SCHOOL PICTURES -- Grades 9-11 will take school pictures on Thursday or Friday, Sept, 8-9 through their English classes. Students received photo forms this week, or you can pre-order at leonards.com. Students without an English class can come at any time after before school, between classes, or during lunch.

Any NHS student taking an AP course as a self-study, through FLVS, or through SJVS needs to visit the Nease High School website to register to have a test ordered. The deadline for registration is September 30th. Directions can be found by clicking on "Testing Information" and then "AP Testing". Students with questions can email Assistant Principal Holly Rapp at [email protected].

PSAT-NMSQT Exam

It is time to register your 9th or 11th grader for the PSAT-NMSQT. The FL Department of Education pays for every 10th grader to take the exam, so there is no need to register them, as a test will be ordered for every 10th grader. The PSAT is a practice SAT. The score report provides detailed information that can be used to prep for the SAT. We only recommend 9th graders enrolled in Geometry Honors or higher to take the exam in 9th grade. We encourage ALL 11th graders to take the exam, since scores are used for the National Merit Scholarship Program. The PSAT will be administered during the school day on Wednesday, October 12, 2022 and the cost is $22. Payment is due by Friday, September 9, 2022.

Register and pay for the 2021 PSAT.

For more information on the PSAT-NMSQT, please visit the PSAT-NMSQT TESTING INFORMATION website.

SAT-NCR (Non-College Reportable) Exam – 12th Grade ONLY

This test is for 12th grade students who have not met the FSA Grade 10 ELA and/or the Algebra 1 EOC graduation requirement. Students who participate in this SAT-NCR experience will be granted accommodations (i.e., extended time) in hopes that the extra time will give the student a better chance to acquire the necessary SAT English and Reading (EBRW) score of 480 to meet the FSA Grade 10 ELA graduation requirement and/or SAT Math score of 420 to meet the Algebra 1 EOC graduation requirement. However, because these accommodations are not officially approved by College Board, results earned during a non-college reportable SAT administration cannot be used for admissions or scholarship purposes.

The SAT-NCR will be offered at Nease on Wednesday, October 12, 2022 to 12th Graders ONLY. The cost of the SAT-NCR exam is $60.00. Payment can be made via this link in School Pay. Payment is due by Friday, September 9, 2022.

For more information on the SAT-NCR, please visit the In-School SAT-NCR October 12, 2022 – 12th Grade ONLY website.

Senior Dues

Every year senior dues are collected to pay for everything related to graduation – facility rental, security, flower, video board, sound, streaming, parking, diplomas, programs, etc. The fee is $65 and can be paid online now. Senior dues must already be paid for access to the GradBash deposit link. Seniors who pay their senior dues by October by Friday, October 14th will receive a senior t-shirt. https://www.schoolpay.com/pay/for/Class-of-2023-Senior-Class-Dues-/ScBfZbi

GradBash

GradBash is a special ticketed event for seniors at Universal Studios. Seniors cannot use an annual pass for access to this event or drive themselves. Seniors will depart Nease at 1:30pm on 4/28/23 and return at approximately 5am on 4/29/23. The GradBash Deposit link has been published in the Senior Schoology group and the Class of 2023 Remind. You can only make a deposit if you have already paid dues and there are spots remaining. At this time, there are very few spots remaining! The non-refundable deposit is $100, we estimate a second non-refundable payment in the spring of $85, and it is possible (based on fuel costs) that a 3rd payment may be necessary. Our hope is to keep the total cost at $185, which includes the special event ticket (access to Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure from 4pm to 2am), charter bus transportation, and a $20 voucher that can be used at park restaurants or shops. Once all spots have been sold, we will provide a waiting list link via the senior Schoology group and Remind.

All 250 GradBaah spots are reserved!  We have opened a waiting list, once it hits 50 we will add a 6th and final bus:  https://forms.office.com/r/iY61hj8VwS

Student Life

Clubs are up and running at Nease High School. Be sure to check out all that we offer on the school website by clicking on "Student Life" and then "Clubs". Sponsors are listed as well in case students are interested in knowing who to go to on campus to find out more information about joining a club of interest.

Nease is starting a competitive speech and debate team! Research shows the many benefits of debate participation, including positive impacts on college admissions. Your decision to join the team would be a win-win for you and the team. The NHS Speech and Debate Team is more than a club. An informational meeting is being held in Mrs. Brown’s room (P42) on Wednesday, September 7 at 8:45am for students interested in learning more about the team.

Mu Alpha Theta applications are now open for the 2022-2023 school year. Students that have completed Algebra 2, have a 4.0 weighted GPA in math classes, and a 3.5 overall weighted GPA are eligible to join! Click the link below to access the application. The deadline to apply is 4:00 PM on September 16th!

https://forms.office.com/r/E1Q90DJwdM

Email Ms. Baran, [email protected], or stop by A104 if you have any questions.

The deadline for applying for membership in Rho Kappa, the Social Studies Honor Society, is September 7. If interested, please see Mr. Lee in room P-52 for application information.

Marathon High is interested in YOU!

We will be holding our interest meeting on September 14 during Excel A in Ms. Fagan’s room (O-111).

Marathon High will train you to complete the Donna Half-Marathon in February. No previous running experience is required. The club also emphasizes distance over speed. However, students must maintain a minimum 14-minute pace.

The season will officially start in the beginning of October. We run three times a week, Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, and Saturday mornings. We will provide more details on this and the club itself at the meeting.

We look forward to seeing you all at the meeting and a great running season!

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY NEWS!

Advisers: Carolyn Milian, School Librarian Media Specialist & Ms. Morrison, English teacher

JUNIOR AND SENIOR PARENTS!

Invitation letters to our “NHS Informational Meeting” will be sent home next Thursday, Sept. 1st to all eligible juniors and seniors with a weighted GPA of 3.80 weighted and a minimum of 40 documented community service hours for juniors and 50 hours for seniors in eSchool. If your student does not receive an invitation and believes he/she meets the criteria, he will need to see me as soon as possible that Thursday or Friday.

Just as a reminder, below is the criteria to be invited to be considered to become a member of our chapter of National Honor Society:

Eligibility for National Honor Society:

  • NHS is open only to Juniors and Seniors
  • 3.80 SHARP WEIGHTED GPA (not rounded)
  • Juniors – minimum of 40 documented service hours IN eSCHOOL (HAC) documented by end of August at the start of your Junior year.
  • Seniors – minimum of 50 documented hours IN eSCHOOL (HAC) by the end of August at the start of your senior year.
  • Enrolled in at least 2 Honors, AP, or DE courses (or a combo of any of these) for the school year 2022-23.

·        Eligible Juniors and Seniors who have the required GPA and required service hours at the start of the school year, will receive an invitation for an “Informational Meeting” in September to discuss the requirements and expectations of all members in National Honor Society. At that point they will receive a “Selection/Resume” packet that must be completed and submitted by deadline date.

·        Eligibility does not guarantee admission. Other factors that will determine candidacy are leadership, school involvement in clubs, events, and activities, outside leadership and club involvement (ie: Scouts, church, community groups, work, etc.). The Faculty Council (8 anonymous faculty members) review all the resumes and make the final decisions regarding invitation to become a member or does not meet needed requirements. Juniors that did not meet requirements have the opportunity to become eligible at the start of Senior year. All confirmed candidates will be inducted into the club in a ceremony that will take place sometime in October. Confirmation letters will be sent out during the last week of September.

·        NOTE – students and parents – please understand that commitment to our chapter of National Honor Society requires a substantial dedication of time and service to our school, our students, and our community. Members WILL BE REQUIRED to complete 25 National Honor Society sponsored community service hours each year of membership to remain in good standing with the club and receive their white stole for graduation.  The philosophy and commitment of this chapter is to maintain a high level of service and commitment to our students, faculty, and community and this involves volunteering outside of school at community events and supporting our feeder elementary/middle schools. These expectations directly align to our chapter mission statement & purpose:

“The purpose of this chapter shall be to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character in students of Allen D. Nease High School.”

·        Parents can contact Mrs. Milian or Ms. Morrison for further information or check club webpage

THE MEDIA CENTER IS OFFICIALLY OPEN!

Students are able to come in and enjoy our space before school, during school (with a pass), during lunch, and after school. We have extended hours for our students to be able to utilize our space for studying, homework, tutoring, or just “chilling out”. Please check our media center website for information on extended hours and all the great resources we offer in our media center.

Media Center webpage

FREE AFTER SCHOOL TUTORING!

After school tutoring will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 13th in the media center. This is a FREE service offered by our juniors and seniors of National Honor Society. Students that need help or support in any of their classes can stay after school on any Tuesday and/or Thursday from 4-5 p.m. and work with an NHS member. No appointment or reservation is needed. Students can also request tutoring in the mornings or during lunches, however, an appointment for these times must be made with Mrs. Milian. And this year we will also be providing tutoring services during Excel times. So all our students have plenty of opportunities to get some extra help when they need it! For more info, please see me in the media center.

COFFEE STATION DONATIONS!

In our media center we have a coffee station set up with a Keurig for our students to help themselves to a cup of coffee, tea, or hot chocolate in the mornings, during lunch, and after school. With the start of the year, we have no supplies as of yet. If you are willing and able to help donate so we can keep this going for our students, these are some of the items we need:

·        K -cups (assorted)

·        10 oz. or smaller coffee cups (lots)

·        Creamer (individual packs or powdered. No refrigerated creamers please)

·        Individual sugar packets (no large containers)

Thank you so much for anything you can help out with so we can continue this little “perk” for our students.

ATTENTION ALL FAMILIES OF HISPANIC HERITAGE!! PLEASE READ!

We are going to have a CELEBRATION of Hispanic Heritage at Nease and we need your help!

National Hispanic Heritage Month begins Thursday, Sept. 15th and runs through Oct. 15th and recognizes and celebrates members of our communities and their ancestors who hail from Mexico, parts of the Caribbean, Central and South American and Spain. During the month we celebrate and recognize all the achievements and contributions of Hispanic American champions who have inspired others to achieve success. To celebrate our culture, our heritage, and our people, I will be hosting a “Hispanic Heritage Celebration” in our media center on Wednesday, Oct. 5th during Excel time. We would LOVE parent support and help! We are hoping to have a showcase of foods, music, dress, flags, decorations, and anything else you can help us with for the event. If you are able to help us out in some way, PLEASE email me as soon as possible so that I can count on you!! Thank you so much!! Que Viva Mi Gente!

SENIORS!! Get your “Panther Café Senior Tile”! This is your chance to IMMORTALIZE yourself in our library!

ALL seniors have the opportunity to take home one of our café area ceiling tiles, paint and personalize it, then have it placed back into our ceiling for a donation of $25. The money raised from this fundraiser will be used to purchase new computers for our media center and other technology enhancements and at the same time have our seniors immortalized in our café as these will never be repainted! Please contact me in the media center for more information.
