Message from Mrs. Kunze & Announcements
We start administering the Florida Standards Assessment (FSA) and State End-of-Course exams this coming Monday. Remember that the score from the 9th grade FSA ELA is used for course placement and to determine if an intervention is needed in 10th grade. The 10th grade FSA ELA counts for graduation. Students must score a 3 or higher on the 10th grade FSA ELA to earn a high school diploma. Please ensure that your child is present on their assigned testing date, has a good night's sleep, and eats breakfast. Testing dates can be found below in the "Mark Your Calendar - Important Testing Dates" section.

Academy News
For the latest Nease Academy News, read the latest edition of the Academy Newsletter:

If you are an Academy student, and want to drop your Academy for next year, you must fill out and turn in an Academy Drop form. Email Mrs. Combs at [email protected] to request a form. We will not remove an Academy class from the student’s 2018-19 schedule until we’ve received the completed form, per district policy.

A reminder that Academy students sign a contract at the beginning of each year stating that they will maintain certain academic and behavioral standards in order to remain in an Academy program. Academy students must maintain a total GPA of at least a 2.0, and must maintain at least a 2.5 GPA (75%) in an Academy class. A student in an Academy must also maintain a good discipline record.
In accordance with district policy, if a student does not meet these requirements, he/she will be placed on probation for a semester. If, at the end of that probation period, he/she does not have a GPA which meets the requirements, or fails to have an improved discipline record, the student will be removed from the Academy. If an Out of Zone student is removed from an Academy, he/she will be transferred back to his/her zoned school. Letters were mailed home and delivered to students in class in early February, to make students and parents aware of probationary status for the remainder of the 2017-2018 school year.

If you have any questions or concerns about Nease’s Academy of Hospitality & Tourism, Communications Academy, or the Stellar Academy of Engineering, please contact Jaime Combs, Academy Coordinator, at [email protected]

In honor of April being Poetry Month, last Friday, April 6 th , we hosted our first ever poetry slam here at Nease. “ P 3 – Panthers, Poetry, and Prose ” was definitely a hit with our students, parents, and faculty members as 18 of our incredibly talented Panthers shared some of their most intimate, personal, and passionate words and thoughts to an audience of over 50 guests! We completely transformed our media center café area into a little coffeehouse and the atmosphere was perfect for our event. Oh my goodness! What an evening of beautiful and powerful sentiments that triggered many emotions and called for Kleenex to be passed around the room! Our 5 judges struggled to select a winner and asked that next year we have more opportunities for more winners.
CONGRATULATIONS to our 2 winners:
  • Lily McKenna who came in 2nd place and won a $25 Visa gift card
  • Bryce McClure and Mallory Pace who collaborated and came in 1st place and won a $50 Visa gift card

A tradition has been started at Nease and we will definitely continue this event in future years. So to all the poets out there, keep on writing and keep on sharing!

Prom is next week and several end of year events for Juniors and Seniors are being planned for the last few weeks. If any students are on the media debt list, they will not be able to purchase prom tickets until their debt is clear. I have sent out several system generated emails from our circulation system to students with outstanding media fines. If you have received any of these, please make sure your student takes care of these fines as soon as possible. And just as a reminder - Seniors will not be cleared to receive graduation tickets until ALL their debts/fines have been reconciled.

As we quickly speed into the 4 th quarter, I want to make sure students are all beginning to account for all their library books and textbooks. This weekend, I will send out a system generated email through our library circulation system identifying all the books students have checked out to them this year, as well as library books and/or fines. These titles will also include the barcode numbers that have been assigned to each book. Please be sure that these books are in your possession as these will be the ones that you are responsible for returning at the end of the school year. If you have any questions or concerns about textbooks, please contact me as soon as possible.
Have a great weekend and keep on reading!

Great Decisions, brought to us by World Affairs Council Jacksonville http://www.worldaffairscounciljax.org, is a non-partisan high school enrichment program on foreign affairs that fosters critical-thinking, conversation and decision-making skills. College professors and high school teachers co-facilitate the monthly sessions at school, and encourage students to drive the conversation, ask questions and share opinions. Additionally, interactive program components off campus provide students the opportunity to apply their skills and knowledge in peer discussions. For content information see http://www.fpa.org/great_decisions

If interested, please join the Schoology group, “Great Decisions Nease” access code 5VTWW-9SNBQ. All events and opportunities will be announced through that Schoology group.

Please note that Great Decisions, The World Affairs Council of Jacksonville, and the Foreign Policy Association are not officially affiliated with Nease High School nor with the Saint Johns County School District. They offer these timely and relevant events to the community free of charge, and I believe they are valuable because they bear on the material taught in many of the courses here at Nease.
