Welcome to the thirty-second edition of
Panther Press,
a biweekly electronic newsletter sent to families and friends of
San Joaquin Memorial High School
On March 15th, we will welcome students back to our campus who wish to resume in-person instruction for the first time since last March, combining our hybrid sections. It's been an unusual year, but Memorial is as dedicated to success and excellence as ever. This issue, we look at important updates, student success, and more.
Reminder: New Schedule on March 15, Return to Campus

Beginning Monday, March 15th we will be revising our Hybrid schedule. The schedule will allow students on campus 4 days per week. In effect we will have students A-Z on campus, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. We will continue to keep Wednesday as a white day, all Zoom day. This will allow us to continue with our deep sanitizing efforts as safety is our priority during this transition. Students who wish to continue to remain 100% remote may continue with that option.

The search committee has been formed and it includes: Susan Byers, Michael Thomason, Sissy Dalena Wood, Jeanette Suter, Michael Danks-Ferguson and Michael Burke.

The committee will meet next week to review the applications that have been received thus far and will meet on March 16th to review the total pool of candidates. Zoom interviews of the selected candidates will begin as soon as possible after the deadline of March 15th.
SJM Gets Vaccinated
This week, San Joaquin Memorial High School took one big step toward normalcy, with the majority of faculty and staff getting their first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine following the state’s announcement that teachers and school staff are now eligible.

"I am really excited that Dizon Urgent Care made arrangements to offer vaccines to our entire faculty and staff,” said Michael Burke, Head of School. “Our employees jumped at the opportunity to get the Moderna vaccine. 77% of our faculty and staff now have at least the first shot and before the end of March we will be fully vaccinated.”

Dizon Medicine Urgent Care+ vaccinated staff and faculty throughout the day earlier this week. The vaccinations mark the beginning of the opening of campus to more students. On March 15, the school will reopen to any student who wishes to attend in person. With safety measures in place, the future looks bright.

AP Capstone Program: Innovative Program Unique Opportunity for Students
by Edward Borges, AP Capstone Instructor

This is the third year that Memorial is involved with the College Board’s AP Capstone program and there are 49 students participating in this innovative and unique AP program this year. Originally in the 2018-2019 school year, Memorial was only 1 of 4 high schools in the entire Central Valley from Sacramento to Bakersfield to offer this program to its students.

The AP Capstone program involves two courses in this sequence: AP Seminar and AP Research--typically 10th and 11th graders take AP Seminar followed by AP Research.
What is entirely unique about this program is that there is no set curriculum. In both courses, students investigate a variety of topics from various academic fields, conduct research, write academic papers, and then present their results. In AP Seminar, students investigate real-world topics of their own choosing within a larger theme, conduct research, develop arguments, and present them. In AP Research, each student selects a topic of inquiry of his/her own choosing, develops and conducts original research, writes one academic paper, and presents his/her findings. Past students have lauded the program.

Class of 2020 graduate Chloe Paraguya summed it up best when she
stated the following:
“My overall experience [Seminar and Research] probably prepared me the most for college undergraduate and graduate years because we worked entirely at our own pace and own motivation. …it developed a sense of responsibility for myself in the future when I have to do my own studies in college. This program is something all high school students should experience in order to prepare themselves for college.”

Fellow classmate Maya Safadi added, “I think it has truly prepared me for my college and career paths. I am pursuing the honors program at [Santa Clara University] which requires seminar style classes and a senior thesis, and I believe Capstone has been great practice and preparation for that.”

Finally Isaac Gonzalez stated, “My overall experience in AP Capstone was phenomenal. These courses are going to prepare me for college. I am so thankful that my school decided to include the program in our list of courses.”

Last year the College Board awarded 6 seniors—Michael Askins, Isabella Garcia, Chloe Paraguya, Bella Ray, Maya Safadi, and Margaret Smith--the AP Capstone Diploma and 3 seniors with an AP Capstone Certificate—Chloe Bennett, Nina Civiello, and Isaac Gonzalez. The graduates were the first group to complete the AP Capstone Program. The College Board awards the AP Capstone Diploma to students who pass both Seminar and Research and earned passing scores for 4 other AP courses. AP Certificates are awarded to students who earn passing scores for both Seminar and Research.

Parents and students should seriously think about enrolling in the AP Capstone program next year. For more information contact either Mr. Olivares, Ms. Holden, or Mr. Borges or attend a AP/Dual Enrollment Information Session via Zoom this Wednesday, March 10, from 6:00-7:30 pm.

"This has been my childhood dream," said Cox. "This is something that no one will ever really understand how much I wanted and how much I worked for it, and I am so thankful for my friends and family who helped me get here. After Memorial, I plan to become an officer in the Marine Corps and serve something greater than myself."
