Message from Mrs. Kunze & Announcements
Happy St Patricks Day! I hope everyone is enjoying the beautiful weather!

Nease is looking for 10 parent volunteers to assist in the day-long Reality Fair for our senior Economics students. The fantastic event, held in the Media Center, gives seniors a look into the complexities of real-life budgeting and supporting a family in our economy. If you are willing to volunteer for the event on April 3rd, in the Media Center, please email Jaime.combs@stjohns.k12.fl.us

I really hate to announce another change in graduation rehearsal, but we were contacted by UNF this week and noon on Friday, May 18th will not work for them now. Our new graduation rehearsal time on Friday, May 18th is 10am . Please remember that graduation rehearsal is required for all participating.
Graduation has not changed and is Monday, May 21st at 7pm.

I forgot to mention last Friday that the stadium lights were fixed on Thursday, March 8th and are working properly. Thank you to everyone affected for your understanding and patience.

There will be a JUNIOR assembly on Tuesday, March 20th from noon to 1pm regarding Senior pictures. Please ask your child to see the handouts that they will be given.

Dating Violence Prevention Presentations are required for each grade level in high school. Freshman receive the information through HOPE, so only the freshmen in Pre-IB will be attending an assembly this Wednesday.
In 2017, the Florida Legislature approved an addition to statute that students in grades 7-12 annually receive information regarding healthy and unhealthy relationships.
On February 13, 2018, the School Board of St. Johns County designated February as Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month in St. Johns County and supports the work of the Betty Griffin House and its community efforts to empower teens to develop healthier relationships.
The statistics listed below show the relevance of this topic to our students:
-1 in 3 adolescent girls in the United States is a victim of physical, emotional or verbal abuse from a dating partner, a figure that far exceeds victimization rates for other types of violence affecting youth.
-High school students who experience physical violence in a dating relationship are more likely to use drugs and alcohol, are at greater risk of suicide and are much more likely to carry patterns of abuse into future relationships.
-Only 33% of teens who are in an abusive relationship ever tell anyone about the abuse, and 81% of parents surveyed either believe teen dating violence is not an issue or admit they do not know if it is one.
By providing young people with education about healthy relationships and relationship skills and by changing attitudes that support violence, we recognize that dating violence can be prevented. Everyone has the right to a safe and healthy relationship and to be free from abuse. On Wednesday, March 21, 2018 Jeff Gatlin from the Betty Griffin House will be providing information to your students in an age-appropriate manner. If you have any questions, please contact your child's guidance counselor.
The assembly secheudle is...
1st period - 10th graders last names A-M
2nd period - 11th graders last names A-M
3rd period - 12th graders last names A-M
4th period - 12th graders last names N-Z and Pre-IB freshman
5th period - 11th graders last names N-Z
6th period - 10th graders last names N-Z

For the latest Nease Academy News, check out neaseacademies.com

If you are an Academy student, and want to drop your Academy for next year, you must fill out and turn in an Academy Drop form. Email Mrs. Combs at Jaime.combs@stjohns.k12.fl.us to request a form. We will not remove an Academy class from the student’s 2018-19 schedule until we’ve received the completed form, per district policy.

Upcoming Academy Field Trips:
  • St. Augustine Amphitheater – Academy of Hospitality & Tourism (March 19th)
  • England-Thims & Miller Lunch and Learn – Stellar Academy of Engineering (April 5th)
Students will be able to get field trip forms from their Academy teachers two weeks before the trips take place.

A reminder that Academy students sign a contract at the beginning of each year stating that they will maintain certain academic and behavioral standards in order to remain in an Academy program. Academy students must maintain a total GPA of at least a 2.0, and must maintain at least a 2.5 GPA (75%) in an Academy class. A student in an Academy must also maintain a good discipline record.
In accordance with district policy, if a student does not meet these requirements, he/she will be placed on probation for a semester. If, at the end of that probation period, he/she does not have a GPA which meets the requirements, or fails to have an improved discipline record, the student will be removed from the Academy. If an Out of Zone student is removed from an Academy, he/she will be transferred back to his/her zoned school. Letters were mailed home and delivered to students in class in early February, to make students and parents aware of probationary status for the remainder of the 2017-2018 school year.

If you have any questions or concerns about Nease’s Academy of Hospitality & Tourism, Communications Academy, or the Stellar Academy of Engineering, please contact Jaime Combs, Academy Coordinator, at Jaime.combs@stjohns.k12.fl.us

Prom season is upon us as are several end of year events for Juniors and Seniors. If any students are on the media debt list, they will not be able to purchase prom tickets until their debt is clear. I have sent out several system generated emails from our circulation system to students with outstanding media fines. If you have received any of these, please make sure your student takes care of these fines as soon as possible. And just as a reminder, Seniors will not be cleared to receive graduation tickets until ALL their debts/fines have been reconciled.

As we quickly speed into the 4th quarter, I want to make sure students are all beginning to account for all their library books and textbooks. In the next few weeks I will send out a system generated email through our library circulation system identifying all the books students have checked out to them this year. These titles will also include the barcode numbers that have been assigned to each book. Please be sure that these books are in your possession as these will be the ones that you are responsible for returning at the end of the school year. If you have any questions or concerns about textbooks, please contact me as soon as possible.

Have a great weekend and keep on reading!

Many of our NHS students will be participating in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life at Bartram on April 14th. As one of our “on-campus” fundraisers, we are hosting our very own “Walk-n-Talk” event on Thursday, March 22nd and Thursday, April 12th during Excel time. For a minimum donation of $5, all students are invited to come out to the football stadium on those days during Excel time and walk around the track and talk and “hang out” with their friends while Mrs. Milian spins some tunes and MC’s from the sound booth! After the students are done, they will be able to go to the cafeteria and pick up an ice cream treat of their choice! This is all done in an effort to raise money for Relay for Life! Students who donate and register to participate will receive a blue wristband the day of the event indicating that they are able to be out there. All donations should be brought to Mrs. Milian in the media center between now and then.
Parents – we could REALLY use some volunteers to help our members prepare for the Relay for Life and to be at the Relay on April 14th. Please contact Mrs. Milian as soon as possible if you are able to help us out. carolyn.milian@stjohns.k12.fl.us

Please make sure that you are attending meetings regularly, completing your tutoring hours that are required in addition to the “in-club” and “out-of-club” service hours requirements to be considered as a member in “good standing”. Any seniors not in good standing by graduation day will not be able to wear the NHS stole over their gown. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Mrs. Milian.

Great Decisions, brought to us by World Affairs Council Jacksonville http://www.worldaffairscounciljax.org, is a non-partisan high school enrichment program on foreign affairs that fosters critical-thinking, conversation and decision-making skills. College professors and high school teachers co-facilitate the monthly sessions at school, and encourage students to drive the conversation, ask questions and share opinions. Additionally, interactive program components off campus provide students the opportunity to apply their skills and knowledge in peer discussions. For content information see http://www.fpa.org/great_decisions

If interested, please join the Schoology group, “Great Decisions Nease” access code 5VTWW-9SNBQ. All events and opportunities will be announced through that Schoology group.

Please note that Great Decisions, The World Affairs Council of Jacksonville, and the Foreign Policy Association are not officially affiliated with Nease High School nor with the Saint Johns County School District. They offer these timely and relevant events to the community free of charge, and I believe they are valuable because they bear on the material taught in many of the courses here at Nease.
