Message from Mrs. Kunze & Announcements
I hope everyone had a safe and relaxing Spring Break. It is hard to believe that we only have 8 weeks of school remaining. Report cards were available before break on HAC. If you have questions about a grade, please contact your child's teacher.

Nease is still looking for parent volunteers to assist in the day-long Reality Fair for our senior Economics students. The fantastic event, held in the Media Center, gives seniors a look into the complexities of real-life budgeting and supporting a family in our economy. If you are willing to volunteer for the event on April 3rd, in the Media Center, please email Jaime.combs@stjohns.k12.fl.us

FSA and EOC exams are right around the corner and we need parent or grandparent volunteers to help us proctor. If you can assist, please use the link below to sign up. Thank you in advance for your support and dedication to our students!

We are planning for AP testing and need your help as testing proctors , so we can maintain a safe and secure testing environment and to help ensure everything runs smoothly for our students. Proctors are responsible for helping the test administrator by addressing student questions during directions, assisting with monitoring of no electronic devices, delivering needed pens/pencils before and during testing, and collecting materials at the conclusion of the exam. We are required to have a certain number of proctors based on the number of students testing, so we depend on parents and grandparents volunteering. A reminder email will be sent the week prior and the day before the exam you signed up to proctor. We ask that you please reply to the email, if you have to cancel for any reason. Thank you in advance for volunteering. We appreciate your support and dedication to our students!
Please click on the link below to sign up for one or more exams. (College Board rules state that you can not proctor an exam that your child is taking.)

NEASE’S GEOFF STEPHENS NAMED THE HIGH SCHOOL VIDEO COORDINATOR OF THE YEAR BY THE COLLEGIATE SPORTS VIDEO ASSOCIATION

The Collegiate Sports Video Association named Geoff Stephens, Video Coordinator for Nease High School , the 2017-2018 High School Video Coordinator of the Year.

Stephens was selected by a majority vote of his peers in the CSVA to receive the Coordinator of the Year honor. He is now a finalist for the prestigious Bob Matey National Video Coordinator of the Year award, which will be announced at the annual CSVA banquet on May 17 th , 2018 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The Bob Matey Award is presented to the Video Coordinator who displays innovation, determination, perseverance, and technical skill as portrayed by the late Bob Matey, legendary Video Coordinator from Texas A&M.

Stephens is in his 18th year as Video Coordinator with the Panthers. In addition to managing the filming and editing of practices and games he also coaches the kickers and punters. Under his guidance, eight players have received all-state honors and currently has one playing college.

If coordinating video and coaching weren’t enough, Stephens also teaches Television Production and Sports Media at NHS. In his classes, students learn the ins and outs of broadcast media while also covering every game of all 26 Panthers athletics teams and even graduation. Students learn how to shoot and edit footage for broadcast as well as produce highlights for each sport.

This is Stephens’ third time winning the High School Video Coordinator of the Year award. He previously received the award in 2013-2014 and again in 2015-2016. He has been a member of CSVA since 2009.

Stephens earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from Mississippi State while also kicking for the football team. In 1995 and 1996, he was named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll. He and his wife, Beth, have a daughter, Allyson.

Academy News
For the latest Nease Academy News, check out neaseacademies.com

If you are an Academy student, and want to drop your Academy for next year, you must fill out and turn in an Academy Drop form. Email Mrs. Combs at Jaime.combs@stjohns.k12.fl.us to request a form. We will not remove an Academy class from the student’s 2018-19 schedule until we’ve received the completed form, per district policy.

Upcoming Academy Field Trips/Guest Speakers:
  • England-Thims & Miller Lunch and Learn – Stellar Academy of Engineering (April 5th)
  • Hospitality & Tourism Panel Discussion Event – Academy of Hospitality & Tourism (4th pd, April 5th)

Students will be able to get field trip forms from their Academy teachers two weeks before the trips take place.

A reminder that Academy students sign a contract at the beginning of each year stating that they will maintain certain academic and behavioral standards in order to remain in an Academy program. Academy students must maintain a total GPA of at least a 2.0, and must maintain at least a 2.5 GPA (75%) in an Academy class. A student in an Academy must also maintain a good discipline record.
In accordance with district policy, if a student does not meet these requirements, he/she will be placed on probation for a semester. If, at the end of that probation period, he/she does not have a GPA which meets the requirements, or fails to have an improved discipline record, the student will be removed from the Academy. If an Out of Zone student is removed from an Academy, he/she will be transferred back to his/her zoned school. Letters were mailed home and delivered to students in class in early February, to make students and parents aware of probationary status for the remainder of the 2017-2018 school year.

If you have any questions or concerns about Nease’s Academy of Hospitality & Tourism, Communications Academy, or the Stellar Academy of Engineering, please contact Jaime Combs, Academy Coordinator, at Jaime.combs@stjohns.k12.fl.us

Great Decisions, brought to us by World Affairs Council Jacksonville http://www.worldaffairscounciljax.org, is a non-partisan high school enrichment program on foreign affairs that fosters critical-thinking, conversation and decision-making skills. College professors and high school teachers co-facilitate the monthly sessions at school, and encourage students to drive the conversation, ask questions and share opinions. Additionally, interactive program components off campus provide students the opportunity to apply their skills and knowledge in peer discussions. For content information see http://www.fpa.org/great_decisions

If interested, please join the Schoology group, “Great Decisions Nease” access code 5VTWW-9SNBQ. All events and opportunities will be announced through that Schoology group.

Please note that Great Decisions, The World Affairs Council of Jacksonville, and the Foreign Policy Association are not officially affiliated with Nease High School nor with the Saint Johns County School District. They offer these timely and relevant events to the community free of charge, and I believe they are valuable because they bear on the material taught in many of the courses here at Nease.
