Happy New Year from the PTSA!

We have reached the midpoint of the 2018/2019 school year! Thank you for your support of the programs and events we have hosted, sponsored and staffed throughout the first half of the year. Stay tuned for more: 6th and 7th grade dances; the "Out Of This World!" parent-son dance (link: https://conta.cc/2FJR1PV); the spring book fair; the art show, plus various parent ed events.

We are starting to plan for the 2019/2020 school year, and are looking to recruit new PTSA board members and committee chairs. We are seeking a parent or guardian for the role of Treasurer, a vital role that involves roughly 4-5 hours per month and more during the PTSA fundraising period August-October.  The role also requires a knowledge of (or an interest to learn) Quickbooks. Get on board now, learn the ropes, and ease into the role in the new year.

More information on this and other vacant roles will follow over the coming months.  Feel free to reach out to PTSA President Jen Moore if you are interested in being involved.

Stay tuned for more: 6th and 7th grade dances; the  "Out Of This World!" parent-son dance ; the spring book fair; the art show, plus various parent ed events.

Well, Coast Guard families are not being paid under the Federal Government shutdown, and it's time for mariners, beachgoers and local community members to step up and give back! MVMS Parent Ed
Anxiety and How It Affects Teens: with Dr. Tracy Foose
2/6 7pm - 8pm, MVMS

Why do traits like intelligence and drive seem to increase vulnerability to anxiety? How might our modern, connected world be exacerbating our anxiety? How can we teach our children not to fear their fear, but to harness anxiety as a motivating and protective force? Join Bay Area Anxiety Specialist Dr. Tracy Foose for an informative discussion on how to help our kids maintain balance and well-being during their middle school years and beyond.

Author Talk: David and Nic Sheff, High: Everything You Want to Know About Drugs, Alcohol, and Addiction
January 29 at 7:00pm @ Book Passage, Corte Madera

David and Nic and Mill Valley's substance abuse specialist, Dr. Micheal Genovese will talk about drugs, alcohol, and addiction. The three will share testimonials from peers and families who have lived through addiction, along with the cold, hard facts about what drugs and alcohol do to our bodies.  From how to navigate peer pressure to outlets for stress to the potential consequences for experimenting, the discussion will lay out the facts so that middle grade and high school students can educate themselves. Get a seat early to this one.
David Sheff is the author of several books, including the #1 New York Times bestselling memoir Beautiful Boy.

Suicide Prevention Program

In 2016, Assembly Bill 2246  was passed into California law, mandating that all public middle and high schools adopt and implement a policy on pupil suicide prevention, intervention and postvention.  Here in Marin County, the Department of Health and Human Services, Kaiser Permanente, and the Marin County Offices of Education have partnered together to formulate a Crisis Response Plan for suicide prevention and postvention, designed to support each school district in this endeavor.  It is in accordance with this state mandate and with the support of the county led guidance that we want to introduce our first school wide suicide prevention training, to our parent community.  MVSD adopted a Suicide Prevention Policy and Administrative Regulations in June 2017.  Click on the link below to view Board adopted Administrative Regulations: http://www.gamutonline.net/district/millvalley/displayPolicy/1086185/
MVMS has selected the SOS (Signs of Suicide Prevention) Program to do this work with both staff and students.   On February 6th, the student prevention training will occur in Panther Time classes which will be held at the beginning of the school day (instead of the end).
Suicide is the second leading cause of death among adolescents aged 11-18. More than 90% of people who die by suicide have a diagnosable mental health disorder, most likely depression, which is treatable. However, many youth do not receive treatment. The SOS Program encourages students to seek help for themselves or a friend so that a trusted adult can get them the support they need.
Parents have access to the parent portal, video the students will view on February 6, and other information that will be shared with them.  If you are interested in exploring this, please go to the following link and use the username and password provided below.

Carolyn Vaughan, school psychologist, and Anna Lazzerini also plan to host a parent evening if you prefer to view the video with us and to answer any questions you may have. The SOS parent evening will be held on January 30, in the MVMS library, from  6:30 - 7:30 PM.
