Winter 2023 EOC (End of Course) Exams for Students That Took Class Virtually

Virtual School Students,

Nease will be offering all EOC's: Algebra 1, Geometry, Biology, US History, and the Florida Civics Literacy Exam (FCLE) in between December 4^th - December 12^th. Deadline to request Winter 2023 EOC testing is Monday, November 27, 2023.

If your child is taking the SAT tomorrow at Ponte Vedra HS, please read the info from PVHS.

Please be aware that the campus is hosting multiple activities that morning. Parking for the SAT will be limited on campus. The front staff parking lot is the ONLY dedicated parking lot for SAT test takers. ONLY SAT testers will be allowed in the front staff parking lot, and once that is full students will have to park at Davis Park and walk to campus (5-10 minute walk). You will be required to show your SAT test ticket to park in the front lot. Please plan to arrive on campus early to get a parking spot, or to give you time to walk from Davis Park. If you are able to drop off and pick up your child for testing, that would be helpful!

Please enter PVHS through the front of the school. Check-in for the SAT begins at 7:30am in the courtyard of PVHS, and testing begins at approximately 8am. Late testers will not be allowed into the testing session once testing has started. Please remember to bring your ID. No ID = NO testing, this is a College Board requirement! 

College Board Accommodations for SAT & AP Exams

Students with a disability may be eligible for testing accommodations through College Board for the PSAT, SAT and AP Exams. Your child’s IEP or 504 Plan does not guarantee approval of accommodations for these college entrance exams. The final decision is up to College Board.

To request accommodations for your student, the College Board’s “Consent Form for Accommodations Request” must be signed by both the student and parent and returned to school. Once the consent form is received, we will start the application process. For additional information about accommodations on the PSAT, SAT and AP, visit the College Board website, www.collegeboard.com/ssd, or call them at 212-713-8333.

If your child is currently taking a virtual course, they MUST have the course completed by January 4th for the course grade to be calculated into their semester GPA. The cumulative GPA after 1st semester of senior year determines final class rank and is used to issue graduation honor cords.

Nease High School Theatre will conclude its first semester with a production of A Christmas Carol, based on the Charles Dickens’ holiday classic. Micah Vosburg will play the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge who is haunted by three spirits on Christmas Eve. Joining Vosburg are Luke Porter as Bob Cratchit, Lily Downie as Mrs. Cratchit, Rome Curtiss as Jacob Marley/Old Joe, Ellie Mirgeaux as The Ghost of Christmas Past. Andrew Hajdini as The Ghost of Christmas Present, Parker Black as Nephew Fred, Marisa McNally as Belle, and Maya Kalush as Anna. The cast will also feature Kaylie Burnett, Jacob Santana, Annabelle Frederico, Carrie Hendricks, Jackson Fry, Abigail Moring, Hannah Smith, Robbyn Dykeman, Amanda Ferrand, Mackenzie Cole, Tristan Mirgeaux, Kedren Ellis, Isabella Keller, Faith Leatherman, Juliana Weldon, Mia Kasper, Sarah Roney, Ethan Nash, Ethan Murphy, Michelle DeMeritt, Kylie Nolan, Samantha Morgan, Slava Melnyk, Charlie Evans, Mia Garrett, Kallie Smith, Brooklyn Gorga, Franziska Kasten, Kaylee Ireland, and Decker Curtiss (as Tiny Tim).

Ava Everly will be designing scenic elements for the production, including an eight-foot puppet of The Ghost of Christmas Past. Everly will also operate the puppet with the help of Maggie Yan and Tu Ly Bui.

A Christmas Carol will be directed by Nease Theatre Director, Mr. Mark Robinson, with Olivia Hill serving as stage manager, Mia Kasper as assistant director, and senior Lily Downie as music director and assistant choreographer. Advait Nair, a freshman at NeaseIB has achieved the Candidate Master title from US Chess Federation. Candidate Master title is awarded after attaining a USCF rating of minimum 2000 and gaining 5 norms (performance rating of 2200 and above in 5 tournaments). Advait is the first student to achieve a Master title from St Johns County School District.

Advait started his chess journey at Jacksonville Chess Club at a young age, he has been connected to the chess club by acting as an assistant coach since 2019 and currently assisting as a Tournament Director. Advait also volunteers on a weekly basis to teach chess to younger kids at the Link at Nocatee.

Jaguars Director of Production & Broadcasting Speaks with Nease Sports Media Students

Dave Decandis, Director of Broadcasting and Production for the Jacksonville Jaguars, spent some of his time with our Communications Academy Sports Media students at Nease. A Nease and Bartram Trail alumni, Dave explained how he started learning the ins and outs of TV Production during his time in high school, then followed his interests to UCF, where he majored in broadcast journalism. Following an internship at a 24-hour news network in Orlando, Dave explained that after sending his resume and demo reel out to 70 news stations, he only got two calls for interviews and one job offer. He said that even though this business is tough, it’s worth it if you love it. He spent time as a sports anchor in Kansas and West Virginia. He then moved behind the camera as a sports producer in Jacksonville, working at a local new station which also happened to be the official television station of the Jaguars. When the NFL team decided to launch an in-house video production crew, Dave was hired as Director.  He shared that while the department started as a team of 2, there are now 20 people in his crew, which turns out a variety of long and short-form video projects for a variety of platforms. The students had the chance to watch some of his work and learn the stories behind the video clips. They also got to ask questions, and get some inside information as to what goes on behind the cameras on game days. Thank you, Dave, for spending your morning at Nease with our Academy students!

Stellar Academy of Engineering Teacher Featured in National Podcast

Our very own Engineering instructor, John Beale, was recently featured on Certiport’s “Certified” platform, via a podcast. Certiport is a national company which specializes in providing pathways to industry certifications for students. They also shine light on educators who innovate in the classroom and host educators at a national conference each summer. Last summer Mr. Beale was invited to present at the Certified conference, to explain his unique method for grouping students in his classes. This fall, he was asked to share his techniques with a wider audience via Certified podcast channel. He is interviewed regarding his “Archer Method” for grouping, and describes how he integrates long-term, project-based learning in his classes to give students a better feel for real-world engineering. We are so proud of Mr. Beale for the recognition and we are lucky to have him as one of our two Stellar Academy of Engineering instructors! Listen to the podcast here: Certified: Certiport Educator Podcast – Using Certification Projects to Link Abstract Skills to Practical Applications with John Beale (google.com)

Academy of Hospitality & Tourism Upperclassmen Travel with Flagler College to Universal Studios

Thanks to Nease’s partnership with the Hospitality Management Program at Flagler College, 30 of our Hospitality Juniors and Seniors got to enjoy an all-expense paid trip to Universal Studios on Thursday, November 2nd. The students joined a group of Flagler’s Hospitality Management students, and the whole group had the opportunity to learn from Universal Studios’ marketing executives. The students got to insight into the ins and outs of marketing and creating a top-notch guest experience. Following the presentation, the students got to enjoy their own guest experience, by spending the afternoon in the parks. Many thanks to our partner, Dr. David Rivera, with Flagler College, who made this amazing trip possible for our Academy students!

IB Seniors

All IB seniors received their college application “gold envelope.” There is at least a 2-week (14 working days) turnaround for the processing of the envelope. Please allow for this prior to submission.

Reminder: The FFAA (Bright Futures) Application is now open. The FAFSA is scheduled to open at some point in December. Click here for more information on changes to the FAFSA and the reason for the delay in release. Please be mindful, that you must complete these applications in order to be evaluated for postsecondary financial aid eligibility.

If a senior is currently taking a virtual course, they MUST have the course completed by January 4th for the course grade to be calculated into their first semester GPA. The cumulative GPA after 1st semester of senior year determines final class rank and is used to issue graduation honor cords.

IB Juniors

Juniors are working on selecting their extended essay topic for the upcoming mentor selection process. Ask them what they plan on writing on and what research they are interested in.

IB Sophomores

HOBY State Leadership Seminar Opportunity (Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership) is available. Please read and discuss the post on Schoology with your parents if you are interested in this opportunity. The cost is 250$ to attend. Only 2 applicants will be chosen for this leadership experience. Tentative Seminar Dates are June 6-9, 2024 at Florida State University; Tallahassee, FL. To participate students will need to write an essay, "Describing the most rewarding and challenging aspects of being a leader in your school and community," and submit to Mrs. Kennedy by Tuesday, October 31st.

Athletic Clearance

Prior to participating with a Nease High School athletic team, all students are required to complete the athletic clearance process.

Please keep in mind that the FHSAA requires all student athletes to view free NFHS video courses on concussions, heat illness, and sudden cardiac arrest (see instructions below). Signatures on the EL3 form indicate that your athlete has completed these three video courses. The FHSAA also requires that all student athletes have at least a 2.0 unweighted GPA to be eligible for participation.

Athletic Fee/Pay to Participate

The purpose of the Nease Athletic Fee is to help address the costs associated with operating a high school athletic department. Currently the St. Johns County School Board pays each coach’s coaching supplement, and all remaining costs are the responsibility of the athletic department and teams. The athletic fee helps cover the following expenses:

·        Indoor and Outdoor Athletic Facility maintenance

·        Sports Medicine

·        Security

·        Athletic Leadership Council activities

·        Student-Athlete Letters and Awards

·        FHSAA membership dues and other fees

We are so excited to announce that our three-day conference will be February 2nd-4th 2024! We are reaching out to invite your students in grades 9-12 to apply for our annual Young Leaders Conference. 

The Young Leaders Conference is a UF student-led event that guides students through a variety of workshops intended to enhance their leadership skills, while interacting with and experiencing the UF campus. Due to the large volume of registrants in the past few years we are transitioning to an application process. The Young Leaders Conference exists to educate and expand the minds of the leaders of tomorrow. In an effort to bring students who are truly passionate about developing their own leadership skills for the betterment of the world around them we are implementing an application.
