Topical Herbal Medicine for Pain

Chinese medicine has a long history of treating bruising, inflammation, pain and trauma in muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and bones. Ancient, complex and well refined herbal ointments are still very popular today. Some of our favorites at the clinic are:

Po Sum On Medicated Oil

Since this is an oil based product it works very well for massage and has a strong but very pleasant peppermint smell. It contains three different Chinese herbs to stop pain, reduce inflammation, and break up bruises.

Spring Wind Herbal Muscle and Joint Rub

As a thicker lotion with over 10 different Chinese herbs providing relief for all types of trauma especially in the beginning stages with swelling and warmth.

Zheng Gu Shui

This very famous formula is alcohol based for quick absorption. It is known to aid in the repair of bone and tissues. It is often used for muscle and joint pain.

Dr. Shir's Liniment

Another famous and potent topical treatment, this spray contains 17 different Chinese herbs which increase blood circulation and warmth. It is good for more chronic types of pain.

Formaldehyde and Your Health
Are you experiencing chronic headaches, a cough or unexplainable skin rash? Tingling of your face or hands? Could be your new furniture.

That strong smell that comes with brand new furniture is largely the result of the formaldehyde used in adhesives and fabric protection products. Formaldehyde can cause strong allergic reactions in the lungs, neurological system, and skin.

Long-term exposure can be toxic. To avoid this chemical, skip on wood furniture made from veneer or pressboard. Use couch slip covers made from cotton without the fabric protection as they are the least toxic.

For more information on the harmful effects of formaldehyde and how to reduce exposure, visit the Environmental Protection Agency's website on indoor air quality.
Massage Therapy and Pain Management
Both chronic and acute pain can negatively affect a person's quality of life and recovery from illness or injury. Research has shown massage therapy to be an effective
therapy for those suffering from low back pain, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, as well as neck pain and frequent headaches, to name a few. Tiffany Field, Ph. D., director of the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine notes, "most people go to Massage Therapists to reduce pain. There's a release of serotonin, which is the body's natural production of anti-pain chemicals. Additionally, an aggravating factor in pain syndromes can be a lack of deep, restorative sleep. Massage is effective at restoring deep sleep. With more deep sleep, you have less pain."

The effectiveness of massage therapy lies in a simple and direct strategy: working from the external, outer cause of the pain to the primary root cause. Care is focused on the entire body system and its relationship to the soft tissue, not only the site of pain. The relationship of how individual muscles work together as well as opposing muscles that may be weakened or shortened are taken in to account. Different massage techniques such as kneading and trigger point therapy are effective in releasing muscle spasm and increasing blood flow to tight muscles. Also, active and passive stretching techniques can be used to release and lengthen muscle tissue.

Another benefit of massage therapy from a patient perspective is how it helps patients become more aware of their bodies and the pain they experience. Massage not only helps to reduce muscle and soft tissue pain, but also improves mood and sleep patterns. Incorporating massage therapy into your health and wellness plan is an effective way to manage many types of acute or chronic pain.
Mineral Sunscreen
One of our favorite sunscreen is from the organic skin care line Leaf People. Their SPF 28 has a light lavender scent and can be used for the face and body without feeling heavy and greasy. The ingredients are safe for the entire family to use making it the perfect sunscreen to enhance the skin's radiance with pure, raw botanicals and boost your skin care routine.
