During the week of March 22-26, 20221, SJM will celebrate the traditional welcoming of freshmen. The purpose of this event is to introduce the freshmen into the SJM community and fill them with the spirit that we share. This is a great opportunity for freshmen to talk to seniors about classes, teachers, activities, etc. Freshmen are not required but are strongly encouraged to participate. This is a voluntary activity and freshmen are paired randomly with seniors (students must participate in order to receive the t-shirt and lunch at no cost).

This year’s theme is “Welcome to the Herd”. Seniors will guide freshmen through the following activities:
Friday, 3/19/21: Meet Your Senior
During Second Break - Freshmen can meet their Seniors to exchange information.

Students Raise $1,600 For Bus Stop Renovations
Inspiration struck Memorial Junior Ashley Belleza thanks to an internship she was part of at Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory in Fresno. Belleza realized she wanted to lead a fundraiser to help improve some aspect of the Memorial experience for her fellow students, but wasn't sure what to focus on. Finally, she settled on one aspect of Memorial after chatting with friends and classmates: the Memorial bus stop on Floradora Street.

"A lot of my friends use the bus stop and we figured that was something we could help improve," said Belleza. "We just saw changes that could be made."

Belleza approached Clarissa Myers, Director of Campus Ministry, about leading a fundraiser.

The fundraiser included selling Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory chocolate and chocolate covered apples and raised $1,600.

According to Myers, the bus stop will receive a new bench along with a covering. The goal is to have the project completed in May, if not sooner.

Belleza said she learned a lot from the experience.

"I learned that there’s a lot of teamwork involved in stuff like this," she said. "I was able to depend on my friends and fellow students for help throughout this all."
SJM Junior Emilio Carvalho to Compete for Spot on 2021 USA Shooting Junior World's Team

SJM Junior Emilio Carvalho has continued developing as a world class shooting champion. The Junior recently attended a preliminary training opportunity with USA Shooting in Kerrville, Texas. Emilio was in both the Men’s Finals and the Junior Men’s Finals. Emilio came home with the Bronze Medal in Open Mens and the Silver medal in Junior Men’s. He will return to Kerrville over spring break to compete for a spot on the 2021 USA Shooting Junior World's Team, which will travel to Peru and Kazakhstan during Fall of 2021 for the Junior World Cup and the Junior World Championship.

Congratulations Emilio!
Art Students Complete Coil Pots
Some great work from our first year 3D Art students! Students completed these coil pots, many through remote learning as part of a class project.

"Students had to access coiled clay in kits sent home, and create a 6" or higher pot completely remotely," said art instructor Joanie Hathaway. "I zoomed demonstrations, they took copious notes, and then I monitored their progress daily while they tipped the iPads on their projects in process on zoom. The emphasis of the assignment was on pattern, balance, and craftsmanship. They then were carefully brought back to school, and the pots were fired. They then had to select an analogous color scheme in glazes. They came back to school, carefully wrapped their pots in bubble wrap, pick up their glazing kits, and spent 2 weeks at home carefully and skillfully glazing their pots. Once returned to me, I did the final firing. These are amazing! Students were faithful to work carefully, skillfully, and creatively."
