Pacifica Synod e-Message
Pacifica Synod News & Event Updates
March 13, 2020
In addition to the joint message from Bishop Andy and Bishop Guy Erwin (Southwest California Synod) sent to both synods last evening, we would like to provide you with information relating to events and other news specific to the Pacifica Synod as we continue to faithfully navigate the effects of the coronavirus disease, COVID-19 in our congregations and communities.

Synod Weekly Wednesday Worship Services
In the Pacifica Synod, our weekly Wednesday Eucharist services will be suspended until after Easter. Our current plans are to resume Wednesday worship at 11:30 a.m. on April 15. We will keep you updated as time goes on.

April 7 - Renewal of Vows/Chrism Mass
This joint service for Episcopal and Lutheran rostered ministers that was scheduled to be held at Calvary Lutheran in Solana Beach has been cancelled.

April 20 - Global Women's Tea
The ELCA's Global Women's Tea scheduled for April 20 at Messiah Lutheran in Yorba Linda has been cancelled, with the hope of it being rescheduled in the future. You are encouraged to financially support the ELCA International Women Leaders Scholarship Program by clicking here.

Undoing Racism Workshop & Synod Assembly
As of now, we are NOT cancelling events that will take place after Easter. Our joint Synod Assembly at California Lutheran (May 28-30) and the Undoing Racism Training Workshop at Luther Glen (April 27-29) are still scheduled to take place for now. Registration remains open for both events. You may make hotel/dorm reservations for the Synod Assembly, but check the hotel's cancellation policy. We hope to be able to hold these events as planned.

Synod Office Status
On a smaller scale, we will be reducing staff presence at the Lutheran Center for Mission & Learning in Santa Ana for the next week, at least. We will keep at least one person present during business hours, but if you know who you need to reach, we encourage you to contact staff members directly by email (staff email addresses may be found on our synod staff website page). If you need to reach us by phone, you may do so, but please be patient and leave a message if we are unable to answer. Work will still continue, but in different ways.

Please do not come to our offices unless specifically invited by a staff member. If you have  a meeting scheduled with synod staff, they will send you a way to get in touch. We believe it is safe to say that all synod-sponsored face-to-face gatherings between now and Palm Sunday will be cancelled or made digital.

Where to Find Resources and Updates
Please visit our website page with COVID-19 resources and updates for helpful information from various reputable sources. Check back often, as we will continue to update information as it becomes available.

Caring for One Another
We are called to care for all our neighbors, and to say "no" to selfishly thinking only of ourselves. Congregations and individual members are called to provide for others where we can without putting ourselves at risk of contamination. Congregations are encouraged to put into place a buddy system, where phone communication is maintained, particularly with those in frail health. Members are reminded that they can help provide necessities for those who cannot leave their homes, leaving those items at the door of the person in need. We can financially support organizations that provide care for the poor and economically disadvantaged who often face a choice between protecting their health and paying the rent. We encourage you to work together and look for ways to safely care for your neighbors and the vulnerable in your community.  ELCA Advocacy has provided valuable advocacy information in a blog post on March 12
