June 18, 2020
Dear Providence Residents,

Today, I spoke directly to the Latinx Community at the Governor's press conference to communicate health resources and financial support for the most vulnerable communities. In order to be safe from COVID-19, we need a safety net for the people disproportionately impacted so we are committed to the long-term investment in our Latinx community and partners. You can watch the press conference HERE .

While we continue to fight a health pandemic, we must listen and advocate during a social pandemic. I invite you to join me in a Community Conversation on Racial Justice on Monday, June 22 at 7:00 p.m. I will be joined by Providence District friends and neighbors who will share their experiences as African American business owners, homeowners, students and historians. I welcome you to take this opportunity to listen to your neighbors or share your own experiences.

With Gratitude,
Supervisor Dalia Palchik

Juneteenth Holiday
Fairfax County Government to Observe Juneteenth Holiday on June 19

In keeping with Governor Northam's  declaration designating Juneteenth as a state holiday , County Executive Bryan Hill has declared Friday, June 19, 2020, as a county holiday. Fairfax County Government administrative offices will be closed.

Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 that word of the Emancipation Proclamation and the end of the Civil War finally reached enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, effectively marking the end of slavery in the United States.

“Please use this day to reflect on and to take actions that promote the unity we embrace here in Fairfax County,” County Executive Hill said on observing the county holiday. “We are on this  One Fairfax  journey together.”

Northern Virginia Continues to be in Phase Two
Phase Two Guidelines can be found HERE.

Face Coverings Are Still Required in All Public Places

As localities in Virginia begin to gradually ease restrictions in place for COVID-19, VDH urges all Virginians to stay safe. The best way to protect yourself and your family from COVID-19 is to stay home as much as possible. This is especially important for people at higher risk. If you leave your home, practice social distancing  by staying at least 6 feet away from others and wear a  cloth face covering .

COVID-19 Testing
More than 20 sites across the Fairfax Health District are offering COVID-19 testing for both insured and uninsured residents, and the Health Department urges anyone with symptoms or anyone who is a close contact to someone who is sick to be tested.

  • The full list of testing facilities can be found HERE.

CVS Health locations in the Fairfax area are also now offering drive-up testing to those who meet the CDC criteria and state guidelines.
  • Patients are required to pre-register online and have an appointment.
  • The testing is free to anyone 18 or older - with or without insurance.
  • A doctor's referral is not required.
Transportation Updates
I-66 and Nutley Street

  • The loop ramp from southbound Nutley Street to I-66 East will close on or about June 22. Drivers will access I-66 East by turning left at a temporary traffic signal onto a new ramp that merges with the existing ramp from northbound Nutley Street to I-66 East.
  • Two travel lanes will continue through the interchange in both directions.
  • Drivers traveling north on Nutley Street should remain alert for traffic turning left from southbound Nutley Street heading to I-66 East at the new temporary signal-controlled intersection. The traffic signals will operate in a flashing mode prior to the ramp closure and will begin operating in full color when the traffic change takes place.

I-66 and Cedar Lane Bridge :

Overnight lane closures will reduce eastbound I-66 to one travel between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. for planned bridge beam removal. Drivers should expect periodic 20-minute stoppages while bridge beams are removed.
  • Demolition of the southside bridge abutment will finish this week, with work occurring during daytime hours.
  • The remaining bridge pier (adjacent to Metrorail) will occur during overnight hours, but has not yet been scheduled.
  • Excavation has begun for the new northside bridge abutment.
  • Work schedules are subject to change based on weather and construction progress.
View the  construction flyer  for more information about project construction.

Cedar Lane Bridge detours continue to Hilltop, Route 29, Gallows and Cottage roads. The bridge is being demolished and rebuilt to accommodate the widening of I-66 as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project with completion of bridge work expected around Thanksgiving. When completed, the fenced bridge will have a shared-use path for pedestrians and bicyclists on the east side and a sidewalk on the west side.
