The Road from Ceasefire to Peace

The October 2025 declaration of a ceasefire in Gaza was a welcome step toward ending the genocide that has killed at least 68,000 Gazans and roughly 1,500 Israelis. A ceasefire, however stable, is not peace. The urgent task of ending genocide, occupation, and apartheid is the only path toward peace and justice for Palestinians and Israelis.

How might we do this? The United Church of Christ Movement for Palestinian Solidarity (formerly UCCPIN) shares their Roadmap for UCC Advocacy and Solidarity here.

A Journey from Advent Through Epiphany

The journey is long, and this we know from friends and partners in Gaza and the West Bank. While the fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas feels hopeful, there is still so much work to be done. The temptation to look away is strong as there is so much injustice asking for our attention.

We encourage you to continue to bear witness and take action for the people of Gaza and the West Bank. The United Church of Christ’s Movement for Palestinian Solidarity has created a wonderful set of liturgical resources to be used throughout the upcoming season. Visit here.

Legislation Would Enshrine Antisemitism Definition

Proposed Wisconsin legislative bill AB Bill 446 defines antisemitism in a way that criticism of the Israeli state could be considered anti-semitic and would suppress advocacy for Palestine justice.

Supporters of Palestine justice are working overtime to defeat the bill they feel is aimed at chilling free speech and suppressing those who wish to use moral, legal means to change the behavior of the State of Israel. The bill achieves this suppression by equating criticism of Israel with antisemitism. It claims (falsely) that criticism of the State of Israel is antisemitic. The bill is an assault on our First Amendment right to free speech.

The Palestine Justice Working Group of the Wisconsin Conference urgently seeks your support to help defeat this bill. Please contact your State Assembly and State Senate representatives via phone, e-mail or U.S. Post, asking them to vote against the bill. Write Governor Evers as well, asking him to veto the bill should it arrive at his desk for signature. The title of the bill is Wisconsin Assembly Bill AB446 / Wisconsin Senate Bill SB445. It could reach the legislature for a vote at any time. For more information, click here

UN Approves US Plan Backing International Force in Gaza

The U.N. Security Council on Nov. 17 approved a U.S. plan for Gaza that authorizes an international stabilization force to provide security in the devastated territory and envisions a possible future path to an independent Palestinian state.

Russia, which had circulated a rival resolution, abstained along with China on the 13-0 vote. The U.S. and other countries had hoped Moscow would not use its veto power on the United Nations’ most powerful body to block the resolution’s adoption.

The vote was a crucial next step for the fragile ceasefire and efforts to outline Gaza’s future following two years of war between Israel and Hamas. Arab and other Muslim countries that expressed interest in providing troops for an international force had signaled that Security Council authorization was essential for their participation.

The U.S. resolution endorses President Donald Trump’s 20-point ceasefire plan, which calls for a yet-to-be-established Board of Peace as a transitional authority that Trump would head. It also authorizes the stabilization force and gives it a wide mandate, including overseeing the borders, providing security and demilitarizing the territory. Authorization for the board and force expire at the end of 2027.

Many feel the plan is highly flawed and problematic, but still a hopeful step in deescalating the genocide - and definitely something to pay attention to. Read more here.

Listening from the Heart

Listening from the Heart is a transformative program of the joint Israeli-Palestinian Parents Circle - Family Forum. The program offers communities a chance to engage in meaningful dialogue about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict from a human perspective. Through compelling videos of personal narratives from bereaved Israelis and Palestinians, Listening from the Heart fosters understanding, empathy, and reconciliation.

The Wisconsin Conference Palestine Justice Working Group will be introducing this program to congregations in early 2026. Please be sure to subscribe to our newsletter and watch your email for more information on these free online workshops.

Participating in the program will qualify congregations in completing study of the 2021 UCC General Synod Resolution, “Declaration for a Just Peace Between Palestine and Israel,” and help us reach our required number to trigger a vote of adoption of the resolution at the Wisconsin Conference Annual Meeting in April 2026.

The 2021 Just Peace Resolution will be voted on at the Conference Annual Meeting in April 2026 if enough congregations have reported that they have studied something about the situation in Israel/Palestine. Studying the issue can be as simple as a group in the congregation reading an article and having a discussion, watching one of the videos provided on the Palestine Justice Working Group's webpage, reading one of the recommended books, or simply having a conversation during coffee hour. If your congregation has engaged or will engage in any of these, please fill out the reporting form and send it in to Lisa Hart at the Conference office by March 1.
