Chrism Mass 3/21

CHRISM MASS On Thursday, March 21 at 7:00pm, all are invited to join Archbishop Etienne and the priests of the Archdiocese of Seattle for the Chrism Mass. During this annual celebration, the holy oils which will be used in the administration of the sacraments at Easter and throughout the coming year—the Oil of Catechumens, the Oil of the Sick, and Sacred Chrism—are blessed and consecrated. In addition, the bishops and priests renew their priestly promises. All are welcome to join this beautiful liturgy as we prepare to enter into Holy Week.

INTERESTED IN BECOMING CATHOLIC? Are you, a family member, or a friend interested in joining the Catholic Church? Are you curious about how a person becomes Catholic or do you simply want to learn what Catholicism is all about? Information, John Marquez, jmarquez@stjames-cathedral.org, 206-654-4640.

ST VINCENT DE PAUL THANKS YOU An older couple living together for some years are devoted partners. While they both have disability issues, the partner in better health serves as caregiver to the other. When a health crisis resulted with a hospital stay for one of these partners, the healthier partner rented a room nearby the hospital for a few days enabling him to visit the hospital and advocate for his partner. The expense of renting the room made the couple short of rent money. These neighbors called the ST VINCENT DE PAUL Helpline (206-767-6449 or online .https://svdpseattle.org/get-help/online-help-request-form/). With the help of our partners at this parish, we paid a portion of the couple’s rent which gave them a clean start financially for the next month. Information, Jo Ann Wiesner, 206-291-4012 or wiesnerjo@gmail.com.

These schools provide in-parish tuition rates for registered St. James parishioners. We also support FOUR Catholic High Schools (Bishop Blanchet, Holy Names, Kennedy Catholic, and O’Dea) through the Simperman Scholar program. Don’t hesitate to contact Patty Pruitt at 206-274-3108 or ppruitt@stjames-cathedral.org for requirements and a 2024-2025 school year application. WELCOME BACK  Would you yourself – or someone you know – like to take another look at the Catholic Church? If, for one reason or another, you have been away and long for community, or feel hungry for something more, Welcome Back might be just the right place to safely express your concerns. A new in-person eight-week series will begin in April. Information, John Simpson, 206-654-4658 or jsimpson@stjames-cathedral.org.

CARE FOR CREATION NEWS The Washington State legislature passed one Care for Creation bill in this year’s session. HB 1368, the Clean School Buses Act, earmarks $40 million for public schools to purchase zero emission school buses. This will reduce pollution and the adverse health effects resulting from diesel buses.

TOILETRY DONATIONS If you are traveling and staying at a hotel, consider bringing the small toiletries back to St. James. There is a donation bin located in the Cathedral Bookstore. Our St. Vincent de Paul conference packages the toiletries and distributes them to those in need. Thank you!

TEAM EFFORT HELPS STUDENT OVERCOME CHALLENGES AND LEADS TO US CITIZENSHIP Student A and Tutor K were matched in early 2022 in the Immigrant Assistance tutoring program. A had a strong desire to become a U.S. citizen. She was not literate in her first language and her English proficiency was not at the level needed to pass the test for naturalization. Tutor K worked with A diligently and patiently, teaching her how to read and write the words on the citizenship vocabulary list, as well as helping her learn the 100 civics questions. Immigrant Assistance staff also worked hard to prepare A, providing extra practice sessions for the interview and test over multiple months. With everybody’s hard work, A passed her citizenship interview in December 2023 on the first try! A was so happy and grateful! Would you like to join our wonderful ESL & Citizenship tutor team? Information, Sayuko Setvik, ssetvik@stjames-cathedral.org or 206-382-4511.

Parish Pilgrimage to France and Italy, 2025

Enrollment deadline March 30!

Dear Friends,

I want to invite you to join me and the Cathedral community on a pilgrimage to France and Italy in March, 2025. In France, the highlight will be seeing the completely restored and renovated Notre-Dame de Paris, which has been under construction since the catastrophic fire in April, 2019. In Rome, 2025 is a Jubilee year, a special year of grace marked by the opening of the Holy Door.

Our journey will begin in Normandy, with Omaha Beach and the American Cemetery. After that we will have the opportunity to explore Lisieux, visiting the home of St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus, the Little Flower, and celebrating Mass at the amazing Basilica of St. Thérèse. From there, we’ll continue on to Bayeux and see the stunning Cathedral as well as the famous tapestry. Making our way to Paris, we will stop to visit Rouen and the church of St. Joan of Arc, as well as Giverny, where we will see Monet’s home and famous garden. In Paris, there will be plenty of time to explore, shop, and enjoy. Highlights will be Mass at the Basilica of the Sacré Coeur in Montmartre, and Sunday Mass at the newly restored Notre Dame de Paris. Before we depart Paris, we’ll share a fun dinner cruise on the Seine.

Our journey continues in Rome, where the Jubilee Year will be underway. We will attend the Holy Father’s general audience, celebrate Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica, and process through the Holy Door.

I know this all sounds like a whirlwind, but we have taken special care to build some extra free time into the itinerary--for a meal with friends, a visit to a site not on the itinerary, or just for some quiet time to walk, pray, or nap!

Best of all, we will be celebrating our faith, forming deeper bonds of friendship, and praying in some very holy places. You can download the complete itinerary and details here. Please consider joining us!
