Santa Cruz Open Water Weekend
July 29-30
Fifteen years ago, it was considered "macho" to wear only a swimsuit in the Santa Cruz Roughwater meet, but today the story has changed. First-timers in this event are encouraged to wear a wetsuit. Safety first. The swim finishes at Cowell's Cove, located basically at the top of the Monterey Bay Sanctuary where the Pacific Ocean meets the Monterey Bay. Water temperatures, this year, range from 53 to 62 degrees. Once swimmers have experienced the 1-mile swim, they just might want take on the 2-mile challenge on Sunday. Both events are sponsored by Santa Cruz Masters.
