PSAT Date is Wednesday, Oct 11th. Since the exam is digital this year, we initially planned for 9th graders to test on planning day, Monday, October 16th. Since registration has closed, we have determined that we have enough computers to test ALL of 10th and the 9th & 11th who registered on Wednesday, October 11th. To provide the best testing environment for students and to have enough teachers to administer the exams, students not testing will have a digital learning day at home. All students will be given an assignment from their teacher that will be submitted. If students not taking the PSAT come to school, they will sit in the cafeteria and use a laptop to complete assignments.

If you would like your child to leave after testing at 12:45pm on October 11th, an early release form MUST be signed and submitted on Oct 11th for your child to leave campus. You can print the form or have your child pick up a form from the main office.

The Princeton Review is offering FREE webinars on practice for the PSAT in addition to other valuable information for your students. Grad Bash: Students who paid their senior dues by August 18^th will receive a link via email to buy a Grad Bash ticket on Wednesday, September 13^th. We have 300 tickets available for purchase on a first come, first serve basis. If the tickets do not sell out to those who paid by the deadline, we will release the link to all students who have paid their senior dues. The Genuine Genie and A Christmas Carol: Casts Announced

Nease Theatre is proud to announce the casts for two of its upcoming productions.

First up will be the district One-Act competition for International Thespian Society. We will be taking the play The Genuine Genie by Thomas Hischak to Tocoi Creek High School on November 17^th and 18^th.

On November 16^th at 7:00 PM we will do a public performance of this comedy that is a hilarious spin on the Ali Baba/Arabian Nights tales. Starring in the title role is Mackenzie Bradt, with Jacob Santana playing the earnest Ali Bob. Also in the cast are Rome Curtiss, Hannah Smith, Micah Vosburg, Sarah Roney, Amaya Mangus, and Kedren Ellis. The production will be directed by Mr. Robinson, with Ren Dunn stage managing. Technical aspects will be designed and handled by the Technical Theatre II class.

The semester will conclude with a production of A Christmas Carol, based on the Charles Dickens’ holiday classic. Micah Vosburg will play the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge who is haunted by three spirits on Christmas Eve. Joining Vosburg are Luke Porter as Bob Cratchit, Lily Downie as Mrs. Cratchit, Rome Curtiss as Jacob Marley, Ellie Mirgeaux as The Ghost of Christmas Past. Andrew Hajdini as The Ghost of Christmas Present, Parker Black as Nephew Fred, Marisa McNally as Belle, and Maya Kalush as Anna. The cast will also feature Kaylie Burnett, Jacob Santana, Nasir Robinson, Harmony Anderson , Annabelle Frederico, Carrie Hendricks, Jackson Fry, Abigail Moring, Robbyn Dykeman, Amanda Ferrand, Mackenzie Cole, Tristan Mirgeaux, Kedren Ellis, Isabella Keller, Faith Leatherman, Juliana Weldon, Mia Kasper, Sarah Roney, Christian Larson, Ethan Nash, Ethan Murphy, Michelle DeMeritt, Kylie Nolan, Samantha Morgan, Slava Melnyk, Charlie Evans, Mia Garrett, Kallie Smith, Hannah Smith, Gabriella Cook, Brooklyn Gorga, Franziska Kasten, Kaylee Ireland, and Decker Curtiss (as Tiny Tim).

Ava Everly will be designing scenic elements for the production, including an eight-foot puppet of The Ghost of Christmas Past. Everly will also operate the puppet with the help of Maggie Yan and Tu Ly Bui.

A Christmas Carol will be directed by Mr. Robinson, with Olivia Hill serving as stage manager and Mia Kasper as assistant director. The crew for A Christmas Carol will include Sophia Burger, Keira (Robin) Hickey, Caitlynn Hallman, Jackie Weir, Maggie Yan, Renn Dunn, Tu Ly Bui, Ava Everly, Aliza (Alex) Luz, Amelia Thompson, Dorian Huggins, Erika Mayerhofer, Gabrielle Watson, Gharam Amun, Joy Triplett, Kadyn Sakamoto, Kaylee Raisor, Kyra Ellis, Maddi Burnett, Renad Morsi, Ryan Grant, Scott Kuo, Simone Gursky, Tu Chi Bui, and Valentina Guglietta.

The Nease production of A Christmas Carol will be presented on December 7^th and 8^th at 6:30 PM, with a matinee performance on Saturday, December 9^th at 2:00 PM. Tickets will be on sale at a later date. Be sure to mark your calendars for this festive holiday classic

Nease teen first from NJROTC to attend Girls Nation

In July, Nease senior Hailey Pitches was selected for the American Legion Auxiliary’s Girls Nation, a first for school’s NJROTC program where she is the battalion commanding officer. Chief Warrant Officer Michael Donato said no other female cadet in the past 30 years of the program is known to have been given this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Girls Nation is open to any girl who is a high school junior, not just JROTC members. Annually, it gives select young women — two from each state — firsthand experience with the workings of the federal government.

The chance of being selected is very small, but no one who knows Hailey is likely to be surprised she was chosen. A natural leader with a pronounced can-do outlook, she has attained the NJROTC’s highest rank among 200 cadets.

But before traveling to Washington, D.C., to join 92 other young women, Hailey had to first be selected for Girls State. After an interview process, she joined 299 others in that program, which was held in June at Florida State University. There, participants learned about parliamentary procedure and the legislative process at the state level. They also held elections for their “city’s” mayor and their “state’s” governor.

Hailey ran unsuccessfully for mayor, but that turned out to be a good thing because it paved the way for even bigger success. She ran for party chair and won. Her new role running rallies and caucuses appealed to her, but there was something she liked even more.

Because she’d had leadership experience in the NJROTC, Hailey became a kind of mentor to many other girls and even helped her mayor.

“I think that’s what I loved the most about it,” she said. “That mentorship portion.”

When the participants were polled on who within their “city” was the most outstanding “Girls Stater,” Hailey received 29 out of 30 votes. The one she didn’t receive was her own; she’d voted for her mayor.

That poll turned out to be a contributing factor in the selection of two young women to represent Florida at Girls Nation. Following an interview process, Hailey was selected for that as well.

At Girls Nation, participants proposed and discussed legislation. They also ran elections for a “president” and “vice president.” Once again serving as party chair, Hailey ran conventions and worked diligently to ensure party members felt valued so that they wouldn’t be tempted to cross party lines during the election.

In the end, Hailey’s candidates won.

She said the experience helped her grow in confidence and recognize her own resiliency.

Hailey joined the NJROTC as a freshman, inspired by a friend who was a year ahead of her. But first, she had to convince her family that this was right for her.

“It’s a leadership-building program,” she said. “That’s what I saw it as.”

She won the support of her family and has worked hard to get to her current rank.

“I’m a big proponent of the NJROTC program,” she said. “There’s nothing like it. The travel, the experience, the opportunities you get through NJROTC is just unlike anything else in high school.”

And those opportunities are there for those willing to work for them.

“It doesn’t matter who you are,” Hailey said. “You are equal with every single freshman who comes in, and you can get leadership if you earn it.”

Hailey plans to attend one of the U.S. service academies after graduation, her top choice being the Air Force Academy. Ultimately, she hopes to be commissioned in the Space Force.

“I’d love to serve my country through the ‘Final Frontier,’” she said.

Athletic Clearance

Prior to participating with a Nease High School athletic team, all students are required to complete the athletic clearance process.

Please keep in mind that the FHSAA requires all student athletes to view free NFHS video courses on concussions, heat illness, and sudden cardiac arrest (see instructions below). Signatures on the EL3 form indicate that your athlete has completed these three video courses. The FHSAA also requires that all student athletes have at least a 2.0 unweighted GPA to be eligible for participation.

Athletic Fee/Pay to Participate

The purpose of the Nease Athletic Fee is to help address the costs associated with operating a high school athletic department. Currently the St. Johns County School Board pays each coach’s coaching supplement, and all remaining costs are the responsibility of the athletic department and teams. The athletic fee helps cover the following expenses:

·        Game officials

·        Indoor and Outdoor Athletic Facility maintenance

·        Sports Medicine

·        Security

·        Athletic Leadership Council activities

·        Student-Athlete Letters and Awards

·        FHSAA membership dues and other fees

The 2023-24 fee will be as follows: $75 Per Sport Played

PSAT/SAT Boot Camps are coming to NHS in September/beginning of October! There are two separate SAT Boot Camps and they each require a separate registration. All PSAT/SAT Boot Camps are held at NHS and are taught by NHS teachers. Spaces are limited!

Academy Students Should Check Out the Club Fair on Sept 13th

Academy students can get even more involved on Nease’s campus by joining clubs that speak to their interests. The Nease Club Fair will run during Excel Time on August 30^th, in the courtyard behind Panther Hall. Students will have the chance to learn about the different organizations and talk with club leadership. Some of the Career and Technical Education clubs that might be of interest to our Communications, Engineering, and/or Hospitality students include:

Transportation Technology Club -- encourages students to learn about and work on projects related to their interests in transportation including electric vehicle racing, automotive, rocketry, aviation and more   

VEX Robotics Competition Club -- gives students the opportunity to design, build, and program VEX Robots to compete with schools across Florida

Skills USA Chapter -- SkillsUSA competitions and conferences provide a national partnership of students, teachers and industry working together foster career-ready students

Computer Science Honor Society -- supports thriving environments for computer science students. CSHS encourages secondary students’ enthusiasm for computer science, honors academic excellence, and promotes service

CyberPatriot Competition Club -- offers students a series of online competition rounds where teams are given a set of virtual operating systems and are tasked with finding and fixing cybersecurity vulnerabilities while maintaining critical services. The top teams in the nation earn all-expenses-paid trips to Maryland for the National Finals Competition where they can earn national recognition and scholarship money

DECA -- a national organization that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management

Koding for Kids -- we teach all students basic coding skills to help younger students learn coding

Technology Student Association (TSA) -- enhances personal development, leadership, and career opportunities in science, technology, engineering and math as students apply and integrate these concepts through projects and competitions.

*National Technical Honor Society – acknowledges Nease High School Academy students who show leadership and outstanding student achievement. The application is open to Academy Juniors and Seniors with an overall, unweighted GPA of 3.0 or higher and a GPA of 3.5 or higher in their Academy classes. *Will not have a table at the Club Fair, students will learn more about this Honor Society in their Academy classes in September.



Northrop Grumman High School Involvement Program (HIP) Internship Opportunities Available

Northrop Grumman, a global aerospace, defense and security company with a location in St. Augustine, is offering their HIP program once again this year. The Northrop Grumman HIP program is a two-year internship available to Juniors in the Stellar Academy of Engineering. The competitive program only accepts four students from our Academy each year. The internship is open to Academy juniors with a minimum 3.0 unweighted GPA, who are currently enrolled in an Engineering Academy program, along with an interest in computer science, physics, chemistry, cybersecurity and/or robotics. Applicants must also be U.S. citizens. The application can be accessed here:

Mrs. Kennedy has visited all 11^th and 12^th grade TOK classrooms this week. Please ask your student for the information provided during their session. 

10^th grade visits occurred on August 24^th and 25^th. 9^th grade visits have been rescheduled for September 13^th. 

Seniors were given their gold envelopes to begin their college application process with Nease. Please see the contents of the envelope so you are aware of how to request transcripts, secure letters of recommendations and get secondary school reports completed by Mrs. Kennedy. More information is located in the guidance section of this Panther Press.

Lots of information is being posted on the Nease IB Schoology Page. All IB students have been placed in the group and provided the group code to join during the meetings mentioned above. Please ask your student what has been posted lately.

College visits have begun. Juniors and Seniors can sign up to attend through Naviance. There is a limit of 5 per year. See guidance section for those listings.

Our 1^st IB Social for students will be held on September 28^th during all three lunches. Be on the lookout for a sign-up genius to help with cold drinks and volunteer opportunities for parents.

Thank you to those that have joined our IB Booster Club.  They are a non-profit charitable organization run by a volunteer board of parents. All parents with students in the IB program are encouraged to join and participate in the IB Booster events. In our media center we have a coffee station set up with a Keurig for our students to help themselves to a cup of coffee, tea, or hot chocolate in the mornings, during lunch, and after school. With the start of the year, we have no supplies as of yet. If you are willing and able to help donate so we can keep this going for our students, these are some of the items we need:

Did you know that Hispanic and Latino Americans are the largest minority group in the US making up over 18% of our population? National Hispanic Heritage Month begins Thursday, Sept. 15^th and runs through Oct. 15^th and recognizes and celebrates members of our communities and their ancestors who hail from Mexico, parts of the Caribbean, Central and South American and Spain. During the month we celebrate and recognize all the achievements and contributions of Hispanic American champions who have inspired others to achieve success. To celebrate our culture, our heritage, and our people, we will be hosting this FUN event in our media center once again on Wednesday, Oct. 4^th during Excel time. We would LOVE parent support and help! We are hoping to have a showcase of hispanic foods, music, dress, flags, decorations, arts & crafts stations AND we will have TREMENDOUS Zumba instructor – Awilda Quezada – doing mini-Zumba sessions with our students! If you are able to help us out in some way, PLEASE email me as soon as possible so that I can count on you!! ALL students have the opportunity to take home one of our café area ceiling tiles, paint and personalize it, then have it placed back into our ceiling for a donation of $20. The money raised from this fundraiser will be used to purchase new computers for our media center and other technology enhancements and at the same time have our seniors immortalized in our café as these will never be repainted! We hope you're doing well! We wanted to send a friendly reminder that applications for the Florida Teen Safe Driving Coalition (FTSDC) Ambassador Board are now open! As valued members and friends of the FTSDC, we would greatly appreciate your support in spreading the word about this incredible opportunity for high school students across Florida.

The FTSDC Ambassador Board is a powerful leadership program that empowers student advocates to promote safe teen driving practices. As representatives of the FTSDC, these young leaders will be at the forefront of our coalition, engaging, educating, and mobilizing the community to develop and enhance teen safe driving programs and activities.

We kindly request your assistance in sharing this opportunity with your contacts, colleagues, and anyone who may know high school students passionate about promoting safe driving habits.
