The 24th of May is the Queen’s birthday
If we don’t get a holiday we’ll all run away
“Children’s Chant”
In my long-ago childhood “FIRECRACKER DAY” ranked right up there with Christmas for excitement and expectations for us kids. We hung around the local grocery store where the fireworks were laid out on a long table. Oh, the wonder of it all!. Sky Rockets, Pinwheels that you nailed to a tree so it could e spin, LawnLights, Sparklers, Banger Firecrackers and the favourite of us all The Burning Schoolhouse.
At that time in history there were no organized displays in the local park. Each home in the neighborhood had its own private paper bagful of explosives brought home by Father from the local store. The families would gather on front porches waiting until the streetlights came on and the first sky rocket would whoosh by into the night sky. Half an hour later it was all over. We were marched off to bed with the unmistakable smell of gunpowder still in our nostrils, in the sure and certain knowledge that summer had begun.
HAPPY FIRECRACKER DAY
