Office Hours: 8:30am to 4:45pm
From Mrs. Kunze
Happy Friday!

It is hard to believe that we finished week 5. We strongly encourage all parents to check your child's grades in HAC. If your child is struggling in a class, please reach out to the teacher. Also, talk to your child about using EXCEL time to seek help from a teacher and/or re-take a summative.

National Honor Society after school tutoring takes place next week every Tuesday and Thursday after school in the media center from 4-5 p.m. This is a FREE service for all our students. They do not need to make an appointment or reservation. Students just need to come straight to the media center after school, sign in, and our NHS Officers will match them up with a tutor. This is available to ALL our students – distance learners included! Our tutors can work with them virtually if they need help, however, they will need to contact Mrs. Milian directly to try to schedule a virtual tutor. If a student needs other times (ie: mornings, lunch, excel, other days, etc) students need to contact me directly so that I can schedule a tutor to meet with him/her. For situations like this, a few days notice is needed. If you have any questions, please reach out to me at carolyn.milian@stjohns.k12.fl.us

Policy Reminder
If your child does not feel well and needs to check out from school, please tell them to ask the teacher for a pass to the clinic. The clinic will contact the parent to make arrangements for dismissal. Students should not use their cell phone when in class to contact their parent to check out of school.

SCHOOL PICTURE DAYS COMING SOON! Underclass school pictures will be taken Thursday and Friday, October 8-9 during English classes. Students will receive order forms, or you can order online at Leonards.com. If you did not receive a photo order form and would like to prepay, go to leonards.com/photoprepay . You can register for an account and order your preferred package. The Nease account code is C525357.
If English is 7th period, please print the Oct 8th Gold Day form

All individuals wanting to gain access onto the Nease campus before school or during the school day to attend any meeting or event must be registered as a volunteer through the St. Johns County School District. https://www.stjohns.k12.fl.us/volunteer/

***************************VERY IMPORTANT PLEASE READ!**************************************************

The PSAT exam is an important upcoming assessment for high school students on Wednesday, October 14th. As a reminder, the PSAT is for ALL 10th grade students as well as 9th or 11th grade students who have registered and paid to take the exam.

Due to COVID-19, the number of students we can place in our large group spaces is significantly reduced. This makes it difficult to provide a learning space for students who are not participating in the PSAT. To ensure both student safety and the optimal testing environment, we will allow flexibility to students on this day. High school students who are not participating in the PSAT may complete assigned work from home or at school on this day.  Assigned work will be due on Thursday, October 15th.

Please also note that October 14 is our first day of the revised time for Wednesday dismissal. Students will be dismissed at 2:00 pm on Wednesdays from October 14 – December 18, 2020.

  • Does your child live in the same household with someone positive for COVID-19? If yes, your child must quarantine for 14 days from the last date of contact with the positive individual. A negative test result does not reduce the quarantine requirement for the full 14 day incubation period.
  • Has your child had close contact with someone who in the past 14 days who tested positive for COVID-19? If yes, your child must quarantine for 14 days from the last date of contact with the positive individual. A negative test result does not reduce the quarantine requirement for the full 14 day incubation period.

Distance Learners
Week of October 5th - We will continue to test on Thu & Fri from 4:30pm to 5:30pm in the cafeteria both days.
Week of October 12th - We will move testing to Wed (2:30pm to 4pm) & Thu from 4:30pm to 5:30pm in the cafeteria both days.
We are having too many conflicts with finding a space to test on Fridays.

The district has created a technology issue webpage to check for technology issues.

Students who are participating in the distrance learning option must...
  • Check Schoology updates for each course daily.
  • Participate in live conferences each period.
  • Have access to a computer with a working camera and microphone.
  • Have access to a printer.

Students: Download the weekly agenda, so if Schoology goes down you have the agenda for that period on your computer already.

Cameras need to be turned on when directed by the teacher to do so. Some students are logging in and since their camera is off are walking away from their computer. The teacher knows this when they ask the distance learner a question and there is no response. Students must participate in whatever is planned by the teacher that day. Teachers have been asked to email home for parent support and if the issue continues, the student will be referred to a dean.

If you or your student are having Schoology issues, please click on this link and bookmark it. This provides real-time data on any issues Schoology might be having. Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and click on “Schoology Status History” for updates.

October 6th: Counselors will be hosting a Virtual Financial Aid Parent Night. Parents and students should register in advance of the visit here: https://forms.gle/zNbJXmdDxwLpmaEY6. Parents and students are asked to submit their financial aid questions at the time of registration so that we can make sure that they are all covered through the event.
October 7th: Counselors will host a “Nuts and Bolts” of Financial Aid during excel in M107. Students will be able to get instructions to take home to complete the Bright Futures and FAFSA applications. We will help students set up their FAFSA pins and answer any follow up questions from the October 6th financial aid night.
October 15th: FAFSA Frenzy at St. Johns River State College. Families can personalized one on one helping completing their FAFSA from St. Johns River Financial Aid staff. Please see the FAFSA frenzy flier to a list of the documents that families need to bring in order to participate.

October 28th: FAFSA Day! Counselors will assist students with FAFSA questions during excel in M107.
Senior Individual Appointments:
Last week counselors started meeting with students individually. We are making sure that each student knows exactly what they have remaining for graduation and that they are properly enrolled in those courses. We are also discussing with each student what their plan for after high school is and make sure that they know what their next steps are to accomplish those goals. This process will take a few weeks. Distance learners and students without an English class should connect with their counselor to schedule a time.
Senior College Applications:
Students should continue working on their college applications if they have not already been submitted. There are several deadlines that are coming up between now and November 1st . If your test scores are not where you want them to be, now is the time to register for the next SAT and ACT. You can register for the SAT at www.collegeboard.org and the ACT at www.actstudent.org .

Media Center News
Carolyn Milian – School Librarian Media Specialist
Lorna Patterson – Media Clerk
Allie Haddix – Media Clerk

The media center IS NOW OPEN for student access. Students MUST wear a mask to be in the media center. This is to maintain the health and safety of our students and staff in the media center.
Any student not wearing a mask,or refusing to wear one will be asked to leave. Students are also able to come to the media center for their lunch session with the following restrictions:
1.   They MUST have a MC Lunch pass each day. We begin to hand them out at 8:45 a.m. and only allow 50 passes per lunch period each day until we run out. Once passes are all gone, no more students will be able to come to the Media center for lunch. Lunch passes are different colors every day and date stamped.
2.   Students who have a MC Lunch pass, MUST go to the cafeteria FIRST to buy their lunch then come to the media center.
3.   Students can only eat on the tile floor in the café section. As soon as they are done eating, they are being asked to move onto the media center floor to allow other students who still need to eat.
On EXCEL Wednesdays, students MUST come get a MC pass for Excel A or B or both. They will not be allowed to enter the media center during EXCEL days without a pass.

Our media center is quite a busy hub of student learning and gathering. Social distancing and mask wearing are definitely a MUST for anyone entering the media center. But we are also asking for some supply donations to help get us through the school year because we go through these items quickly. If you can donate any of the following items that we use daily in the media center, we would be MOST grateful:
·              Napkins
·              Paper towel rolls
·              Clorox/Lysol wipes
·              Kleenex
·              Plastic spoons/forks
·              Hand sanitizer

If I can offer my support and guidance in any way, shape, or form, please do not hesitate to reach out to me via email, or directly at 547-8367. Please check out my media center web page for additional information and resources that will help your student with this school year and beyond. Thank you for all your support of our school library media program!
