Nationals, Irvine CA
- July 7 - 23, 2023: "reserved" for LCM Champs
- August 2 - 6 2023: USMS Summer Nationals, Sarasota FL
- The second weekend in October 2023: SCM Champs have traditionally been held on this weekend
If your club is interested in scheduling a single or multi-day event, please use the appropriate link to submit the brief information we need to follow up and begin organizing the event(s): Pool, Open Water.

Help Pacific Masters Grow
Win a Pacific Masters Towel!
Have you earned your own Pacific Masters logo microfiber towel yet?
If you bring a new member to join your club and Pacific Masters, you may enter the monthly drawing for one of these prestigious towels, complete with the Pacific Masters logo, to show off at our up-coming events. It tells other swimmers that you helped grow Masters Swimming.
Just get a new member or bring back a swimmer who has not been a Pacific Masters swimmer in the past four years (2018-2021) and have them join Pacific Masters. Then enter their name, your name, and the club's name at New Member Towel Drawing.
There will be a drawing for towels on the last day of the month, from April through October. If you bring in a new swimmer anytime from March 1st, 2022, to the end of October 2022, you are eligible for the drawing.
Good luck and thank you for spreading the word about the benefits of swimming while helping to grow Pacific Masters!

2022 USMS Annual Convention
Denver, CO, September 16-18, Wrapped Up!
As COVID restrictions wane, in-person gatherings are happening again. If any of your teammates were recently missing from practice, they may have been among the delegates that were representing our Pacific Masters at the 2022 USMS Annual Meeting and Convention held September 16-18, in Denver, CO. We also had virtual delegates listening to the proceedings, lending their opinions and voting on changes in rules, legislation, and the general business of our organization.
Most of us show up at practice, swim, and compete occasionally, without any knowledge of what it takes to keep Masters Swimming events running smoothly, fairly and safely. The Annual Convention delegates do the necessary work behind the scenes.
Besides the meetings and serious business, conventions are fun! Swimmers, officials, and volunteers from all over the nation gather, mix and mingle, and learn new strategies and techniques to bring back to their local clubs (LMSCs).
Thanks to all of our hard-working volunteers who made the trek to Denver and to our diligent virtual delegates. We will have a comprehensive overview of the results of the deliberations, the legislative and rule decisions, and of course, our Pacific awards winners in our next issue of the Update, to be published October 3.

USMS Annual Convention – Then and Now
A look back at the way USMS used to work
USMS and Pacific Masters have both changed and evolved over the decades, and the Annual Conventions have grown along with the times. Rich Burns, TAM, has been attending these functions for a few years now. He recently came across a description of the first Convention he attended in 1986. Read his essay to see what has changed and what stays eternally the same: swimming! USMS Convention 1986.
