With great sadness, we share news of the passing of an important member of Ranney School, Mrs. Margaret Mahon.
Long-time Ranney faculty member and administrator Margaret Mahon succeeded Mr. Russell Ranney as Head of School. Mrs. Mahon joined the staff in 1966, serving in college guidance, as a primary school teacher and supervisor, and later as principal of the Lower School and assistant Headmaster. During her tenure, Ranney School achieved a number of “firsts,” including the establishment of the Ranney School Parents’ Association (RSPA). Many of the traditions Ranney students and faculty cherish to this day began under Mrs. Mahon’s leadership. The number and variety of extracurricular activities also grew and the school renewed its commitment to academic excellence by enhancing many of its academic, athletic, and arts programs.
After a long and successful tenure as Head of School, Mrs. Mahon retired in 1993, passing the torch of leadership, and guidance of its students, and many treasured traditions to Lawrence S. Sykoff, Ed.D. Even after her retirement, she remained involved with Ranney School, not only as a retired head but as a grandparent.
We are all indebted to Margaret Mahon for all that she did and all that she meant to Ranney School, and her legacy will forever be in our hearts and a part of our school. We will continue to celebrate her life and contributions to the school's history. Stay tuned for more information on our plans to honor Mrs. Mahon's legacy.
