Local Groups Band Together To Get The Lead Out
|
Awareness of the health hazards caused by lead--especially lead-based paint--has grown in recent years. But the lack of properly trained and certified contractors and workers remains an issue. A partnership between Habitat for Humanity, the Sugar River Valley Regional Tech Center (SRVRTC) in Claremont, Sullivan County, Southwestern Community Services, and the Greater Sullivan County Public Health Network is hoping to change that. Last month a 4-day training class was held at the Sullivan County complex in Unity that trained 10 students in lead hazard abatement. Funding for the class was provided by the Department of Health and Human Services and supported by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the New Hampshire Housing Finance Authority. Receiving training were two instructors from the Tech Center, two people from Habitat for Humanity, local contractor Jon Nelson, of Concept Carpentry and five inmates from the Dept. of Corrections who participate in a work release program.

Volunteers Needed for Special Olympics Regional Meet
|
Claremont has been chosen as the host site for this year’s Special Olympics Regional Meet and we are looking for volunteers to help with this event. The day of the event will be Saturday, May 4
th
. Events will include swimming, bocce, and track and field. The events will take place at both the Claremont Community Center and Monadnock Park. Volunteers will be required to attend a training for their event at 8 AM and will need to be able to help with that event throughout the day. The closing ceremonies are scheduled to take place at approximately 2PM. Bar Harbor Bank & Trust Offers Scholarship for High School Senior
|
Bar Harbor Bank & Trust is pleased to announce the availability of a $1,500 scholarship for high school graduating seniors who are going on to college. The scholarship is for income eligible applicants who have attended a technical career program as part of their high school curriculum. There is the potential for 15 awards of $1,500 each. From qualified applicants, one student may be chosen per technical center in the geographic region outlined below. The deadline to apply is May 1, 2019. Applications are available at any branch of Bar Harbor Bank & Trust and can also be found online at

Students residing in the following counties are eligible:
Maine
– Hancock, Kennebec, Lincoln, Penobscot, Sagadahoc, Waldo, and Washington;
New Hampshire
– Grafton, Hillsborough, Merrimack and Sullivan;
Vermont
– Orange, Rutland, Washington and Windsor.
