Palos Park Police Department Safety Reminder

It is not uncommon in early Spring for a resident to be contacted by a “contractor” about footing, foundation, and concrete work.

Keep in mind most contractors are hardworking professionals, but there are bad apples who may try and scam you. PPPD was contacted recently by a resident after a questionable cold call from a contractor. After a cursory check, information obtained indicates that the company seems to be a legitimate business, however, their work product is harder to confirm. Nonetheless, our resident did the right thing in contacting PPPD.

Be alert when there is pressure to book the work fast, as that can be a red flag. Professionals understand that you’re most likely “contractor shopping” and getting estimates from several companies. A contractor who wants you to pay a deposit immediately or says they’re running a special for a limited time, is a major warning sign of a scam. In addition, the “Just in the area” and noticed needed repairs on your porch, driveway, etc., may also indicate a scam artist.

The “Leftover” materials is another warning sign of a potentially shady contractor who tries to sell you leftover materials from another project in the area. Proceed with caution and reach out to the police department at (708) 671-3770 if you need assistance.
