THIRTY-FIVE YEARS IN PANAMA

Second-generation national missionaries in Calovebora, Panama, Joel Garcia and his wife, Dioselin

Approximately thirty-five years ago, Jorge Vasquez and Roderick Garcia were challenged while in Bible college to work on the northern coast jungle of Panama through medical clinics conducted by ORH. Both surrendered to pastor churches where clinics had been conducted and also to plant churches out of those churches.

American missionary, Jim Childress, through great effort and sacrifice, introduced and guided these young men to the effectiveness of medical clinic evangelism. Jim's efforts made it possible for ORH clinics to have presence and impact for evangelism and church planting with these young men.

Below is a video telling the effectiveness of ORH medical clinics in the country of Panama. Please take time to watch the video in its entirety. You will be blessed.

The early days on the northern coast were very difficult because of travel, food, water, lodging....

Panama was the first country where ORH conducted evangelistic clinics. The first clinic was in 1993 in a village called Arenosa. There is a church in that area to this day,

In 1995, ORH clinics were moved to the jungles of the northern coast in a village called Belen. There is a church there as a result. This clinic required our first use of helicopters and boats.

In 1999, ORH pushed further up the coast to Calovebora. Calovebora was more difficult to access. There were no roads and 122 nautical miles to travel on ocean from Colon in wooden boats. The helicopter became essential to add to the boats.

Storms on the northern coast were constant, and our teams were taught to

Packed, in the boat,

and ready to go!

waterproof everything because nothing would be dry after the ocean trips. These trips were very rugged, requiring stamina and determination.

In one incident while attempting to reach Chiriqui Grande, the team boats encountered a squall which made it impossible to see the coastline for navigation. When the team broke out of the squall about one hour later, Chiriqui Grande could be seen. All the team thanked God!

All clinics were held on the coast where rivers entered the ocean. These rivers emptying into the oceans were the only highways for thousands who attended the coastal clinics. To travel on the jungle floor took days to reach the clinic sites and were very dangerous.

Because of distance, difficulty, and time, ORH was forced to use helicopters for travel which was very expensive. The video is an example of the helicopter use.

In 2026, the second generation of clinic evangelists began by going back to Calovebora....

Although time changes, they often stay the same. The clinics still reach people with great physical needs. The same Gospel is still preached by eager preachers to those with great spiritual needs. The goal is still the same: establish Bible preaching churches for God's Glory.

Pastor Joel will follow-up those who received Christ in this latest clinic for the new Calovebora church. Below Joel and his wife stand on the new church property in Calovebora. ORH has supplied money for the land and has committed to send more money to help this young man build a church there.

Please continue to pray for the many churches on the northern coast of Panama as a result of 35 years of Operation Renewed Hope work.
