The
2020 Census
is quickly approaching. In March, a postcard will be mailed to residents with directions on how to fill the census out and additional information. It only takes a few minutes, but the impact will be felt for years. For every person who isn’t counted in the 2020 Census, our region will lose $1,200 per year in federal funding. Funding could be lost for federal student loans, highway planning and construction, and Medicare and Medicaid. To plan your participation, visit our
Census Toolkit.

Clean up Providence: Let’s Work Together for a Green Future
|
County Glass Recycling Program
Thank you for bringing your glass recyclables to the
purple bins at the Providence Community Center.
Four million pounds of clean glass have been collected by Fairfax County. The glass is taken to a processing plant and sold to manufactures of varying glass products. Glass-to-glass recycling uses less energy than making bottles from original material, reduces carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, and supports hundreds of jobs.
Doing yard work this weekend? Think twice before using plastic bags for yard waste!
Plastic bags are bad for the environment—they get torn and mixed in with yard waste. That becomes part of the mulch that we use in our gardens, and those microplastics end up in local streams, affecting water quality.
What can you do instead?
• Let the grass clippings fertilize the lawn.
• Use tarps to move leaves, clippings, and other yard waste from the lawn to the truck.
• Use durable cans or
paper yard waste bags
.
Beginning this spring, Fairfax County will be working towards ending the use of plastic bags for yard waste.
