A Message from Dr. Shetzer
Pershing Community!

We are just six days away from the end of the 2021-2022 school year. We made it! I am so proud of our students, faculty, staff, and parent community for all their hard work and support of Pershing Middle School.

As we move into the final few days, please remember that backpacks are not allowed. 8th graders going to Schlitterbahn on Friday may bring a backpack to hold their towels, sunscreen, extra clothes, etc.

We also want to remind all students that water guns, water balloons, silly string, etc. is prohibited and will be confiscated.

Summer school is June 13 - July 7. Final determination of who must attend summer school will be made once end of year grades have been calculated this Friday. Remember that students must pass three of the four core classes with a 70 average to promote. We cannot promote students who fail unless they attend summer school. We will also hold an attendance “buy-back” next Thursday, June 9, from 9-12. Students who have excessive unexcused absences (11-20) may make up their attendance by coming that day. Any student with more than 20 unexcused absences may have to attend summer school to promote. Final letters will be sent home on Tuesday, June 7, with the report cards.

Finally, don’t forget that we have several events coming up these last few days.

June 2 - 6th and 7th grade field trip to Main Event

June 3 - 8th grade field trip to Schlitterbahn

June 6 - 8th grade superlatives award show (students only) and picnic

June 7 - 8 grade promotion at Butler Stadium and last day of school

As always, thank you for being invested in your child’s future. We are Pershing Proud!

Steven Shetzer, Principal
President's Message
Hello Pershing Panda Families!

We are in the homestretch! This Friday the 8th grade will go to Schlitterbahn for an end of year celebration. Please remind your child NOT to bring anything valuable.

We are busily planning for next year. If you have an idea or would like to help, please email me at pershingpres@gmail.com. So many fun things are in the works for the 2022-2023 school year!

Have a great week!

June 2nd - 6th and 7th Grade Field Trio
June 3rd - 8th Grade Field Trip
June 7th - 8th Grade Promotion Ceremony
6th and 7th Grade Parents

The 8th Grade Promotion Ceremony is June 7th at Butler Field House. Pershing Staff and the 8th Grade PTO Team need help from 6th/7th grade parents to supervise the registration tables at the ceremony.
Our role is to take tickets as the parents enter the facility.
We greatly appreciate you volunteering your time to help.
They would like the volunteers to arrive at 8:45am and stay until approximately 10:30am-10:45am.
Even if you can't stay the entire time, we still welcome you to volunteer. This is the first ceremony since Covid as well as the ticket system. We could use all hands on deck and this is a great learning experience for our promotion ceremony next year. Rising 6th grade parents will be asked to do the same for us.

Thanks to a generous $20,000 Project Lead The Way (PLTW) Gateway grant from Chevron and Verizon, Pershing Middle School is expanding their Project Based Learning (PBL) program as part of the Houston Independent School District’s initiative to expand PLTW implementation across the district.

PLTW is a nonprofit organization that provides classroom tools and teacher training for a transformative hands-on learning experience for K-12 students across the U.S.  that builds confidence and grows interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). Independent studies have shown that PLTW students outperform their peers in school, are better prepared for post-secondary studies, and are more likely to consider careers as scientists, technology experts, engineers, mathematicians, healthcare providers, and researchers compared to students who have not experienced PLTW courses.
“We are honored to be selected by PLTW to receive this unique STEM education opportunity for our students. The grant not only benefits the students taking Project Based Learning (PBL) Science Enrichment classes, but will benefit our school community,” explains Renee Hawk, Pershing PBL STEAM (STEM + Art) Science Enrichment teacher and PLTW Coordinator. Students who walk through Project Based Learning (PBL) PLTW classroom doors will transfer the collaboration, problem solving, creative thinking and communication skills they gain through their interactions with classmates in other courses at Pershing and beyond.
This year’s initial grant installment has enabled Hawk to embed the PLTW Energy and the Environment curriculum into her PBL STEAM /Science Enrichment classrooms. Next year’s remainder of the grant disbursement will fund classroom supplies and professional development for PLTW Automation and Robotics and industry-competitive VAX robotics technology and interested students in grades 6-8 are invited to be a part of the launch of Pershing Robotics Club.

Thank you, Panda Partners!

The support Pershing received from the surrounding community has been incredible this year! These 18 Panda Partners donated general-purpose funds to help the PTO enrich our school’s academic, fine arts, and athletic programs. They also sponsored specific items such as appreciation breakfasts and lunches for teachers, the school musical, the first school dance in 3 years, auction items and prizes for our spaghetti supper and bingo fundraisers, and the tent in the courtyard last fall. Please thank them for their generosity to Pershing whenever you visit them!

Need Assistance?
Here are some frequently asked questions from parents who have been looking for assistance.

  1. Where can I find contact information for my child's teacher? Our website directory is an excellent place to find our faculty and staff email addresses.
  2. How can I monitor my child's grades? HISD Connect Parent Portal is the spot! Click here for information on setting up an HISD Connect Parent Portal account.
  3. I have a question, but I'm not sure who to reach out to for an answer. If you have a question, you can reach out to your child's Homeroom teacherCounselor, or Assistant Principal for assistance.
  4. I need to schedule a meeting with a teacher, what do I do? Please email the teacher(s) you wish to meet with and allow them 24 hours to respond. Teachers are provided with a planning period each day, so they will send you those times to schedule a meeting. You can also call the main office at 713-295-5240 and leave a message for the teacher.
  5. I feel disconnected now that my child is in middle school. How can I get involved? This is easy. Join the PTO and attend the regularly scheduled meetings. We also recommend you attend the sporting events, fine arts performances, and PTO events throughout the year.
