Dear Providence Residents,
As June is coming to a close, I want to wish the Providence community a happy Pride Month. With social distancing, I missed going to parades or large celebrations this year, but I fully support the LGBTQ+ community and celebrate with you this month. I showed my support by cosponsoring a
Board Matter
proclaiming June 2020 as Pride Month in Fairfax County.
I was honored to virtually come together with friends and neighbors on Monday by hosting a Community Conversation on Racial Justice. If you missed it, you can watch the conversation
here
. This discussion was just the starting point. I'm looking forward to hearing from more of you on your experiences and ideas to create a safe, equitable community. This week, the Fairfax County Police Department released its
2019 Use of Force Report
.
FCPD is one of the few police departments in the Commonwealth of Virginia to produce a use of force report and I appreciate their transparency.
We are also continuing our important work to "box-in" COVID-19. After meeting the criteria provided by the Health Department,
Northern Virginia will move into Phase Three on July 1
. You can find the updated guidelines below. Please remember that face coverings continue to be required in all public places.
Please find several Providence District updates on the topics below in this edition of our newsletter:
- Phase Three for Northern Virginia
- Board Meeting Updates
- Transportation Updates
- Summer Metro Closures
- Temporary Shelter COVID-19
- Food for Others and Grow a Row FC
I hope this newsletter finds you and your family safe and well.
With Gratitude,
Supervisor Dalia Palchik

Full Inventory of Confederate Names of Public Places
- I am excited to share the news of my Board Matter requesting a full inventory of Confederate names of public places in Fairfax County, including: monuments, street names, Rec Centers, parks, county buildings, and other county properties. This is a first step in reconsidering our history and the process of renaming. Thank you to Supervisor Walter Alcorn for working on this Board Matter with me.
Paid Family Leave for Fairfax County Employees
- The Board approved six weeks of Paid Family Leave for Fairfax County employees. This is an issue that I am passionate about and appreciate the advocacy and partnership of the Service Employees International Union.
- This leave can be used for events such as the birth or adoption of a child or caring for a family member with a serious health condition.
My Brother's Keeper Initiative
- Chairman McKay asked that Fairfax County's Successful Children and Youth Policy Team facilitate a partnership with the My Brother's Keeper Initiative.
- The Initiative was launched by President Obama in 2014 to address persistent opportunity gaps facing boys and young men of color and to ensure all youth can reach their full potential.

Good News:
This Sunday, Metro will reopen 15 rail stations that had been closed as part of the transit agency’s Covid-19 response.
On Monday, June 28, buses will be added to the system’s 14 busiest bus lines to provide more capacity and frequent service as the region reopens. Greensboro and McLean stations are included in this reopening.
Metro will reopen six Fairfax County stations and restore Silver Line service on August 16, weeks earlier than originally planned. The six stations reopening on August 16 are McLean, Tysons Corner, Greensboro, Spring Hill, and Wiehle-Reston East plus one Orange Line station: West Falls Church
A reminder that face coverings are mandatory on Metro trains and buses, including buses in Fairfax County.
