Happy Friday!

The district has received a grant for the UF vs Vanderbilt homecoming game on Saturday, Oct 7th, so the event is now FREE and we have 27 seats remaining. The charter bus will leave Nease at 12:30pm and return around 9:30pm. Students who would like to attend MUST complete a field trip form found in main office and have it returned by Wednesday, October 4th. The students who paid the $40 fee can pick-up their refund check in the main office.

Please remember for parent drop-off in the morning to move to the left lane after dropping off your child. If cars are meeting at the merge, please take a you go, I go approach so we can keep the car line flowing and get students to class on time. Thank you!

Please read the PSAT information below. We will NOT accept an online early dismissal for Oct 11th. Students need to pick-up the early release form from the main office or print from the link below.

PSAT Date is Wednesday, Oct 11th. Since the exam is digital this year, we initially planned for 9th graders to test on planning day, Monday, October 16th. Since registration has closed, we have determined that we have enough computers to test ALL of 10th and the 9th & 11th who registered on Wednesday, October 11th. To provide the best testing environment for students and to have enough teachers to administer the exams, students not testing have the option to take a digital learning day at home. All students will be given an assignment from their teacher that will be submitted. Students not taking the PSAT who choose to attend school, will sit in the cafeteria and use a laptop to complete online assignments.

If you would like your child to leave after testing at 12:45pm on October 11th, an early release form MUST be signed and submitted on Oct 11th for your child to leave campus. You can print the form or have your child pick up a form from the main office.

The St. Johns County Education Foundation d/b/a Investing in Kids (INK!) is once again hosting our annual Jail Break 5K – starting at the Old Jail in downtown St. Augustine and finishing at Vilano Beach. We’d love to have your students assist INK! with our Jail Break 5K on Saturday, October 21st AND earn service hours for their time. We will need groups for cheering runners and handing water to runners along the race course. All student volunteers will receive a letter documenting their volunteer hours.

Here is the sign-up link for volunteers: https://runsignup.com/Race/Volunteer/FL/SaintAugustine/EscapeFromStAugustine

You will see a list of cheer and water stations we need volunteers to sign-up for. If you click on the yellow volunteer button for a station, it will open a window to register for that station. If anyone has problems registering on the site, I can always add them manually. I just need a list of names that you want me to register. I’d love to have volunteers registered or your list of names by October 6th.

I do ask that volunteers register (in pairs, etc.) at different stations. We’d like to have a few volunteers at each station first, before filling up a single station.

Volunteers will need to check in at volunteer registration at 6:45 a.m. at The Old Jail, 167 San Marco Avenue, St. Augustine, FL 32084 (I know it is early, but they will be finished by 9:30/10:00). At 7:00 a.m., they will be shuttled from the Old Jail to their station location along the race course. A shuttle will return them to The Old Jail after the race for post-race festivities. Student volunteers in need of service hours will go home with a documentation letter at the end of their volunteer time on race day.

FRESHMEN/LINK CREW TAILGATE CELEBRATION!!

Friday, Oct. 6th is our home game against St. Augustine High and our Link Crew Leaders are planning a fun pre-game tailgate party behind Panther Hall from 5:30 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. Freshmen will need to complete the online form below, and donate $5 to cover the cost of food, snacks, and drinks. This does not include tickets to the game. Those must be purchased separately. Students can bring the money to Mrs. Milian in the media center. Please understand-students CANNOT remain on campus after school because there will be no supervision for them. They must go home and can return to campus after 5:15 p.m. and meet us under the pavilion next to C-pod. We’ll have corn-hole, ladder toss, and other

fun activities for them as they get hyped for the game. At approximately 6:45 p.m. the Link leaders will escort the freshmen attending the football game to the stadium. If you have any questions, please reach out to Mrs. Milian at carolyn.milian@stjohns.k12.fl.us

Freshmen/Link Crew Tailgate!

We will be holding our very first book club meeting of the year on Friday, Oct. 6th, from 4-5 p.m. in the media center. Our first book for this month will be The Mary Shelley Club by Goldy Moldavsky, which also happens to be one of the Florida Teen Reads for this year and a perfect read for October!

“Rachel Chavez is the victim of a home invasion that ends with a death. Since the incident, she has moved and changed schools, but is still haunted by that night. To cope, she has taken up watching horror films in the hope of overcoming her fears. Friendless at her new school, she discovers a secret group, The Mary Shelley Club: a strange group of teens fascinated by the dark and macabre. They meet to watch Horror Films and put together elaborate Fear Tests, to scare a chosen victim. Whoever scares their victim the most wins. But, what starts out as mean spirited, but physically harmless, pranks begins to become all too real. Will Rachel be able to discover who is escalating the Fear Tests to real violence before she becomes the next victim?

Mrs. Milian has approx. 10-13 copies available for book club members, but if your student would like to purchase their own copy to keep, here’s the link: https://a.co/d/3GS1ZYP

On Friday, we’ll start discussing the book, have snacks and a little Halloween craft for our members to work on in groups. Please remember that all club members must have a parent permission form on file with me before they can participate in the club. Please email me if you need a form. We look forward to a FRIGHTENING good time with our readers!!

Nease DECA is currently accepting donations of used shoes for our Helping Hands Shoe Drive. If you have any old shoes that still have a little life in them, please consider sending them in to us and we will take care of the rest!

PSAT PRACTICE!!

The Princeton Review is offering FREE webinars on practice for the PSAT in addition to other valuable information for your students. ALL sophomores will be taking the PSAT on Oct. 11th so this is a great opportunity to get them familiar with what the PSAT is about and some testing strategies. Please scan the QR code to learn more.

National Merit Semi-Finalists in the 2024 National Merit Scholarship Program

Over 1.3 million juniors in about 21,000 high schools entered the 2024 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2022 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. The number of Semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state's percentage of the national total of graduating seniors.

Congratulations to Nease's Semi-Finalists!

Although they will not continue in the 2024 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 students who entered the 2024 competition by taking the 2022 PSAT/NMSQT. Those being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success. These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation.

Below is a letter that I received from College Board. This is the first time in my tenure at Nease or in my 10 years as an AP in various high schools that we have ever received a perfect score on an AP test. Congratulations to junior, Braden Leonard!

Congratulations on Perfect AP Scores at Your School!

Dear Lisa Kunze,

I'm writing to share some exciting news about one of your students. Braden Leonard's performance on the AP® Computer Science Principles Exam in May 2023 was so superior that it falls into a rather select category.

As you know, Advanced Placement® Exams are scored on a scale of 1 to 5. Braden not only received the top score of 5, but was also one of only 459 students in the world to earn every point possible on the AP Computer Science Principles Exam, receiving the maximum score on each portion of the exam.

This outstanding accomplishment is likely a direct reflection of the top-quality education being offered at Allen D Nease High School. We applaud Braden's hard work and the AP teacher responsible for engaging students and enabling them to excel in a college-level course.

Sincerely,

Trevor Packer

Head of the Advanced Placement Program

Six students from our NHS speech & debate team participated this past weekend in our first Incubate Debate league tournament. All six moved on to tribunal rounds or semi finals. Three moved on to final rounds and placed in this competition: Rachel Ball (placed 2nd), Nihal Kondabrolu (placed 5th), and Roshan Chak (placed 8th).

The semi final and final topics were on Ukraine joining NATO, and the voting age being raised. It is incredible to see high school students discussing these topics at such a high level, and they received feedback from the judges (college professors) that praised them for this as well.

Outstanding job to all participants: Rachel Ball, Nihal Kondabrolu, Roshan Chak, Rishi Chandra, Pranav Devanand, Saicharan Ramineni.

It was a perfect morning for racing, and the Nease girls' cross team took advantage of the ideal conditions at the Bale n' Trail meet on Saturday, September 23. Emily Rackley led the Nease Junior-Senior team and ran a personal best of 22:25. In the Freshman-Sophomore race, Sophia Holmes ran a new PR of 24:29 and placed first among the Nease team. All eleven athletes competing at the Bale n' Trail meet established new personal records. The Nease cross country team will travel to Tallahassee on Friday, September 29 for the FSU Pre-State Invitational.

Academy of Hospitality & Tourism Seeks Professionals to Judge DECA Competitions

The DECA chapter at Nease has become a very successful Career and Technical Student Organization attached to our Academy of Hospitality and Tourism. To ensure all our student members are prepared and ready to put their best selves forward, Florida DECA has started a mock competition program this fall. They are currently looking for industry professionals interested in serving as judges in the virtual competitions. If this is something any of our parents would be interested in, you can follow the link below to register. The hospitality events are November 7th and 14th, but there are also other opportunities to judge events in marketing, business management, entrepreneurship, and finance: https://docs.google.com/forms/u/0/d/1jYU4vujQM6c_IlV7-77TpQcitJbL6yvfCzySJxVfOng/viewform?pli=1&usp=forms_home&ths=true&pli=1&edit_requested=true

If you have any questions, please reach out to Tara Amato at tara.amato@stjohns.k12.fl.us

Academy Guest Speaker Permission Forms

The Academies are scheduling upcoming guest speakers to share their professional experiences with students in the Academy classes, or during Excel time. This year, students MUST submit a parent permission form to take part in a guest speaker event. These permission forms will be sent home with students within their Academy classes, and need to be turned in with parent signatures before the guest speaker event takes place. Please be sure to sign these forms and remind your student to turn them back in to their teachers. If we have a guest speaker event during an Academy class, and your student has not turned in their permission form, we will have to send the student out of the classroom to complete an alternative assignment in order to be in compliance with new state rules. This is a new process, and it will impact all Academy programs.

If you have any questions about the Communications Academy, Stellar Academy of Engineering, or the Academy of Hospitality & Tourism, reach out to Mrs. Combs at jaime.combs@stjohns.k12.fl.us
